I say this because it is a waiting month. Sure the other months like November or December and even January are not fun. But with those months we know it will be cold, wintery and we don t even dare to think of riding for fear of getting let down by Mother Nature. The first time in December our thoughts move toward that big two wheeled friend in the garage, she will dump two feet snow on us just to keep our head down. Who is boss now? Now during February for example, it is like you can see the light at the end of the tunnel, cause you know we are on the downhill side of winter. Kind of like the hump day or month of winter. Hello fellow riders I look forward to a new year as the LOH officer. My hopes for the 2013 riding season include a ride to Burlington, Iowa as well as other calendar events. More details to follow. LOH will host a meet and greet on February 23rd @ 10am at my house, 420 S 16th Street, Quincy. This event will be a good opportunity for The problem is, it is still winter, but we are almost out of the woods, we can feel it. So we get a warm day or two, just as a tease from Mother Nature you might say. The only thing that can make it worse is 50plus degree day during the work week, and you can t take the day off. I even called in sick one day back in December, on a 50 degree day, truly sick. My boss wondered if I was actually sick. I know by the comment he made, nice day for a ride, eh? So what does a HOG member do during these cold months? Well, there are only a few choices. First, you can take your two wheel baby to the local Harley Davidson dealer for some upgrades to the engine, or maybe more chrome or a service to get it ready for the break in the weather. Possibly Ladies of Harley Lynn Schlientz- LOH Officer us to get better acquainted and share our ideas for the new year! I look forward to getting to know more LOH members and hearing all the awesome ideas we can come up with. you might trailer the bike to a warmer local for a mid-winter ride. How about just going for a ride in 30 degree weather, just to thumb your nose at the weather gods to show them they can t keep you indoors. To that I say this, Please, Please, Please let it be riding season SOOOOOON!!!!!!! Keep your chin up, we will be blowing back hair very soon. Jim I know that LOH events are events for the entire chapter, so feel free to share any ideas you may have. Please RSVP me at 501-749-6136 or lynn_814@yahoo.com. Food and drinks will be provided and all are welcomed. People are like motorcycles: each is customized a bit differently

Page 6 River Roads Chapter Harley Owners Group The Safety Corner Curt Lain - Safety Officer Road Hazards Take Note!! Old Harleys don t leak oil, they mark their territory!!!! While we are not in riding season it can always be a time to think about our safety! The tips I am about to share should be common nature to us as riders but maybe not to others. Share these 10 tips with your family and friends. These and more tips are available online @ http://www.msf-usa.org/. 1. There are a lot more cars and trucks than motorcycles on the road, and some drivers don't " recognize" a motorcycle: They ignore it! Look for motorcycles, especially when checking traffic at an intersection. 2. Because of its small size,a motorcycle may look farther away than it is. It may also be difficult to judge a motorcycle's speed. When checking traffic to turn at an intersection or into a driveway, predict a motorcycle is closer than it looks. 3. A motorcycle can be easily hidden in a car's blind spots or masked by objects or backgrounds outside a car. Take an extra moment to thoroughly check traffic, whether you're changing lanes or turning at intersections. 4. A motorcycle may seem to be moving faster than it really is. Don't assume all motorcyclists are speed demons! 5. Motorcyclists often slow by downshifting or merely rolling off the throttle, thus not activating the brake light. Allow more following distance, say 3 or 4 seconds. At intersections, predict a motorcyclist may slow down without visual warning. 6. Turn signals on a motorcycle usually are not self-canceling, (except on our HOGS) thus some riders sometimes forget to turn them off after a turn or lane change. Make sure a motorcycle's signal is for real. 7. Motorcyclists often adjust position within a lane to be seen more easily and to minimize the effects of road debris, passing vehicles, and wind. Understand that motorcyclists adjust lane position for a purpose, not to be reckless or show off or to alow you to share the lane with them. 8. Maneuverablity is one of a motorcycle's better characteristics, especially at slower speeds and with good road conditions, but don't expect a motorcyclist to always be able to dodge out of the way. 9. Stopping distance for motorcycles is nearly the same as our cars, but slippery pavement makes stopping quickly difficult. Allow more following distance behind a motorcycle because it can't always stop "on a dime". 10. When a motorcycle is in motion, don't think of it as a motorcycle, think of it as a person.
