They are compatible with most BMS systems. This Revenue Grade meter can capture kwh/kw energy and demand data, as well as other relevant energy parameters for high accuracy applications such as demand response or tenant sub-metering. Unique Selling Points Compatible with most BMS systems, communicating via RS-485 using BACnet MS/TP or Modbus RTU protocols. MD-BMED model provides backlit display and Ethernet communication options via BACnet IP or Modbus TCP. Measures over 80 electrical, power and energy parameters. Product Description OVERVIEW Welcome to an overview of the MD-BMS and MD-BMED electricity sub-metering models; a series of advanced BACnet and Modbus protocol electrical power meters. These meters are compatible with all BMS systems, being a BACnet Testing Labs certified smart sensor (B-SS) device. A range of metering kits is offered. Each metering kit includes the MD series meter with either three (3) current transformers (CTs) or three (3) Rogowski Coils of a specified current range for use in single or three-phase electrical services. Each meter is factory configured to match the selected CTs. The meter can be used in Single Phase, Three Phase-Four Wire (WYE), or Three Phase-Three Wire (Delta) power services. The description of available metering kits is noted in the Order Information and Pricing section later in this spec. For ease of installation, unlike many competitor products, the MD-BMS and MD-BMED power meter do not require a separate enclosure for installation. It can often be mounted inside the electrical panel along with the CTs. Mounting options are enhanced with new mounting tabs that allow mounting in multiple positions or by mounting to a DIN rail in a control panel. Furthermore, the meter does not require a separate power supply, deriving its power off the measured circuits. These new MD series power meter models have a USB service port that is used in conjunction with the free ViewPoint software to make installation, data verification and servicing simple and easy. Just connect your laptop with the ViewPoint service software to the meter with a USB Type AB cable and the meter becomes powered and communicates via USB! There are no special converters to purchase and install. To make the job of startup and checkout even easier, the MD-BMED model provides an integrated 2 line by 16 character backlit display which cycles through key setup and measurement data for local feedback to the installer. The display can also be set into a manual mode, allowing the display to become fixed on the particular display parameter the user chooses. Having this display available during installation is a fast way to validate your meter s electrical readings at startup, before the BMS is ready to communicate with and begin gathering information from the power meter. ELECTRICAL MEASUREMENT CAPABILITIES The MD-BMS/BMED power meters provide the ability to measure any of over 80 parameters including: This power meter provides a superior level of electrical measurement parameters compared to other meters of its type. This allows the customer to meet the basic power and energy data needs of today with the ability to handle future reconfiguration into other electrical diagnostic measurements in the future. MD SERIES BUNDLED POWER METERING KITS NOW INCLUDE HIGHER ACCURACY OPTIONS Recently added to the line are highly-accurate Revenue Grade current transformers (CTs) and Revenue Grade power metering bundled kits to the MD-BMS and MD-BMED power metering line. The addition of these higher accuracy devices provides electrical metering options for applications requiring higher accuracy measurement capabilities; involving energy cost allocation, critical equipment monitoring, co-generation applications, data center power monitoring and in some cases, tenant metering. The new Revenue Grade power metering bundled kits provide metering system measurement accuracies of better than 0.5%, compared to the typical 0.8% to 1.3% levels provided in the standard metering kits. These meters remain compatible with all BMS systems, being a BACnet Testing Labs certified smart sensor (B-SS) device. MD SERIES UNBUNDLED METERS AND CTs for ACCURACY OR CURRENT RANGE UPDATES If you prefer an ala carte approach to ordering metering equipment, all MD series power meters and current transformer devices are available as separately orderable items. These include the new Revenue Grade CTs. This new ordering availability supports existing power meter changeover to different current ranges and for upgrading existing power metering applications to the new higher accuracy Revenue Grade capability. Order the bundled metering kits for new work due to the convenience associated with receiving all needed components together with the meter parameters being factory pre-configured to the CT selected. Pricing and availability is noted later in the Order Information and Pricing section. SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE The architecture diagrams below illustrate how the new MD-BMS and MD-BMED power meters reside within the existing Siemens APOGEE BAS architecture, or other BAS architectures, using the inherent flexibility of this meter s communication capabilities that utilize either BACnet MS/TP or Modbus RTU (MD-BMS and MD- BMED) or that utilize Ethernet based BACnet IP or Modbus TCP (MD-BMED model only). SELLING ADVANTAGES RELIABLE INSTRUMENTS FOR PRECISE ENERGY MEASUREMENT Siemens MD series power meter models are sub-metering devices that provide fast and accurate consumption data necessary to understand and control electrical energy costs. These meters capture kwh/kw energy and demand data as well as virtually all relevant energy parameters for diagnostics and monitoring on three-phase or single-phase circuit installations. The MD meter s flexibility, size, and ease of use make them ideal tools for gathering detailed consumption information in commercial, industrial, government and retail environments. These meters costeffectively support LEED 4 building objectives where power meters are a pre-requisite for certification. With the new