As used in this chapter: (10) "Cmmercial vehicle" means a mtr vehicle, trailer, r semitrailer used r maintained fr the transprtatin f persns r prperty that perates: (a) as a carrier fr hire, cmpensatin, r prfit; r (b) as a carrier t transprt the vehicle wner's gds r prperty in furtherance f the wner's cmmercial enterprise. (56) "Semitrailer" means every vehicle withut mtive pwer designed fr carrying persns r prperty and fr being drawn by a mtr vehicle and cnstructed s that sme part f its weight and its lad rests r is carried by anther vehicle. (63) "Trailer" means a vehicle withut mtive pwer designed fr carrying persns r prperty and fr being drawn by a mtr vehicle and cnstructed s that n part f its weight rests upn the twing vehicle. 72-7-401. Applicatin f size, weight, and lad limitatins fr vehicles -- Exceptins. (1) (a) Except as prvided in Subsectin (2), the maximum size, weight, and lad limitatins n vehicles under this part apply t all highways thrughut the state. (b) Lcal authrities may nt alter the limitatins except as expressly prvided under Sectins 41-6a-204 and 72-7-408. (2) Except as specifically made applicable, the size, weight, and lad limitatins in this chapter d nt apply t: (a) fire-fighting apparatus; (b) highway cnstructin and maintenance equipment being perated at the site f maintenance r at a cnstructin prject as authrized by a highway authrity; (c) highway cnstructin and maintenance equipment temprarily being perated between a material site and a highway maintenance site r a highway cnstructin prject if:

(i) class; the sectin f any highway being used is nt lcated within a cunty f the first r secnd (ii) authrized fr a specific highway prject by the highway authrity having jurisdictin ver each highway being used; (iii) the distance between the material site and maintenance site r highway cnstructin prject des nt exceed 10 miles; and (iv) the peratr carries in the vehicle written verificatin f the authrizatin frm the highway authrity having jurisdictin ver each highway being used; (d) implements f husbandry incidentally mved n a highway while engaged in an agricultural peratin r incidentally mved fr repair r servicing, subject t the prvisins f Sectin 72-7-407; (e) vehicles transprting lgs r ples frm frest t sawmill: (i) when required t mve upn a highway ther than the natinal system f interstate and defense highways; (ii) if the grss vehicle weight des nt exceed 80,000 punds; and (iii) the vehicle r cmbinatin f vehicles are in cmpliance with Subsectins 72-7-404(1) and (2)(a); and (f) tw trucks r twing vehicles under emergency cnditins when: (i) it becmes necessary t mve a vehicle, cmbinatin f vehicles, special mbile equipment, r bjects t the nearest safe area fr parking r temprary strage; (ii) (iii) n ther alternative is available; and the mvement is fr the safety f the traveling public. (3) (a) Except when perating n the natinal system f interstate and defense highways, a mtr vehicle carrying livestck as defined in Sectin 4-1-8, r a mtr vehicle carrying raw grain if the grain is being transprted by the farmer frm his farm t market prir t bagging, weighing, r prcessing, may exceed by up t 2,000 punds the tandem axle weight limitatins specified under Sectin 72-7-404 withut btaining an verweight permit under Sectin 72-7-

406. (b) Subsectin (3)(a) is an exceptin t Sectins 72-7-404 and 72-7-406. 72-7-402. Limitatins as t vehicle width, height, length, and lad extensins. (1) (a) Except as prvided by statute, all state r federally apprved safety devices and any ther lawful appurtenant devices, including refrigeratin units, hitches, air line cnnectins, and lad securing devices related t the safe peratin f a vehicle are excluded fr purpses f measuring the width and length f a vehicle under the prvisins f this part, if the devices are nt designed r used fr carrying carg. (b) Lad-induced tire bulge is excluded fr purpses f measuring the width f vehicles under the prvisins f this part. (c) Appurtenances attached t the sides r rear f a recreatinal vehicle that is nt a cmmercial mtr vehicle are excluded fr purpses f measuring the width and length f the recreatinal vehicle if the additinal width r length f the appurtenances des nt exceed six inches. (2) A vehicle unladen r with a lad may nt exceed a width f 8-1/2 feet. (3) A vehicle unladen r with a lad may nt exceed a height f 14 feet. (4) (a) (i) A single-unit vehicle, unladen r with a lad, may nt exceed a length f 45 feet including frnt and rear bumpers. (ii) In this sectin, a truck tractr cupled t ne r mre semitrailers r trailers is nt cnsidered a single-unit vehicle. (b) (i) Except as prvided under Subsectin (4)(b)(iii), a semitrailer, unladen r with a lad, may nt exceed a length f 48 feet excluding refrigeratin units, hitches, air line cnnectins, and safety appurtenances. (ii) There is n verall length limitatin n a truck tractr and semitrailer cmbinatin when the semitrailer length is 48 feet r less. (iii) A semitrailer that exceeds a length f 48 feet but des nt exceed a length f 53 feet may perate n a rute designated by the department r within ne mile f that rute.

