brands you trust. Valves for H 2 alkylation operations
By design, Tufline Sleeved Plug valves are the optimum solution for handling sulfuric acid and controlling fugitive emissions. Proven performance. Tufline Sleeved Plug valves out-perform gate valves in H 2 alkylation applications. They are more reliable, safer, and provide much greater long-term economy. This is especially true considering today s more stringent fugitive emissions regulations. Tufline Sleeved Plug valves have provided years of successful service for operators of H 2 alkylation units in refineries around the world. Cost cutting features: Tight shutoff with a large sealing surface Exceptional, double fugitive emissions control is built in Easy quarter-turn operation, 90 rotation Easily automated for advanced process control Quick opening and quick closing for greater safety Easy adjustability of both the in-line and external seals Full port models are available Compact, light-weight design for safer and more efficient system design Competitively priced with high alloy gate valves Quickly available from inventory Adaptable and appropriate for most valving requirements in H 2 applications Single source responsibility with a broad line of valves, actuators, and accessories Extended service life for lower, longterm cost-of-ownership Repair services are readily available from nearby Tufline Automation & Service Centers Tertiary, fire-tested stem seal is supplied for H 2 alkylation applications Appropriate applications: Fresh acid feed Spent acid lines Ratio glass on the contactor Block valve for the static mixers Large diameter valves in emulsion lines between the acid settler and the contactor
For H2SO4 alkylation applications, valves are supplied with three sealing systems between the flow media and the atmosphere. The secondary and tertiary seals provide superior protection against external stem leakage, assure long service life, and reduce maintenance requirements. 1. The primary external seal is provided by the interaction of the This proven, fire-tested, fugitiveemissions control top seal is an available option on all Tufline Sleeved Plug valves. plug, the circumferential sealing surface of the PTFE sleeve, and the valve body. 2. Secondary sealing is provided by the PTFE and metal diaphragms. 3. The PTFE wedge ring concentrates the sealing force of the PTFE diaphragm radially against the valve stem for more reliable prevention of external leakage at this secondary seal. 4. Tertiary sealing is provided at the stem by the encapsulated, flexible graphite stem seal. The tertiary flexible graphite dynamic stem seal is totally encapsulated by the inner and outer metallic cartridge rings. 5. At the body/cover joint, tertiary sealing is provided by the flexible graphite cover seal ring. 6. At its outer edge, the metal diaphragm overlaps the flexible graphite cover seal ring to reinforce the tertiary seal at the body-tocover joint. 7. The PTFE sleeve fully surrounds the plug to assure a continuous primary seal. Line leakage in the closed position is virtually impossible This is an important safety consideration. The chemically inert PTFE sleeve provides self lubrication. It resists heat and stress cracking. 8. The 360 port defining lips prevent sleeve deformation, protect against sleeve erosion, and prevent rotation of the sleeve. 9. Easily accessible adjustment bolts assure tight internal and external sealing. 10. Easy to automate, quarter-turn operation.
How and why they work so well. Tufline Sleeved Plug valves have only one moving part. It is a one piece cast tapered plug with stem. The plug fits within the PTFE sleeve. A system of specially designed ribs are cast into the interior of the valve body. These ribs generate high pressure areas which form primary seals between the plug surface and the inner surface of the PTFE sleeve. These multiple primary seals perform four functions: Upstream and downstream, double blocking, bi-directional in-line sealing. Full 360 circumferential sealing around the bottom of the plug. Full 360 circumferential primary external sealing around the top of the plug forms the primary seal to atmosphere. When properly adjusted, this leaves the secondary and tertiary seals as redundant back-up seals. Secondary seals. The primary external seal is backed up by the fully-redundant secondary stem seal. The secondary seal set is a formed PTFE diaphragm and wedge ring assembly which seals against the plug stem. The PTFE diaphragm is backed by a metal diaphragm seal between the valve body neck and the cover. Fire-tested. In case of fire, external protection is provided by a specially designed fire tested top seal. Under normal operating conditions, this cartridge also functions as a tertiary top seal at the valve stem. Valves ordered to API 607 fire test requirements for external leakage are furnished with plugs vented on the upstream side. This allows the escape of pressure from expansion of the media caused by excessive heat. Venting the plug results in a uni-directional valve, and flow direction is indicated with an arrow stamped on the valve body. Simple, safer, compact design. With this simple, unique external sealing system there is no elongated bonnet. There are also no elaborate, expensive, external add-on devices required to control fugitive emissions. The valve s light weight and low profile allow for design of safer and more efficient system configuration. Easy maintenance. The large circumferential sealing surface and redundant sealing systems assure extended, emissions-free service with minimum adjustment. Reliable sealing is easily maintained via simple quarter-turn rotation downward of the three adjustment bolts in the valve cover, near the stem. Tufline Sleeved Plug valves are easily refurbished with no welding, re-machining, or lapping. Refurbishing consists of neutralization of the valve after removal from the pipeline, valve disassembly, and removal of the PTFE sleeve. A new PTFE sleeve, secondary top seal kit, and fire tested cartridge are then easily installed. Compare the cost. You save twice. The initial cost is usually less than comparable gate valves. Your long term cost-ofownership is dramatically reduced because there is less downtime required for valve adjustment, less maintenance, longer service life, and better emissions control. Complementary products. As an option, the valve can be configured for a double block and bleed assembly. The pipe and bleed valve are specified or supplied by the customer. Lined valves. In some facets of processing and handling H 2, fully-lined valves out-perform stainless steel and alloy valves. Unlike alloy valves, Tufline fully-lined valves are virtually unaffected by changes in processing temperature or chemical concentration. In Tufline fully-lined valves, the thick, fluorocarbon lining is locked into the valve body. Blow-out or collapse are virtually impossible. Tufline also manufactures lined accessories. Enhanced fugitive emissions control. Tufline also offers a wide range of valves specifically designed to economically enhance fugitive emissions control. How to order. Indicated at the right are typical ordering specifications. To choose from a full range of options and alternate component materials, see inside back cover of the Tufline Sleeved Plug Valve catalog.
