Some Useful tips on Belt Installation & Maintenance Correct design of drives using V-Belts ensures longer belt life and a higher degree of operating safety. Premature failure can often be traced back to faulty installation or maintenance. Some useful tips are given below: PULLEYS: The grooves should be in good condition, free from scores or sharp edges, all dimensions should conform to the relevant ISO/RMA standards. ALIGNMENT: is recommended. Shafts and pulleys should be correctly aligned prior to belt installation. A maximum tolerance of ½ in both planes MULTIPLE V-BELT DRIVES: Assemble belts in matched sets either by measurement or by manufacturer's code numbers/markings. Re-measure belts if they have been stored for sometime. INSTALLATION OF V BELTS: The drive center distance should be reduced prior to installation of belts so that they may be fitted without undue force. The severe stresses placed upon V Belts when they are forced over the pulley flanges can damage the cover fabric and the high quality, low stretch tension members. BELT TENSIONING: The drive should be tensioned correctly and re-tensioned after 30 minutes and 4 hours at full load, to compensate for the small initial belt stretch and bedding into the pulley grooves. IDLER PULLEYS The use of idler pulleys should be avoided. If for design reasons, such an arrangement is necessary, then an inside idler should be used in preference to an outside idler. If the Idler pulleys have to be used for the foregoing reasons the following criteria should be observed in the drive design: A. Position in the belt span b. Diameter of the pulley c. Shape d. The adjustment travel of the pulley, both for tensioning and re-tensioning the belts e. Correction of the power rating per belt Minimum diameter for Internal idlers Internal idler should be greater than or equal to smallest loaded pulley in the drive system. Minimum diameter for External idlers External idler should be greater than or equal to 1.35 times the smallest loaded pulley in the drive system. STORAGE & MAINTENANCE The physical properties of V-Belts could change significantly over a period of time if not stored properly. It is important that the storage area is dust/moisture free, protected against direct sunlight/high intensity artificial light eg flourescent lights producing ozone, at a storage temperature of +15º C (+59 º F) and +25º C (+77º F). Belts should be stored without stress, tension or pressure. It is recommended that V Belt drives be regularly inspected for loss of belt tension, unusual heat build up or wear. Re-tension or replace when necessary. Should an individual belt in a matched set require replacement for any reason, a complete new set must be fitted. Belts from different manufacturers must not be mixed on the same drive. V belts need no special attention. Belt dressings must not be used.
