The Licensed Certifier must specifically address the cnstructin, dimensin, mass and peratinal standards that are set ut in these perating cnditins and the relevant Australian Design Rules (ADRs). A cpy f the certificatin must be prvided with the applicatin fr a permit. NHVAS Accreditatin The vehicle peratr and the vehicle must be accredited under the Natinal Heavy Vehicle Accreditatin Scheme (NHVAS) Maintenance and Mass Management Accreditatin mdules, in accrdance with the business rules f each mdule. Maximum dimensin limits External dimensins A B-Triple r AB-Triple cmbinatin, when laden r unladen, must nt be mre than: 36.5 metres lng (including bullbar and ther after-market fittings); 4.3 metres high r up t 4.6 metres high if cmplying with the current 4.6 Metre High Vehicle Rute Ntice; r 2.5 metres wide. Internal dimensins Kingpin-t-rear dimensin The distance frm centreline f the king-pin f the first trailer t the rear f the cmbinatin must nt exceed 31.6 metres. Drawbar Fr an AB-Triple the draw bar length must be mre than 3 metres and n mre than 5 metres. Nte: B-Triples d nt have draw bars Maximum deck length - cmbinatins transprting livestck The maximum deck length fr a B-Triple r AB-Triple transprting livestck is 28.2 metres, which is defined as the ttal deck space fr lading livestck, between external walls f the stck crates, excluding any prvisins f pens. Cmpliance with Australian Design Rule (ADR) 43 dimensins Each cmpnent vehicle f a B-Triple r AB-Triple must cmply, in its wn right, with the requirements f Third Editin Australian Design Rule (ADR) 43. A semi-trailer perated under the current Class 3 Semi-trailer Exemptin Ntice, cannt be perated as part f B-Triple r AB-Triple.
Maximum limits fr axles and axle grups The maximum axle mass limits fr a B-Triple r AB-Triple is the lesser f: The mass limits in Table 1; r the manufacturer s mass ratings, r The sum f the mass limits fr the tyres fitted t the axles and axle grups. Table 1 - Mass limits fr single axles and axle grups Descriptin f single axle r axle grup General Mass Limit (tnnes) Cncessinal Mass Limit (tnnes) Higher Mass Limits (tnnes) STEER AXLE Single steer axle Single steer axle 6.0* 6.0* 6.0* NON-STEER AXLE GROUPS Single axles and single axle grups Single axle r single axle grup fitted with fur (4) tyres Tandem axle grups 9.0 9.0 9.0 Tandem axle grup fitted with eight (8) tyres 16.5 17.0 17.0 Tri-axle grups Tri-axle grup fitted with twelve (12) tyres. 20.0 21.0 22.5 * - 6.5 tnnes fr a prime mver (with a GVM f 15 tnnes r mre) cmplying with the Frnt Under-run Prtectin Systems (FUPS), Cabin Strength and ADR 80/01 standards. Maximum grss mass limits B-Triple The grss mass f a B-Triple must nt exceed the lwest f: 82.5 tnnes (GML), 84.5 tnnes (CML), 90.5 tnnes (HML). The sum f the axle and axle grups mass. The sum f the manufacturers mass limits fr the prime mver (GVM) and the semi trailers (Grss Trailer Mass), r The grss cmbinatin mass (GCM) limit specified by the prime mver manufacturer. AB-Triple The grss mass limit fr an AB-Triple must nt exceed the lwest f: 102.5 tnnes (GML), 104.5 tnnes (CML), 113 tnnes (HML). The sum f the axle and axle grups mass.
The sum f the manufacturers mass limits fr the prime mver (GVM) and the semi trailers (Grss Trailer Mass), r The grss cmbinatin mass (GCM) limit specified by the prime mver manufacturer. Mass limits relating t axle spacing Fr any B-Triple r AB-Triple, the sum f the axle lads f the axles in any tw adjacent axle grups (r f any single axle and the axles in an adjacent axle grups) must nt exceed that calculated in accrdance with the frmula ppsite. M = 3L + 12.5 where M is the mass limit in tnnes, and L is the distance in metres Suspensin requirements and tyre cnfiguratin Rad-friendly air suspensin certified in accrdance with Vehicle Standards Bulletin 11 and dual tyre axles (4 tyres per axle) must be fitted t all axle grups f B-Triple and AB-Triple trailers. This requirement des nt apply t the steer axle f the prime mver. Cmpliance with standards All cmpnent vehicles f a B-Triple r AB-Triple cmbinatin must cmply with the applicable requirements f Schedule 2 f the Vehicle Registratin Regulatin 2007. The prime mver f the cmbinatin must cmply with ADR 64 Heavy Gds Vehicles Designed fr Use in Rad Trains and B-Dubles and each trailer f the cmbinatin must cmply with ADR63 Trailers Designed fr Use in Rad Trains. Prime mver pwer requirements The minimum pwer required f a B-Triple r AB-Triple hauling unit must be capable, when perating at the manufacturer s nminated Grss Cmbinatin Mass (GCM), f: Starting mvement n a 10% gradient; and A gradeability f 12%; and Maintaining a cnstant speed f 70km/h n a 1% gradient. Braking requirements The fllwing braking requirements apply in additin t the braking system requirements that apply t all heavy vehicles. A prime mver used in a B-Triple r AB-Triple cmbinatin must have an anti-lck brake system that cmplies with Australian Design Rules 64. A semi-trailer, regardless f its date f manufacture, must have an anti-lck braking system that meets the requirements f ADR 38, if: It is being used in a B-Triple r AB-Triple that includes a rad tank vehicle, whether r nt the semi-trailer is itself a rad tank vehicle, and The rad tank vehicle carries dangerus gds.
Otherwise, the B-Triple r AB-Triple cmbinatin must cmply with the requirements f Part 6 Divisin 4 Additinal brake requirements fr B-Dubles and lng rad trains f the Rad Transprt (Vehicle Registratin) Regulatin 2007 Cupling Requirements A B-Triple r AB-Triple must have a minimum D-rating f 162kN fr all kingpins, fifth wheel cuplings, autmatic pin cuplings and 186kN fr a drawbar-type cupling r drawbar eye (where applicable).
