Waste Protection Working in the toughest of applications, the Cat 836H has enhanced, landfill specific features to ensure you get the most durable landfill compactor. Roof Mounted Air Conditioning. The roof mounted A/C core has been removed from the rear reducing cleaning frequency and providing better cooling to the cab for longer periods of time. Air Inlet Screen. The vertically corrugated, fine mesh, air inlet screen helps reduce trash from entering the radiator area and allows for debris to fall off. Metal Engine Enclosure, Separated Fan and Cooling System. The all-metal engine enclosure is designed for greater durability in landfill applications and to provide easy access for daily maintenance and inspection. The fan and radiator are isolated from the engine for a quieter running machine and more efficient cooling. A sloped hood provides an improved viewing area. 4

Auto-Reversing, Hydraulically-Driven Demand Fan. A speed controlled, hydraulic fan provides maximum cooling efficiency by directing the appropriate amount of power through the fan system based on the system s temperature. The demand fan automatically adjusts fan speed for optimum cooling, resulting in reduced power draw on the engine, better fuel efficiency and more power for the hydraulics and rimpull. The fan swings out 65 degrees for easy cleaning and reverses automatically at preset intervals to remove trash from the air inlet screen that may have accumulated. The fan also reverses manually from the cab. Optional Cleaner Fingers. Cleaner fingers provide maximum capability to maintain clean Step Tip wheels when working in very cohesive materials and the most severe packing conditions. Bolt Protection. Bolt protection is located on the bottom of the machine and prevents premature wear. Front Frame Guards. Front frame guards prevent trash build-up inside the frame that could damage hydraulic lines. The lift lines are located higher to help prevent damage from debris. Extended Roof. Oversized roof extends out past the cab doors and windows to prevent debris and/or water from settling on them. Engine and Power Train Guards. Hydraulically-actuated engine and power train guards help prevent trash build-up and shield components from demolition debris, trash, wire, rebar and harmful chemicals. Striker Bars. Striker bars are located in front and behind the rear wheels and behind the front wheels. They provide substantial protection from trash that can be thrown or carried by the wheels. The front striker bars also provide for access to the fuel tank in the front frame. Hydraulic Tank and Sight Gauge. The hydraulic tank is guarded to resist damage. The oil sight gauge is visible from ground level for ease of checking. Axle Wrapping and Seal Guarding. Proven and effective guarding prevents material from wrapping and binding around axles and makes cleaning easier. 5

Landfill Specific Features It s about having the right machine on your landfill, so the Cat 836H offers landfill specific features to ensure you get maximum production. Optional Rubber-Mounted Glass Cab. Rubber-mounted glass eliminates the bonding of glass by providing a framework between the front windows which allows for faster replacement in case breakage occurs. Optional Blade Types. Straight Blade. Ideal for most landfill compactor applications, excellent for even spreading and leveling layers of trash Rear Access Walkover Stairway. Easy access to operator s station is provided with the rear access, stairway. An optional swing-out stairway provides for unparalleled access for clean-out, service and maintenance. Standard Halogen Lights. There are: Four halogen flood lights facing rearward (two on rear engine enclosure and one on each stairway) Six halogen floodlights on top of the cab (four facing forward and two facing rearward) Two tail lights Semi-U Blade. For use when pushing loads short distances and preventing excessive loss of material from blade ends while pushing and spreading Fuel Tank. The fast fill tube, fast fuel fill attachment and fuel tank are positioned away from debris and are easily reachable from ground level. Standard Bonded Glass Cab. Bonded glass in the front window eliminates frames for world class operator visibility. (Optional window guard recommended to prevent breakage.) Optional High Intensity Displacement (HID) Lights. All standard halogen lights are provided, as well as four additional 35 Watt HID lights (two facing forward, two facing rearward). The HID lights provide a brighter output to open up the floor of the landfill work area. U-Blade. Designed for applications where long pushes and controlled carry of debris is needed but consistent, level spreading is not so important 6

Operator Station The Cat 836H has been ergonomically designed to enhance operator comfort, allowing for a more productive landfill. Viewing Area. Extended windows open the operator s view for exceptional forward and peripheral viewing. Bonded glass in the front window gives the operator full view to the machine blade. Wipers with intermittent features on both front and back keep the windows clean in any condition. The downsloped hood offers good visibility area to the rear of the machine. Transmission Shifting. Forward, neutral or reverse shifting is controlled by the operator s finger, while the gear selection is controlled by the operator s thumb. Cat Comfort Series Seat. The Cat Comfort air suspension seat, standard in the 836H, is built durable for the rough terrain of the landfill environment. It is six-way adjustable with a retractable 3 in (76.2 mm) seat belt to accommodate operators of all sizes. The seat also features an automotive-style lumbar support for maximum comfort. Control Switches. Rocker and rotary switches for heat, air conditioning and lights are located above the right door. Armrests and Controls. The armrests and blade controls are floor-mounted. The armrest height, tilt and fore aft are adjustable for the comfort of any size operator. Ventilation. Airflow is directed to the operator and windows through 12 louvered vents, including two on each door post. 7

