Series 3 Application For decades, Danfoss has been the world s leading manufacturer of radiator valves and radiator thermostats. Danfoss invented the radiator thermostat back in 1943 and later developed it. Today, radiators are often manufactured with integrated valves (i.e. built-in valves), which are built into the radiator at the time of manufacture, the radiator thermostat being fitted on site by the installer. Radia- tors with integrated valves are known as valve radiators or compact radiators. As an alternative to the well-established RA-N and RA-U valves, Danfoss has developed integrated valves for use with valve radiators. Danfoss integrated valves fit all valve radiators and guarantee the same efficient operation as other Danfoss valves. Advantages used with valve radiators offer the following advantages: Ÿ Valve housings have been pre-installed prior to delivery to site. Ÿ Pipe connections do not have to be soldered or welded. Connections: Rp 1/2" inside thread or G 3/4" outside thread. Ÿ Quicker installation. Ÿ Presetting as an integrated feature. Ÿ Elegant design with hidden piping. Ÿ Pipe connections are made underneath the radiator - which is a great advantage in horizontal piping installations. Ÿ By mounting a special bypass union it is possible to change from two-pipe operation to one-pipe operation and to drain and disconnect the radiator from the system.
Processing by the radiator manufacturer a) Valve radiator with valve insert b) Valve radiator with integrated valve In principle, the valve radiator consists of: Ÿ A heating surface made of plates or pipes. Ÿ A welded-on fitting, in which the integrated valve is fitted. Ÿ An integrated valve. The valve radiator is subsequently equipped with a radiator thermostat, once the heating installation is complete. The hydraulic parts of a valve radiator can be designed in two ways: a) Valve insert: In this case the valve seat is an integral part of the fitting. This solution requires very tight tolerances in the manufacturing and placing of the fitting, since the valve seat fitting and the insert will often come from two different manufacturers. b) Integrated valve: The valve seat is an integrated part of the integrated valve. The responsibility for the whole hydaulic solution thus rests with the valve manufacturer. provide maximum assurance of the reliable operation of valve radiators. That is why Danfoss has decided to manufacture integrated valves rather than valve inserts. Fittings The fitting has been welded or soldered into the radiator. It consists of three parts: Ÿ valve fitting for integrated valve, Ÿ connection fittings for pipe connections, Ÿ riser pipes, connecting the valve and connection fittings. All Danfoss integrated valves are supplied with built-in presetting feature. The valve fitting is placed so as to allow the integrated valve to be screwed into the end of the radiator. The connection fitting has been designed for two-pipe operation with floor connection (for one-pipe operation and wall connection, see p. 4). Note: Danfoss matches the design of its integrated valves with the different fittings used by radiator manufacturers. 2

That is why the installation process has to be automatic or semi-automatic. Danfoss will assist radiator manufacturers with advice on installation techniques. Because of the thermal load limit of the sealants (120 C), the valves should not be installed until the radiators have been powder-lacquered. The integrated valve should be tightened into the fitting using a torque of 30 Nm (±10%). A cap is provided to protect the integrated valve against damage in transit and during the construction phase. Danfoss thermostats are easy, quick and simple to install because of their patented snap-on connection feature. More detailed information on RA 2000 is available from data-sheets, operating instructions and general instructions. 3
One-pipe and two-pipe installations One-pipe installation Today, most valve radiators are made for two-pipe operation as standard. Conversion to one-pipe operation is effected by installing special bypass unions. These unions also make it possible to drain and disconnect the radiators from the system. By mounting the relevant unions on the fittings, it is possible to choose either wall or floor connection. One-pipe installation In a one-pipe installation, there is normally a demand for high flow rates through the radiators, whilst the differential pressure is low. This is why the k v values should be relatively high (approx. 0.7-0.8). An integrated valve type 013G0370 (RA-N) with pre-setting "N" must be mounted. The distribution of Two-pipe installation water between radiator and bypass can be set on the bypass union in accordance with the pipe network calculations. In this situation the pre-set position is always N. Two-pipe installation In a two-pipe installation, the k v values should be pre-set for each radiator in accordance with the pipe network calculations. Values are set easily and simply by means of the pre-setting ring on the valves. Danfoss is able to offer two capacity ranges for two-pipe installations: a) A range for large volume flows (Nvalves). b) A range for small volume flows, e.g. district heating installations with big temperature differences (U-valves). At setting N, the k v value in accordance with EN 215-1 can be stated as Xp = 2 K. At lower preset values, Xp is lowered to setting 1, where Xp = 0.5 K. The k v values indicate the valve capacity, when the valve is fully open. 2) The max. differential pressure is the maximum recommended differential pressure that the valve should be exposed to if satisfactory regulation is to be ensured. To obtain low-noise operation, it is recommended to choose pumps that match system pressure losses. Experience indicates that in most two-pipe installations a differential pressure across the valves of 0.05-0.2 bar is sufficient. The differential pressure can be reduced by using a Danfoss differential pressure regulator. 