(c) (i) Tw trailers cupled tgether, unladen r with a lad, may nt exceed an verall length f 61 feet, measured frm the frnt f the first trailer t the rear f the secnd trailer. (ii) There is n verall length limitatin n a truck tractr and duble trailer cmbinatin when the trailers cupled tgether measure 61 feet r less. (d) All ther cmbinatins f vehicles, unladen r with a lad, when cupled tgether, may nt exceed a ttal length f 65 feet, except the length limitatins d nt apply t cmbinatins f vehicles perated at night by a public utility when required fr emergency repair f public service facilities r prperties, r when perated under a permit under Sectin 72-7-406. (5) (a) Subject t Subsectin (4), a vehicle r cmbinatin f vehicles may nt carry any lad extending mre than three feet beynd the frnt f the bdy f the vehicle r mre than six feet beynd the rear f the bed r bdy f the vehicle. (b) A passenger vehicle may nt carry any lad extending beynd the line f the fenders n the left side f the vehicle nr extending mre than six inches beynd the line f the fenders n the right side f the vehicle. (6) Any exceptin t this sectin must be authrized by a permit as prvided under Sectin 72-7-406. (7) Any persn wh vilates this sectin is guilty f a class C misdemeanr. 72-7-403. Twing requirements and limitatins n twing. (1) (a) The draw-bar r ther cnnectin between any tw vehicles, ne f which is twing r drawing the ther n a highway, may nt exceed 15 feet in length frm ne vehicle t the ther except: (i) in the case f a cnnectin between any tw vehicles transprting ples, pipe, machinery, r structural material that cannt be dismembered when transprted upn a ple trailer as defined in Sectin 41-6a-102; r (ii) when perated under a permit under Sectin 72-7-406.

(b) When the cnnectin between the tw vehicles is a chain, rpe, r cable, a red flag r ther signal r clth nt less than 12 inches bth in length and width shall be displayed n r near the midpint f the cnnectin. (2) A persn may nt perate a cmbinatin f vehicles when any trailer, semitrailer, r ther vehicle being twed: (a) (b) whips r swerves frm side t side dangerusly r unreasnably; r fails t fllw substantially in the path f the twing vehicle. (3) A persn wh vilates this sectin is guilty f a class C misdemeanr. 72-7-405. Measuring vehicles fr size and weight cmpliance -- Summary pwers f peace fficers -- Penalty fr vilatins. (1) Any peace fficer having reasn t believe that the height, width, length, r weight f a vehicle and lad is unlawful may require the peratr t stp the vehicle and submit t a measurement r weighing f the vehicle and lad. (2) A peace fficer may require that the vehicle be driven t the nearest scales r prt-fentry if the scales r prt-f-entry is within three miles. (3) (a) A peace fficer, special functin fficer, r prt-f-entry agent may measure r weigh a vehicle and vehicle lad fr cmpliance with this chapter. (b) If, upn measuring r weighing a vehicle and lad, it is determined that the height, width, length, r weight is unlawful, the measuring r weighing peace fficer, special functin fficer, r prt-f-entry agent may require the peratr t park the vehicle in a suitable place. The vehicle shall remain parked until the vehicle r its lad is adjusted r a prtin f the lad is remved t cnfrm t legal limits. All materials unladed shall be cared fr by the wner r peratr f the vehicle at his risk. (4) An peratr wh fails r refuses t stp and submit the vehicle and lad t a measurement r weighing, r wh fails r refuses when directed by a peace fficer, special functin fficer, r prt-f-entry agent t cmply with this sectin is guilty f a class C misdemeanr.

(5) Any driver r wner f a vehicle wh vilates Sectin 72-7-404 r 72-7-406 is guilty f a class C misdemeanr. 41-6a-1623. Braking systems required Adptin f perfrmance requirements by department. (1) A mtr vehicle and a cmbinatin f vehicles shall have a service braking system which will stp the mtr vehicle r cmbinatin f vehicles within: (a) 40 feet frm an initial speed f 20 miles per hur n a level, dry, smth, hard surface; r (b) a shrter distance as may be specified by the department in accrdance with federal standards. (2) A mtr vehicle and a cmbinatin f vehicles shall have a parking brake system: (a) adequate t hld the mtr vehicle r cmbinatin f vehicles n any grade n which it is perated under all cnditins f lading n a surface free frm snw, ice r lse material; r (b) which cmplies with perfrmance standards issued by the department in accrdance with federal standards. (3) In additin t the requirements f Subsectins (1) and (2), if necessary fr safe peratin, the department may by rule require additinalbraking systems in accrdance with federal standards. (4) A vilatin f this sectin is an infractin. 41-6a-1634. Safety chains n twed vehicles required Exceptins. (1) A twed vehicle shall be cupled by means f a safety chain, cable r equivalent device, in additin t the regular trailer hitch r cupling. (2) Except as prvided under Subsectin (3), a safety chain, cable r equivalent device shall be: (a) securely cnnected with the chassis f the twing vehicle, the twed vehicle, and the drawbar; (b) f sufficient material and strength t prevent the tw vehicles frm becming separated; and (c) attached t: (i) have n mre slack than is necessary fr prper turning; (ii) the trailer drawbar t prevent it frm drpping t the grund; and

