Quick coupler The optional Volvo hydraulic quick coupler makes it possible to change buckets and tools quickly and easily. To change buckets or tools, two switches have to be activated simultaneously from the cab. The Volvo quick coupler increases the utilization and flexibility of these size machines even more. A lifting hook is welded onto the quick coupler. Cylinders Volvo excavators are equipped with cylinders which have long strokes and internal cushioning for smooth operation and long life. The bucket cylinder provides excellent bucket rotational angles for good material retention and dumping capabilities. The hydraulic cylinders will permit good operation in a variety of jobsite conditions. Lubrication points Remote greasing points for the boom and arm are grouped together on the boom base area and side of the arm for excellent serviceability. All lubrication points are well protected, with bucket pins double sealed. All mounting pins are chrome plated for better lubrication retention and long life. Excellent serviceability for long service life. Many attachments combinations A wide variety of booms and arms provide options for almost every need and application. The optional hydraulic quick coupler enables the operator to easily and safely switch between different buckets or tools.
Arm priority The main control valve contains an arm priority valve to direct pump flow to the arm circuit automatically when required by the operator. This allows for increased speed when performing leveling or dumping operations. This feature controls pump flow to the arm circuit automatically when needed by the operator. Boom priority The main control valve is equipped with a boom priority valve which directs more pump flow to the boom circuit for faster raise speeds when needed automatically, based on the operators requirements. This feature allows for faster boom raise speed automaticaly when needed by the operator. Mid-section The car body frame is "X" shaped to provide a natural flow of forces from the swing bearing to the track frames. The underside of the frame is covered with a steel plate to protect the hydraulic hoses and the swivel joint. This design will provide long life of the lower frame and components. A heavy duty steel cover plate is available as an option. Track pins and bushings The track pins and bushings of the undercarriage are greased and sealed to reduce travel noise and extend track life, adding even more value to the excavator. Long undercarriage life in a variety of soil and terrain conditions.
Track guards Track guards guide the track chain between the flanges of the bottom rollers when the undercarriage is turned or counter-rotated on uneven terrain. This prevents unnecessary wear on the track links and bottom rollers. The risk of derailing is also minimized. Track guards permit operation in rough jobsite condition and increase track chain life. Tracks The track chains are speciallly designed for excavators. The track shoes have triple grousers and cleaning holes so that the drive sprockets can press out any soft material that enters the chain. The track shoe width can vary between 600, 24" and 900, 36 " mm. Swamp and rubber pad shoes are also available. Excellent versatility for all jobsite conditions. Servicability Large and easy to open side doors and hood, are provided with locks. Pressure check points, with quick connect fittings, are grouped together for quick and easy pressure checks. The battery box is conveniently located for easy service of the batteries. Good serviceability means less maintenance cost and improved reliability. High quality hydraulic pumps The engine drives two, tandem mounted, variable displacement axial piston pumps. The hydraulic pumps are supplied from a major vendor that also supplies pumps to many other manufacturers of hydraulic excavators. The hydraulic pumps are a high quality design and very reliable.
Pressure relief system The accumulator maintains pilot pressure for a short time if there is an engine or pilot pump failure so the operator can lower the attachment to the ground. Another benefit of the accumulator is that it is easier to relieve pressure in the hydraulic lines to the cylinders for servicing. This provides improved serviceablity. Well-matched engine The engine and hydraulic system are so well matched that it is virtually only during high prodution loading or trenching that the engine has to be run at full speed. In many jobsite applications, the operator can choose a lower rpm, which provides lower fuel consumption, longer life and reduced noise levels Low-emission engine The Tier 2 low emission engine burns the fuel efficiently, reducing harmful waste products to a minimum without sacrificing power. The engine complies with federal EPA emission requirements in the USA, as well as with California off-road 1996 laws. Filtering system The multi stage filtering system enhances the durability and reliability of the major hydraulic components by reducing oil contamination. The main return filter is a 10 micron design and the pump suction is protected by a suction strainer in the tank. This provides long service life of hydraulic pumps, motors and valves.