Power Train Field proven components and a legacy of designing for the harsh environment of the waste industry, the Cat 836H offers dependable and reliable performance. Cat C18 Engine with ACERT Technology. The C18 ACERT engine is U.S. EPA Tier 3/EU Stage III emissions compliant. It uses ADEM -IV engine controller to manage fuel delivery and valve timing, along with all other engine systems. Mechanically Actuated Electronic Fuel Injection (MEUI). MEUI combines the technical advancement of an electronic control system with the simplicity of direct mechanically controlled unit fuel injection. It controls injection pressure over the engine operating range so the C18 has complete control over injection timing, duration and pressure. Torque Rise. The torque curve effectively matches the transmission shift points for maximum efficiency. Air-to-Air Aftercooler (ATAAC) System. The ATAAC system is a separate cooling system for the intake manifold air. It routes hot, compressed air from the turbo and cools it with a single pass, air-to-air aluminum heat exchanger. The cooled, compressed air greatly reduces the emissions produces, meeting U.S. EPA Tier 3/EU Stage III requirements. Separate Engine Cooling System. The radiator and fan are isolated from the engine compartment to provide: Lower sound levels Cleaner engine compartment More efficient cooling by drawing air through the side rather than the engine compartment Trash Resistant Modular Radiator. With ten cores standard, cooling capability is improved, even in high ambient temperatures. Serviceability is enhanced, as there is no top tank to remove. The modular radiator uses copper brazed brass tubes and six copper fins per inch. Cat Planetary, Power Shift Transmission. Electronic shifting provides smooth, consistent shifts with finger-tip controls. Large diameter clutches team with four and five planet gear trains for added durability and extended, trouble-free life. Throttle Shift. Programmable, controlled throttle shift works with the transmission Electronic Control Module to prolong transmission life through smooth, efficient directional change shifting. Throttle Lock. Throttle lock allows the operator to set engine speed to a constant rpm and allows the foot to be off of the accelerator pedal. This is similar to an automobile s cruise control. 8

Impeller Clutch Torque Converter and Left Pedal Control. Works with throttle lock to allow the operator to modulate rimpull to wheels and slow machine down without reducing engine speed. This allows the machine to maintain full hydraulic power for blade and steering control which gives the 836H a hydrostatic feel while keeping the benefits of the world s most efficient and powerful drive train and powershift transmission with lock-up control system. Oil Enclosed, Multiple-Disc Brakes. The brakes located on the front axle provide consistent performance and reliability through heat rejection and easy serviceability. Inboard Mounted Brakes. Operating on the low-torque side of the final drive, inboard mounted brakes require less braking force. Brake disc location improves axle oil circulation to promote efficient cooling and heat dissipation and extend service life. Parking Brake. The secondary parking brake is dry disc, spring and oil released. It is mounted on the transmission transfer gear output shaft for manual operation. 20% Rimpull Selected Brakes (20% Rimpull) Maximum Rimpull Selected Left Brake Pedal 9

