PI, CHIPS and Peas. Don t make a meal out of solving business problems with PI Coresight. Presented by Chris Cody, Centrica Energy Rhys Kirk, Centrica Energy (RJK Ltd)
Background 2
A little bit about Centrica Energy. We are an international business operating in the UK, Europe, North America, and Trinidad and Tobago. We produce and deliver a mix of gas and oil; trade energy and generate power for millions of homes. Exploration and Production Our Exploration and Production business is one of the leading producers of North Sea gas on the UK Continental Shelf and has a significant operating portfolio internationally, including Norway and Canada. Power Generation Our Power Generation business operates a fleet of gas fired power stations, three offshore and one onshore wind farms. It also has a 20% equity interest in EDF Energy's eight nuclear power stations in the UK. Trading and Optimisation Centrica Energy's midstream business operates in the UK and European energy markets, trading in oil and gas, and power (and other energy related products produced both inside and outside the business, and also supplies British Gas with electricity and gas to ensure we meet the energy needs of our customers. 3
Centrica Energy Power Generation. Our Power Generation business plays a key role in helping Centrica achieve its vision to be the leading integrated energy company. We are focused on being a world class operator of Power Generation assets with a relentless focus on safety. Gas-fired Power Stations Renewables Nuclear Centrica Energy owns and operates four wind farms with a total installed capacity of 490MW. Centrica Energy s fleet of on and offshore wind farms is operated and maintained out of our dedicated renewables base, which was opened in September 2012. The world-class facility is located in the heart of Grimsby s docks, and provides support to our wind farms 24/7, 365 days a year. Combined, our wind farms are capable of producing enough electricity to meet the needs of nearly 350,000 homes. 4

Users lack full knowledge of the PI System. Users left out in the cold. The inner circle of knowledge. PI Coresight PI Data Archive PI Asset Framework (AF) The knows just about enough circle of knowledge. 23
A summary of the challenges. Multiple control systems, essentially the same data in each system. Limited access to data on the control systems for the wider audience. Some data available in the PI Data Archive but the wider audience lack ability to extract data from the PI System. Lots of repeated, granular requests distracting for Operators (and other disciplines). Typically data is only half the story, calculations provide the information users really want. 24

Inspirational quotes. "One fact well understood by observation, and well guided development, is worth a thousand times more than a thousand words" "The drawing shows me at one glance what might be spread over ten pages in a book." Some early success stories. Flashing White State Hey, you ve left Service Mode on the Turbine! Service Mode Room Operator 39
Word soon spread and requests flowed in. We need an automated report on the Turbine Status for each Wind Farm every morning Good job, do you want a raise? Business Support Manager I need to see more details on an individual Turbine, and perform some Turbine comparisons I need to see the Metering Information too. Can we have a visual log of when the number of turbines stopped changes? Room Operators Maintenance Engineers 40
The number of displays increased. 41
Visualisations become infectious! Other parts of the business soon wanted to adopt the same visualisation concepts through PI Coresight. 42
Even IT Support got in on the act. Data Availability and Data Flow visualisations in PI Coresight. 43
There were some bumps in the road. Issue with Kerberos when working with DNS Aliases. Requirement to support per display security. ERD context cannot be passed to hyperlinks to other displays. Hyperlinks open in the same window by default. Requirement to play sounds (audible alert) on certain displays. 44
We smoothed the road a little bit. 45
Smooth road ahead. Feeding enhancement requests to the PI Coresight team. Implemented custom ability to address: ERD context settings Hyperlinks Audible Alerts Per display authorisation Continue to work closely with the PI Coresight team. Excited for PI Coresight v3! 46
What next? Why gravy of course! Analytics PI Integrator for Business Analytics Self serve reporting 47