Cold weather start-up aids Cold weather start-up aids include an electric air intake heater as standard, with a fuel warmer, block heater and an oil pan heater available as options. These items will provide good engine start-up in extremely cold weather. Engine life will also be improved. Main control valve The main valve assembly has two sections. One section provides left travel, arm, extra equipment and swing. It gets its oil flow from P1 pump. The other uses the oil flow from P2 pump and supplies right travel, bucket and boom functions. This design allows for straight travel and multi-function operations while traveling. 3-stage air cleaner The engine air cleaning system is done in three stages. The first stage is a standard Turbo-Two type pre-cleaner that removes heavy particles. Then the air is filtered by a primary and secondary, or safety filter. A warning lamp indicates when the filters need serviced. The air cleaner filters are ground level serviceable for ease of maintenance. Swing bearing The swing bearing turret is welded to both the top and bottom plates of the frame, providing a smooth distribution of forces between the swing bearing and the undercarriage. The swing bearing is bolted to a steel ring at the top of the turret. The swing bearing is greased from 3 lube points on the front side, which are easily accessible from the ground.
Fast and strong swing system The planetary type swing reduction unit provides high swing torque's. Special shockless valves assure that swing stops and starts are smooth and fast. The swing holding brake is used to hold the superstructure during work and transport. The swing system wil provide a long and reliable service life. Swing priority When the arm is moved to its inner position, the arm regeneration valve is activated so that the return oil flow from the arm cylinder rod side can be reused on the arm cylinder piston side. This allows a high percentage of pump oil flow to the swing circuit for a faster swing movement. Overall swing cycle times are reduced for a faster total cycle time. Holding valves Standard boom and arm holding valves minimize cylinder drift when lifting or waiting to load a truck. The holding valves are mounted within the main control valve for improved reliability. Smoother operation and improved lifting characteristics. Visibility Good visibility and comfort are essential in an excavator. The upper windshield can be pulled up and stored, while the lower window can be stored behind the seat. The rear window can be slid open for operator comfort. The openable tinted roof hatch, provides additional overhead visibility. Good visibility and operator comfort increase operator productivity.
Air conditioning/heating system The standard cab features an integrated air conditioning and heating system. The airflow is delivered via eight ducts for cooling, heating and ventilation. The filtered and pressurized ventilation system reduces the entry of dust and dirt particles from the outside. Operator comfort, and therefore efficiency, is improved with this system. Hydraulic dampening cab mounts The cab is mounted on and supported by five strategically positioned silicon oil and rubber viscous dampening mounts. These mounts significantly reduce shock, vibration and noise transmitted to the cab, which lowers operator stress and fatigue. Operators are more productive and more efficient. Adjustable operator seat and control consoles The adjustable seat and control consoles move independently to accommodate any size operator. The standard heated seat has eight different adjustments, suspension and a seat belt. The seat is equipped with wide armrests, individually adjusted to meet various operator requirements. Low noise design High performance sound absorption material, installed in the cab, engine and pump compartments, has significantly reduced noise levels. This is an environmentally friendly machine, particularly suited to urban job sites and night operation. Operation in city and urban areas causes no noise problems with neighbors.
Monitoring system The adjustable monitor and instrument panel provides full monitoring capabilities including gauges, warning lamps and machine operating conditions. It is located in the front right area of the cab for good operator visibility. The operator instantly knows the operating conditions of the excavators major systems. One touch power boost The power boost switch, located on the right hand joystick increases the breakout forces by 10%, in Power Max, H, and G modes. This allows operators to power through obstacles, such as hard digging conditions or tree roots when needed. Machine display unit The engine, hydraulic system and their sensors are constantly monitored by this system. The operating mode is displayed when all is normal and fault codes are displayed when there is a problem. This system provides simplified troubleshooting and diagnostics for the technician. Emergency engine speed control system In the event of a controller failure, the Volvo excavator is equipped with a manual throttle control and computer bypass system to minimize lost production time. This feature allows customers to maintain operation until the dealer technician can remedy the situation.
Contronics Contronics with Advanced Mode control system balances engine power with hydraulic pump output over a wide range of working conditions to provide maximum production and minimal fuel consumption. The integrated mode selection switch automatically sets the engine power and work mode for optimum machine performance. Automatic idling system The automatic idling system lowers the engine rpm to idle 5 seconds after stopping work, which reduces fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and noise. Jobsite condtions are improved with this system. Strong boom and arm The Volvo excavator booms and arms have been designed and tested for actual jobsite conditions. Hammer/Shear and quick coupler piping are standard features, factory installed. Mounting blocks for additional piping are pre-installed at the factory. Designed and tested for long life.