Wheels and Tips To provide excellent traction and compaction, the Cat 836H Landfill Compactor offers wheel and tip options to help you achieve better landfill life. StepTip. The new StepTip has a distinctive, modified pyramid shape that provides multiple surfaces (steps) to improve compaction and traction. The increased compaction surface occurs in several stages along the height of the 178 mm (7 in) tip. The compaction surfaces remain intact longer during the life of the tip to keep compaction levels high as the tip wears. The tip shape also features a central rib to absorb the bulk of the wear and help the tip maintain its shape as it wears, as well as increasing traction on side slopes. Most tips are straight up and down, which can cause the compacted material to uncompact ( fluffing ) as it rotates out of contact with the surface. The Step Tip s broader base and angled surface tends to clear a path for the top of the tip as it rotates out of contact with the landfill surface. It will not dislodge the compacted material and eliminates fluffing. An additional five tips per wheel are added to the wheel pattern, bringing the number of tips to 40. The tip surface is harder than any previous Cat Landfill Compactor tip, and it is hardened to a greater depth. The lower portion of the tip is made from low carbon steel that has less hardness than the upper portion. This type of steel is easily welded and makes attachment of the tip to the wheel very convenient in the field or shop with a minimum of preheating requirements. No overlayment or hardfacing is required to achieve the expected tip wear life. Optional Self-Cleaning Chopper Wheels. Chopper wheels are designed to deliver maximum compaction and traction in landfill work. An aggressive chopping action is provided by 28 blades per wheel. The staggered, chevron blade arrangement evenly distributes chopping coverage and blade center gusset to help assure maximum refuse demolition. Front and rear wheel blades are mounted differently to maximize chopping and compaction in both forward and reverse. Smooth Wheel Option. If our tip selection does not meet your needs, consider Cat smooth steel wheels. This option ensures that no matter what landfill tip you prefer, you get Cat wheels built to our stringent specifications. Our manufacturing and research engineers work together to design, build and test a complete power train system. The wheels, a critical component to the total system, are manufactured in the same facility as our landfill compactors ensuring the entire system is complemented by each component. Altering critical components can compromise our power train system that is designed for peak performance. If an off-the-shelf manufacturer s wheels are installed that do not meet our design specification and do not balance the load over our finals drives, bearing life could be reduced substantially and cause premature wear of other components resulting in unnecessary downtime. This situation runs contrary to the Caterpillar goal of keeping our customers operating with maximum productivity, performance and compaction. This option also allows our standard axle guard system to work with the components for which it was designed. 10

Hydraulics Minimize operator fatigue with low-effort controls and ease of steering. Electro-Hydraulic Control System. This system provides low-effort, fingertip control to increase productivity while minimizing operator fatigue. The floormounted control pod lever sends electrical signals to a pilot valve mounted on the front frame. Lift Lines. Lift lines are located high on the machine to prevent damage from debris. STIC Steering System. The STIC steer controller uses a single lever for steering and transmission control. Left-hand operations enable the operator to shift and change directions without letting go of the steering controls. Repetitive motion fatigue is minimized through low-effort implement controls and effortless steering. Auto-Blade Positioner. Remove redundancy of raising and lowering blade every time the machine changes direction with the Auto-Blade Positioner. It will automatically raise and lower the blade to any position that an operator sets. Activation occurs when the machine makes a directional change and the blade control joystick is not moved. Reverse and the blade goes up. Forward, the blade goes down. 11

Safety People are the backbone of your business and keeping them safe and productive are the top priorities. Improved Viewing Area. Good visibility is key to a safe work environment. The 836H offers the best viewing area in this size compactor class. Additional standard visibility features that enhance safety include long-life LED tail lights and articulated wiper/washer system with intermittent feature on the front and rear windows. Optional Rear Vision Camera with In-Cab Monitor. An optional rear vision camera with 178 mm (7 in) in-cab color display monitor is available to give a close view of the rear of the compactor. Optional Front Window Guard. Keeping your window from being damaged by flying debris is important to good visibility. An optional tubular guard across the bottom of the front cab helps prevent this from happening. Working 24 Hours a Day. Any time of the day and in all types of weather, the 836H has a number of features to ensure an excellent viewing area. The optional High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights provide brighter output and exceptional lighting for night work. An optional strobe light beacon is also available as a safety feature to help with machine visibility in the landfill. Safe Operator Environment. Cab comfort and operator safety go hand-in-hand. Many features that enhance operator comfort also aid in keeping your operator safe from lowering noise and vibration to designing for decreased repetitive motion. Key standard features that aid operator safety and comfort include low effort implement controls that are easy to adjust by the operator and a cab filtration system that removes dust and debris from the cab. Access and Egress. Getting on and off the machine can be a cause for injury. The 836H offers a number of features to ensure your operators get on and off the machine safely. The right and left side ladder to the bottom platform have landfill specific grooved steps to prevent slipping. Right and left stairways with handrails along the perimeter are standard on the 836H so your operator maintains three points of contact at all times. Additionally, punch stamped tread plates are seen throughout the platform of the compactor to minimize slipping, and two floodlights are positioned to give visibility to the stairways at night. Maintenance Safety. Daily and routine maintenance should not pose a safety hazard to your operator or service technician. With the 836H, design effort was taken to provide convenient access and ease of service. Some key areas include ground level sight gauges on major systems and centralized, ground level lube points. Remote-Mounted ECPC (Transmission) Pressure Taps. The ECPC pressure taps are easily accessible behind the cab platform. Additionally, this area houses a hydraulic service area with easy access to case drain filters. Optional Swing-Out Stairs. Swing-out stairs provide easy access to the engine compartment and for inspection of the rear axle. Engine Service Area.
