Fall 2009 Component Services Inc. Customer Profile Component Services Inc., known as CSI, specializes in component rebuilding such as engines, transmissions, axles, final drives, hydraulic cylinders, pumps and motors, etc. They also have a large inventory of used parts. While their business specializes primarily in industrial and construction equipment, these parts may also work for agricultural applications. CSI started out as a repair service with Eric Pedersen only. Eric was a self-employed mechanic who started working on heavy equipment right out of high school. Eric had always been a one-man show. In 1999, Eric Component Services Inc. Elwood, Indiana realized that he needed more help and hired Dave Yeagley that same year. Eric and Dave focused on rebuilding engines and transmissions. Howards CSI Salvage Yard Elwood, Indiana Eric had met Donna when she was employed at another company also known for their salvage yard with component rebuilding. They were married in 1999. Eric and Donna formed Component Services Inc. as a corporation early in 2002, still maintaining their focus on repair service. Later that year, Kelly Drews quit his job as a highly regarded parts salesman and joined CSI. Kelly was a familiar face; not only was he a former co-worker, he was also best man at Donna and Eric s wedding. Kelly brought 10 years of experience to the company. Upon Kelly s arrival, Eric and Donna built a 60 x 80 steel building to be used as an equipment repair building, connecting to the existing 40 x 50 steel building. Kelly began buying salvage machines, and buying salvage machines, and buying salvage machines (you get the picture). Soon, Kelly was selling more parts than Eric and Dave could build. The yard was full of machines and the building was full of parts. Eric and Donna bought 6 more acres of adjoining property where the 80 x 120 warehouse now sits. Page 2 Component Services Inc continued CSI now employs 17 individuals. Their first building is now the machine shop. All of their engines and component machining is done in-house. The second building (the 60x80) is now home to all of the rebuilders for engines, transmission and final drives, etc. CSI Salvage Yard Elwood, Indiana CSI has been doing business with Howard s for over 10 years. Howard s has been very dependable and prompt with their service. They have a very knowledgeable and helpful staff. It does help that CSI has an employee living in the same town as Howard s - that makes deliveries very helpful. CSI does have a very interesting hobby. They drag race a 4 x 4 Dodge diesel truck. Carey Carter joined CSI in 2005 and he is the driver (when he is not building transmissions!). The CSIDODGE truck has run a 9.51 second pass in the quarter mile at 145.5 mph. The current record is 9.445 seconds. The new engine is a 420 cubic inch B series Cummins with 1650 hp. If everything holds up, it should be a record breaker. TECH TIPS - Ask Dr. Chris Page 7 Cylinder Sleeves for John Deere Engines with 3.858 Cylinder Bore On John Deere engines with 3.858 cylinder bore, there were three (3) different styles of cylinder sleeves: 1) The early design utilized only 1 liner o-ring on the sleeve. This cylinder sleeve is no longer available. It has been replaced with the second design sleeve. 2) The second design was updated to 3 liner o-rings being used on the sleeve. There are 2 grooves on the lower pilot area of this sleeve. See sleeve at RIGHT. 3) The third design was changed to 1 liner o-ring on the sleeve and 2 liner o-rings being used in the cylinder block.