Revenue Grade current transformers, a higher accuracy of measurement is available within this metering system to promote use in demanding applications such as demand response, critical equipment energy monitoring (using energy usage signatures for predictive maintenance analysis), energy efficiency verification, energy cost allocation data or tenant submetering. FLEXIBLE PERFORMANCE ON SINGLE OR THREE-PHASE ELECTRICAL SERVICES Siemens MD power meters use direct connections to each phase of the voltage and various interchangeable CT options such as split-core current transformers or flexible Rogowski Coils (for large loads or large cables and busbars) to monitor the current on each phase. The accompanying CTs are internally shunted and have UL/ETL and CE mark certifications for intrinsically safe operation on energized conductors. The new revenue grade CTs are listed to the new UL2808 standard. Siemens MD-BMS and MD-BMED power meter models make over 80 total electrical measurements which are derived from the voltage and current inputs. Electrical load diagnostic parameters such as power factor and line frequency are captured in addition to energy and demand values. The meters are compact enough to be mounted inside electrical panels or alternatively externally in small electrical controls cabinets. FLEXIBLE BACNET OR MODBUS PROTOCOLS, USING RS-485 or ETHERNET The MD-BMS meters use either the BACnet MS/TP (default) or Modbus RTU protocol for providing metrics over a RS-485 communication bus. Up to 20+ meters may be connected to a single RS485 network for monitoring and recording power usage at multiple locations within a single site, more if network traffic to the BAS is well managed. These meters are characterized as a 1/8 load in a RS-485 environment and are a BACnet Testing Labs certified smart sensor (B-SS) device for confidence in communications integrity. The MD-BMED meter adds Ethernet capability along with the above RS-485 capability. It supports BACnet IP or Modbus TCP via the side mounted Ethernet jack. IDEAL FOR FOOL-PROOF INSTALLATION Siemens MD-BMS and MD-BMED power meters require no external power and its power input can accommodate service voltages ranging from 60-600V (phase- tophase). Three LEDs on the meter provide visual verification of proper CT to phase installation. The meter verifies and provides phase checking for CT orientation greatly reducing set-up time and reducing errors. A new USB port makes setup and configuration easy with a laptop and the free ViewPoint software! CERTIFICATIONS AND WARRANTY The MD series carries UL, UL-C and CSA listings, including CE mark. Fast installation MD series power meters are compact, easily installed and can be positioned either inside or outside of an electrical panel. The orderable kits are pre-configured to the Current Transformer (CT) ordered, reducing installation time. Low cost Powerful features, industry leading technology, competitive pricing and fast installation makes the MD power meters one of the best power/energy metering values of its kind. The meter derives its own power from 80-600 Vac within the electrical panel, no external power supplies or transformers are needed. Advanced technology The MD power metering models use split-core, low-voltage signal CTs, which are inherently safer than ampsignal CTs and have high linearity at low loads. The meters use direct connections to each voltage main phase and uses various interchangeable CT options, such as split-core CTs or flexible Rogowski coils (for large loads or large cables and bus bars) to monitor current on each phase. All of Siemens current transformers are internally shunted for intrinsically safe operation on energized conductor. No shorting blocks are required. Revenue Grade POWER METERING EVOLUTION The new availability of these MD-BMS Revenue Grade power metering bundled kits is intended to provide higher measurement accuracy options for the Siemens MD series Power Metering line while maintaining the factory configuration advantage that comes with purchasing a bundled metering kit. The power meters used with these new Revenue Grade MD-BMS power meter kits are the same as existing MD-BMS and MD-BMED meters; making it possible to upgrade measurement accuracy of your installed applications by merely changing the current transducers. The only meter change would be to update the meter s configuration parameters for the new CTs by using the free ViewPoint software and a USB connection from the meter to your laptop computer! It takes just minutes to update the meter without powering down the meter to make the configuration change! In addition, this sales release provides individual meter and individual Revenue Grade Current Transformer part numbers and pricing, to support application upgrades. Additional styles and current ratings are available within the Revenue Grade CTs offering to supplement the most commonly used values that were used in creating the bundled metering kits. These new highly accurate CTs are offered in two styles: Hinged Split Core models in two sizes (easy to clamp around existing wiring). o Full scale current ranges of 5-Amps, 50-Amps, 100-Amps, 200-Amps and 400-Amps. Solid Core Toroidal CTs (small in size, optimized for use in breaker boxes, electrical panels). o Full scale current ranges of 5-Amps, 20-Amps, 50-Amps and 100-Amps. Comparing the new Revenue Grade power metering kits to the existing metering kits It provides the exact same 120+ measurement parameters as found on the existing MD-BMS series Revenue Grade bundled metering kits are available in 50A, 100A, 200A and 400A kits; these current ranges are targeted to the typical applications needing the higher accuracy metering. Rogowski Coil options are not available with these Revenue Grade accuracies. Nominal metering system accuracy is better than 1/2% (<0.5%) compared to the standard grade metering kits that provide metering system accuracies between 0.8 and 1.3%. Sales SALES OBJECTIVES AND SALES STRATEGY Our sales objective is to provide a complete line of highly capable and cost effective energy metering products to meet the growing demand for power and energy metering. ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2013 Addendum bh was released in 2013 and now requires submetering devices for measuring energy consumption and power demand. This meter meets that requirement. With LEED 4.0 standards, energy metering has moved out of the fine print to where the LEED certification now states that Energy Metering is a pre-requisite to achieving LEED building certification. The need to provide ongoing energy usage information is also a key to many government and state building energy reduction goals that are evolving. This meter meets that requirement. High measurement accuracies will be needed to support evolving cost allocation and tenant submetering applications. Critical environments require more demanding electrical measurements to support predictive maintenance objectives. This meter meets these requirements. As we all know, If you want to improve a process, you have to measure it. Our strategy is to enhance our offer with the required power metering solutions to meet commonly found applications. SALES CHANNELS The Siemens MD-BMS and MD-BMED power meter models, as well as all components and accessories, will be available to all sales channels that accept existing listings and certifications for their local market. Market and Competitor Data Veris Industries Veris Industries (a Schneider Electric company) offers several lines of networked power meters. For single circuit measurement, their H8036 (Mod-bus) line is a closest comparison to the Siemens meter. Drawbacks to the H8036 devices, as compared to the Siemens product, are as follows: Product is Modbus communicating only. Siemens MD-BMS is BACnet or Modbus selectable and the MD-BMED adds Ethernet capability utilizing BACnet IP or Modbus TCP. It can only measure up to 2400 Amp service, vs. 4000 Amps with MD-BMS with Rogowski Coils The H8036 supports the measurement of 26 electrical parameters. The MD series has over 120. CT hardware solution does not offer installation flexibility for larger, multiple conductor sizes Requires stocking several separate products (7 different models) to measure current over a wide range of service Requires separate, additional hardware (potential transformers) for measurement above 480 Vac Slow communication speed (9600 baud) vs. Siemens MD Model, which communicates to 115.2 Kbps Finally, there is no high accuracy option to compete with the Revenue Grade MD series meters. Veris also offers a BACnet communicating product, in their E50xx type models with the ability to measure 43 electrical parameters still less than the MD series. These devices have data-logging and display capabilities, but they are significantly more expensive than the Siemens MD Model. The E50xx models are not available with current transducers which must be purchased separately. Continental Control Systems (CCS) Offers the WattNode AC Power and Energy Meters. Available products include networked BACnet and Modbus versions with bidirectional power, energy, demand meters and pulse-output watt-hour transducers. Drawbacks to this device, as compared to the Siemens product, are as follows: Does not offer a meter/ct bundle. Requires the separate purchase and configuration of current transformers for the type of service needed (single phase, three-phase, and so on). Electro Industries Offers the Shark 100S and 200S electrical sub-meters. These devices have the following features versus the Siemens MD-BMS power meter: Does not offer a meter/ct bundle. Requires the separate purchase and configuration of current transformers for the type of service needed (single phase, three-phase, and so on). For wired models, only Mod-bus (RTU) is available; not offered as a BACnet communicating device. Requires a separate power supply. Does not offer Rogowski coils for applications with large buss bars. Meter does not accept the 333 mv standard for current transformers. No LEDs or other indicators for diagnosing current transformer connection/operation. Overall more expensive solution than Siemens MD-BMS power meter. Setra Offers the Power Patrol power meters and a line of separate CT s. Setra is new to the energy metering market; being primarily a pressure sensor supplier of high regard. Meters and CTs would need to be ordered separately then setup in the field. The MD-BMS power metering kits come bundled with CTs and are factory pre-configured for lower installation costs. There are no high accuracy CTs at the time of this release. Meters not evaluated with Siemens BMS products. Others There are several other energy meter manufacturers (such as Honeywell s E-Mon meter line), which provide an end-to-end power meter solution. These solutions are positioned up market and therefore do not generally compete directly with the Siemens meter solution bundles being released. These solutions: Require the installation of a separate meter panel, which add cost and labor Typically are more expensive as an end to end solution, and will not be effective in competing on projects where a lower cost solution is essential Accessories Mounting & Supplemental Fusing Protection This mounting rail and fuse block assembly provides supplementary protection between the three phase mains voltages leads and the MD series Power Meter. This can be used in lieu of the circuit breakers described in the MD series Power Meter User Manual (part number 125-202 is for meters with BACnet or Modbus communications protocol). The accessory kit comes with a 12 DIN rail, mounting screws, four (4) fuse blocks with 250mA fuses installed (for L1, L2, L3, N) and a bag of replacement fuses. Four 14ga wires are pre-installed to the fuse block for fast wiring to the meter. External NEMA1 UL Enclosures (Control Panel) Two new cabinets (enclosures) are available to hold one or two MD series Power Meters and optional MD Meter Mounting and Fuse Protection modules. These 12 H x 14 W x 3½ D meter-size enclosures are also useful for remote installation of many types of electronic gear due to their NEMA1 rating and the UL508 and CSA listings.
