Afton Approve w/comment Similarly, in Table E-28 where T-10A matrix data is shown, first column should read "T-10A or T-12A" instead of just T-10A. Afton is supportive of including Mack T-12A BOI guidelines in section E.4.7. We have two suggestions intended to improve the clarity and consistency of this section: Page 1 of 3 1/11/2012
Ballot Summary and Comments on Revision of API 1509 BOI/VGRA 1. Modify the margin of safety variable definition Y1 & Y2 and Table E.28 MRV cell to include or 100-hour T-12A 2. Replace term original candidate oil with original oil. The term candidate normally refers to the oil in question and not the original oils that have been previously tested. This is consistent with other similar references within API 1509. If these revisions are accepted, Section E.4.7 would read as (all changes highlighted): E.4.7 Neither a Mack T-10A test nor a Mack T-12A test is required for base oil interchange if the saturates and sulfur content (within the precision of the two analytical tests) of the interchange base oil fall within the range of the saturates and sulfur content of the base oils in the original candidate oils (minimum two original candidate oils), and fresh oil MRV-TP1 (ASTM D 4684) @ 20ºC of the interchange candidate is equal to or less than the BOI matrix limit. The BOI matrix limit is defined as: BOI matrix limit 25000 Margin of safety is defined as: margin of safety margin of safety largest of Y1 X1, Y 2 X 2, or 0 where X1 = fresh oil MRV-TP1 @ 20ºC for original candidate oil 1 X2 = fresh oil MRV-TP1 @ 20ºC for original candidate oil 2 Y1 = MRV-TP1 @ 20ºC of 75-hour T-10A or 100-hour T-12A sample for original candidate oil 1 Y2 = MRV-TP1 @ 20ºC of 75-hour T-10A or 100-hour T-12A sample for original candidate oil 2 An example of this guideline s application is provided in Table E-28. Ballot Item 1: Update API1509 Appendix E Section E.4.7 and Table E-27 to Allow Mack T-10A BOI/VGRA as the Mack T-12 BOI/VGRA Adoption of Mack T-10A BOI/VGRA as the Mack T-12A BOI/VGRA is supported by the HDEOCP acceptance of the Mack T12 as a replacement for the Mack T-10. Input from the OEM sponsor of the Mack Tests, Volvo Powertrain/Mack, confirmed no objection to the new Mack T-12A BOI/VGRA. Data supporting the new Mack T-12A BOI/VGRA is supported in the attachment. The proposed changes to API 1509 are given below. E.4.7 Neither a Mack T-10A test nor a Mack T-12A test is required for base oil interchange if the saturates and sulfur content (within the precision of the two analytical tests) of the interchange base oil fall within the range of the saturates and sulfur content of the base oils in the original candidate oils (minimum two candidate oils), and fresh oil MRV-TP1 (ASTM D 4684) @ 20ºC of the interchange candidate is equal to or less than the BOI matrix limit. Mack T-12A BOI/VGRA Guidelines API BOI/VGRA Meeting Oct 27, 2010 The Lubrizol Corporation 2010, all rights reserved
Background Mack T-12A ASTM has defined a MRV-TP1 run on 100hr T-12 drain as the T-12A The T-12A has been shown to be equivalent to the T- 10A and has been accepted as a substitution test for the T-10A at the existing T-10A limits. Action: Subgroup should address BOI/VGRA guidelines for the Mack T-12A* *Subgroup did not meet, however this is a proposal for consideration. The Lubrizol Corporation 2010, all rights reserved

Lighter viscosity grades read to heavier The T-10A VGRA is based on pumpability Heavier viscosity grades read to lighter If the T-12A is replacing the T-10A, then the VGRA should be the same heavier viscosity grades read to lighter The Lubrizol Corporation 2010, all rights reserved Recommend T-12A VGRA match T-10A VGRA T-12A: 15W-40 reads to 0W-XX, 5W-XX, 10W-XX
Base Oil Interchange: T-10 vs T-12 Mack T-10 Mack T-12 BOI guidelines for T-10 & T-12 are similar The Lubrizol Corporation 2010, all rights reserved
Base Oil Interchange: T-10A Mack T-10A Mack T-12A Since T-12A has been determined to be equivalent to the T-10A, the BOI guidelines should match The Lubrizol Corporation 2010, all rights reserved
Conclusion Mack T-12A BOI/VGRA Guidelines Since ASTM has accepted the T-12A as a substitution to the T-10A, the BOI/VGRA guidelines for the T-12A should match the BOI/VGRA guidelines for the T-10A Recommend accepting following changes to API 1509: Appendix E: Add Mack T-12A to E.4.7 & Table E-27 Appendix F: Modify Table F-12 to include T-12A and the following read: 15W-40 reads to 0W-XX, 5W-XX, 10W-XX The Lubrizol Corporation 2010, all rights reserved