(iii) assure the twed vehicle fllws substantially in the curse f the twing vehicle in case the vehicles becme separated. (3) A vilatin f Subsectin (1) r (2) is an infractin. (4) The prvisins f Subsectin (2) d nt apply t a: (a) semitrailer having a cnnecting device cmpsed f a fifth wheel and king pin assembly; (b) ple trailer; r (c) trailer being twed by a bicycle. 41-6a-1604. Mtr vehicle head lamps, tail lamps, stp lamps, and ther lamps Requirements Penalty. (1) A mtr vehicle shall be equipped with at least tw head lamps with at least ne n each side f the frnt f the mtr vehicle. (2) (a) A mtr vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, ple trailer, and any ther vehicle which is being drawn at the end f a cmbinatin f vehicles, shall be equipped with at least tw tail lamps and tw r mre red reflectrs munted n the rear. (b) (i) Except as prvided under Subsectins (2)(b)(ii), (2)(c), and Sectin 41-6a-1612, all stp lamps r ther lamps and reflectrs munted n the rear f a vehicle shall display r reflect a red clr. (ii) A turn signal r hazard warning light may be red r yellw. (c) Either a tail lamp r a separate lamp shall be s cnstructed and placed as t illuminate with a white light the rear registratin plate. (3) (a) A mtr vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, and ple trailer shall be equipped with tw r mre stp lamps and flashing turn signals. (b) A supplemental stp lamp may be munted n the rear f a vehicle, if the supplemental stp lamp: (i) emits a red light; (ii) is munted: (A) and cnstructed s that n light emitted frm the device, either direct r reflected, is visible t the driver;

(B) nt lwer than 15 inches abve the radway; and (C) n the vertical center line f the vehicle; and (iii) is the size, design, and candle pwer that cnfrms t federal standards regulating stp lamps. (4) (a) Each head lamp, tail lamp, supplemental stp lamp, flashing turn lamp, ther lamp, r reflectr required under this part shall cmply with the requirements and limitatins established under Sectin 41-6a-1601. (b) The department, by rules made under Sectin 41-6a-1601, may require trucks, buses, mtr hmes, mtr vehicles with truck-campers,trailers, semitrailers, and ple trailers t have additinal lamps and reflectrs. (5) The department, by rules made under Sectin 41-6a-1601, may allw: (a) ne tail lamp n any vehicle equipped with nly ne when it was made; (b) ne stp lamp n any vehicle equipped with nly ne when it was made; and (c) passenger cars and trucks with a width less than 80 inches and manufactured r assembled prir t January 1, 1953, need nt be equipped with electric turn signal lamps. (6) (a) As used in this sectin, cntinuusly flashing light system means a light system fr a supplemental stp lamp described in Subsectin (3)(b) in which: (i) the stp lamp r reflectr pulses rapidly fr n mre than five secnds when the brake is applied and then cnverts t a cntinuus light as a nrmal stp lamp r reflectr until the time that the brake is released; and (ii) the rapid pulsing described in Subsectin (6)(a)(i) may nt be repeated upn a subsequent applicatin f the brakes fr a lck-ut time perid f at least five secnds after the release f the brakes under Subsectin (6)(a)(i). (b) A mtr vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, and ple trailer may be equipped with a cntinuusly flashing light system. (7) A vilatin f this sectin is an infractin. 41-6a-1627. Mirrrs. (1)

(a) A mtr vehicle shall be equipped with a mirrr munted n the left side f the vehicle. (b) A mirrr under Subsectin (1)(a) shall be lcated t reflect t the driver a view f the highway t the rear f the vehicle. (2) (a) Except fr a mtrcycle, in additin t the mirrr required under Subsectin (1), a mtr vehicle shall be equipped with a mirrrmunted either inside the vehicle apprximately in the center r utside the vehicle n the right side. (b) The mirrr under Subsectin (2)(a) shall be lcated t reflect t the driver a view f the highway t the rear f the vehicle. (3) A vilatin f this sectin is an infractin.