3) When using a RAW radiator thermostat, the P-Band will be increased by factor 1.6. RAW at setting N aligns manufacturers information of EN 215. The setting values can be read directly from the table above: k v = Q (m 3 /h) Dp (bar) Other technical informations can be found in the product data-sheets. 4

Capacity The two integrated valves (013G0370 and 013G0371) have k v values and recommended setting ranges which partly overlap. P-band: The p-band of a valve is the change of room temperature which is necessary to move the valve from closed position to the position that allows the desired volume flow to pass (in relation to the dimension chosen). Because of the good regulating feature of the RA 2000 thermostat, we recommend that the valves be sized with a p-band of between 0.5 and 2 K. Presetting Reference mark Reference mark Factory setting and one-pipe system Presetting range The dimensioned presetting values of the integrated valves of types RA-N and RA- U, can be adjusted easily and accurately without the use of tools (factory setting: N): Ÿ Remove the protective cap of the radiator thermostat. Ÿ Find the reference mark. Ÿ Turn the setting ring until the desired presetting aligns with the reference mark. Ÿ Control that the setting is correct. The presetting is controlled directly without the use of equipment. After installation in the radiator, the reference mark of the valve will not always be positioned in the same place. Presettings can be selected within the range of 1 to 7 steps. At N setting the valve is fully open. Setting in the shaded areas of the drawing should be avoided. In a one-pipe installation, the N setting must be used. For Danfoss elements RA 2000 and RAW, a theft protection device is available; this provides added security against unwanted adjustment of the preset values. Design work Different standard software programmes can be used for calculating pipe networks. These programmes are updated regularly as new information is released by the radiator manufacturers. The programmes are not sold by Danfoss. By means of software or calculations of pipe networks, it is possible to find the necessary preset values for the integrated valves in two-pipe installations. In a one-pipe installation, software or calculation can be used to find the necessary oversize of radiators and to calculate the water supply share to be assigned to the individual radiator. Since many programmes also contain dimensioning data for differential pressure regulators and volume regulators, the project manager can include all necessary regulation components in the same calculation. 5
Installation work on site Installation work is limited to attaching and adjusting the radiator, installing any unions or clamping ring fittings, presetting the valve and installing the sensor. It is extremely easy to preset the water flow with a Danfoss integrated valve. It requires no tools, is easy to read and can be checked at any time by the project manager and site manager. In the N position the presetting of the valve is cancelled. This position can be used if the installation is to be flushed. In the case of one-pipe installations, attention should be paid to the fact that the bypass unions contain parts to prevent unwanted heat emission. Installation instructions for Danfoss radiator thermostats are printed on the packaging. Unwanted heat emission in one-pipe installation When the valve is closed, the radiator can be heated by heat conduction from the connection fitting, through which there is a constant flow. The extent of such unwanted heat emission depends on the design of the fitting, the flow temperature and the volume flow. Unwanted heat emission can be reduced in such installations, but not completely eliminated. Sound measurements Under certain conditions, a heating installation can generate noise which can become a nuisance. The most important factors in the formation of such noise are the pipe system, the flow volume, the differential pressure, the hydraulics of the valve, the temperature conditions and - not least - the type of radiator in use. Danfoss carries out noise measurements on integrated valves installed in the radiator manufacturer s products as part of an ongoing cooperation with the manufacturer. To prevent noise from the water flow the differential pressure should not exceed 0.2 bar. ISO quality inspection Danfoss has held an ISO 9000 certificate for many years. ISO certification ensures that development, design and construction are carried out in accordance with the quality requirements contained in ISO 9001 and 9002. Final inspection is carried out in accordance with ISO 9003. 6
