Installation Manual TWM Performance Short throw shifter 2001 and up Hyundai Accent 1. Place the vehicle on a flat surface with blocks in front and behind the wheels preventing unwanted movement. The car will be in neutral with the handbrake off for some of the installation so it is important that the vehicle be stable. Unscrew the shift knob by rotating counter clockwise; set it aside for reinstallation later. 2. Remove the Philips head screws from the front of the console on both the passenger s and driver s side. 3. Remove the Philips head screws from the rear of the console on both the passenger and driver s side. 4. Pull the handbrake up. Lift the rear half of the console, then pull the entire console upward to unclip the clips at the front of the console. Remove the rear half of the console from the vehicle and place in a safe location for re-installation. 5. Remove the Philips head screws securing the rear portion of the front half of the console.

6. Lift up on the rear portion of the front half of the console to remove it from the vehicle and place in a safe location for re-installation. This may be easier with the handbrake down. 7. Note: Wear safety glasses and use caution during this step. Insert a flat head screwdriver behind the clip on the right front side of the assembly and pry the clip off. The clip may be broken in the process but a new one is included with the TWM shifter. A hammer may be used to insert the flat head screw driver behind the clip as it is quite rigid. Alternatively, a dremel tool with a cutting disc may be used to cut the clip off. 8. Use a hammer to lightly tap the pin out of the assembly. Place the pin in a safe place for reinstallation. 9. Use needle nose pliers to remove the clip securing the side shift cable to the L shaped arm on the driver s side of the assembly. Remove the arm and spring from the assembly while taking note of the orientation of the spring for re-installation. If possible, keep the spring and L shaped arm together to simplify re-installation and put it in a safe place. 10. Use an appropriately sized punch or screwdriver and hammer to lightly tap the spring pin from the rear of the assembly. Use caution not to damage the spring pin as it is required for installation of the TWM short shifter. Now you can remove the top plastic cap from the assembly, as well as the plastic bushing and o-ring from the top of the stock shifter pivot ball. 11. Remove the 4 bolts which secure the shift assembly to the chassis with a ratchet and 12mm socket and set aside for re-use.

12. Once the 4 bolts securing the assembly to the chassis are removed, remove the 4 rubber bushings in the base of the assembly. To do this, push the center steel sleeve from the top down through the rubber bushing. Now, push the rubber bushing down through the bottom of the hole in the assembly while pulling down from the bottom side of the assembly to free the rubber bushing. 13. Place the shifter assembly on its side and remove the shifter from the plastic retainer on the shift rod. This is done by spreading the metal retainer clip until it clears the shifter. Slide the shifter free of the rod and remove from the vehicle. 14. Install the 4 large aluminum bushings beneath the shift assembly in place of the rubber bushings. The bushing s top small diameter goes into the hole that the rubber bushing used to be in. Line up the assembly and bushings with the holes in the chassis. Secure the assembly to the chassis with the stock bolts that were previously in place. 15. Use the cup remover tool included with the kit to remove the plastic cup on the bottom of the original shifter. To do so, place the cup remover tool on top of the open jaws of a vice, the jaws should be approximately 1 apart. Hang the shifter from the tool as shown, be sure the shifter is inserted completely into the slot in the tool. Insert a punch into the center hole through the plastic cup and tap firmly with a hammer to separate the original shifter from cup. Repeat for the second cup on the side arm of the shifter. 16. Install the plastic cups, which you removed from the original shifter onto the TWM shifter. Grease the cups and small pivot balls generously. Place the cup on a firm surface and push the TWM shifter into it until it pops in. 17. Remove the 4 nuts securing the top plastic half of the assembly. Remove the top half of the assembly to expose the 4 studs protruding from the steel base of the assembly.

18. Install the 4 small black steel spacers on to the 4 studs. 19. Thread all 4 6 mm coupling nuts on to the 4 studs and tighten with a 10mm socket or wrench. 20. Replace the top plastic half of the assembly on top of the coupling nuts you just installed. Secure the plastic assembly with the 4 6 mm bolts, washers and lock washers provided with the kit in the following manner. Place the 6 mm washer on the hole in the plastic assembly. Now slide the lock washer on to the bolt. Insert the bolt/lock washer combo through the washer and tighten down. The correct order for the bolt/lock washer/washer from the top down is: bolt head on top, lock washer, then washer on the bottom. Tighten down. 21. Lightly grease the large pivot ball on the TWM shifter and install the TWM shifter into the assembly in place of the stock shifter. Push the bottom of the shifter into the plastic cup on the end of the shift cable until the retaining clip pops back into the correct position to hold the plastic cup securely. 22. Replace the plastic and rubber bushing on to the top of the large pivot ball and ensure that the orientation is correct so that the plastic bushing s slot accommodates the side arm on the shifter. Also ensure that the rubber o-ring is seated correctly in the plastic bushing. Replace the top cap of the assembly. With the top cap installed, put the L shaped side arm into position and re-seat the spring into it s correct location with each side of the spring resting on either side of the plastic block on the assembly. 23. Replace the large pin that secures the L shaped arm and ensure that it s orientation is correct. Rotate the pin so that it s flat sides line up with the same shaped hole in the assembly. Once lined up, lightly tapping with a hammer may help the pin slide through to the other side. Now re-install the pin that secures the rear of the top cap in place by lightly tapping it through the assembly with a hammer.

24. Drive the clip included with the kit on to the large pin at the front assembly with a 12mm socket to secure it properly against the plastic assembly. Be sure the shaft is pushed all the way into the assembly and the clip is on all the way so there is no free play. You may need to tap the socket with a hammer and apply pressure to the opposite end of the pin to ensure there is no play in the pin. 25. Replace the shift cable on to the L shaped arm and secure with the clip you removed in step 9. 26. Replace both sections of the center console and the shift knob. Now you re ready to drive!
