Controls ata Sequence of Operation efore start-up, check the unit for obstructive packaging, objects near or in blowers, dampers, enthalpy wheel, etc. Once installation is complete, check all modes of operation to ensure that the unit is working properly. Close the doors and check for operation in all modes. Ventilation Control Venmar CES has a remote wall controller that is compatible with the unit control box for outdoor models. Power connected, no ventilation call. oth fans are off, frost control damper (if equipped) closes off fresh air from outside. External hood dampers (if equipped) are closed. Power connected, low speed call (if equipped). oth fans are on low speed, internal frost control damper (if equipped) closes recirculation opening. External hood dampers (if equipped) are open. If unit is single speed, it will come on that speed on a call for low or high. Power connected, high speed call. oth fans on high speed, frost control damper (if equipped) closes recirculation opening. External hood dampers (if equipped) are open. If unit is single speed, it will come on that speed on a call for low or high. Occupied Timer/Sensor Power connected, occupied timer/sensor connection open (unoccupied mode). oth fans are off, frost control damper (if equipped) opens recirculation opening. External hood dampers (if equipped) are closed. Free Cooling Power connected, enthalpy control contacts closed, unit ventilating. The wheel stops rotating, fans stay on set speed, frost control damper (if equipped) is closed. Fan Interlock When connecting the energy recovery ventilators to the existing ductwork system of an air handler, typically the air handler should be running whenever the ventilator is running. To achieve this combination there is a set of contacts in the control box which close when the ventilator is running. ERV Control Wiring low voltage remote control wiring interface is provided on the outdoor units. The connections are made through the bottom panel, roofcurb and roof opening. The low voltage remote wiring terminal is located inside the unit on the control box. Installer must provide wiring for the optional controls that may be supplied. ll field installed low voltage wiring must be Class II. Remote Wall Control Optional wall control requires 18 gauge wires (or equivalent). This remote wall control runs on 24 VC. Low Voltage Control ll other terminals are 24 VC or dry contact control. Low voltage terminal control consists of the following: Occupied Timer/Sensor 24 VC, needs dry contact to operate. Remote Fan Control (control wiring option) 24 VC, requires single pole, double throw switch. irty Filter Sensor Makes dry contact. Low Temperature Control (control wiring option) Makes dry contact. Wheel Rotation Sensor Makes dry contact. CO 2 Ventilation Control (control wiring option) Makes dry contact. Unoccupied Recirc Contacts Makes dry contact. Smoke etector (control wiring option) Makes dry contact. The remote wall controls work with the integrated controls within the unit to control the ventilation sequence. Without the wall control, fans can be operated with the dry contacts or a switch. Page 22

Controls ata Occupied Timer/Sensor Occupancy control is achieved by connection to a terminal provided either in the unit control box or the wall remote panel. This terminal requires a dry contact which could be provided by various controls such as a timer, occupancy sensor, building management system or other. Enthalpy Control Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) can be controlled by an enthalpy controller that switches between free cooling and /C unit cooling. When free cooling is possible, the ERV will ventilate without energy recovery (the enthalpy wheel stops) on a call for cooling. The ventilation rate is not affected. rybulb temperature free cooling is achieved by reading the outside air temperature and setting the thermostat for the range of temperature where free cooling is required (factory set between 68 F and 80 F [20 C and 27 C]). Setpoint enthalpy control free cooling is achieved by using an enthalpy controller reading the outside air temperature and humidity (this setpoint is field adjustable). Remote Fan Control Remote fan control can be achieved by connecting dry contact controls to the terminal interface provided in the unit control box. These controls can be the following: CO 2 sensor, timer, building management system, SPT switch, etc. irty Filter Sensor ERVs can be equipped with dirty filter sensors which monitor the pressure across the filters and close the contacts when the filters become restricted with dirt. Venmar CES provides an alarm light to signal dirty filters on unit control box or wall remote panel. CO 2 Ventilation Control ERVs can be controlled by a CO 2 controller that dictates fan speed based on CO 2 levels. s CO 2 levels increase, fan speed is raised for increased ventilation. Wheel Rotation Sensor ERVs can be equipped with a wheel rotation sensor option. If the wheel rotation stops (unless in enthalpy state, defrost mode or unoccupied condition), an alarm signal will be activated. The alarm is used to turn on an alarm light installed in the control box or the remote wall panel. The wheel rotation sensor board has jumpers that can be used to set the time duration (1, 2, 4 or 8 minutes) for the alarm to be activated after wheel failure occurs. Unoccupied Recirc Contacts On recirc defrost units, an unoccupied recirc control can be achieved by connection to the terminal provided in the control box. These terminals require a dry contact which could be provided by a timer, thermostat or other. Closure of these terminals will cause the unit to go into a 'recirc mode' where the supply fan runs on high speed and the exhaust fan stops. Smoke etector ERVs can be equipped with a duct-mount smoke detector which will monitor the air when passing through the duct system into the ERV. When sufficient smoke is detected, an alarm condition is activated and will open the auxiliary contact to stop operation of the ERV. The smoke detector should be located in a normally occupied area of premises. It is recommended for compliance to IMC Code 606 and NFP-90. Page 23

Options Frost Control Recirculation efrost Recirculation defrost is a temperature initiated time-based cycle which will de-energize the exhaust fan and the wheel drive motor, close the outdoor air damper and circulate return air through both sides of the wheel. If recirculation defrost is in operation, it will recirculate approximately 15% of the time, only when the outdoor air temperature falls below 15 F [-9 C]. Please note that if the indoor relative humidity is expected to be 30% or less, please contact the factory as frost control may not be required at all. Exhaust Only efrost Exhaust only defrost is a temperature initiated time-based cycle which will de-energize the supply fan, close the outdoor air damper and exhaust return air through the exhaust side of the wheel as it continues to rotate. If exhaust only defrost is in operation, the supply fan will be shut off approximately 15% of the time, only when the outdoor air temperature falls below 15 F [-9 C]. Please note that if the indoor relative humidity is expected to be 30% or less, please contact the factory as frost control may not be required at all. Recirculation and Exhaust Only efrost Table efrost/ventilation ERV Type of Initiation (Minutes) Model Stage efrost Temperature efrost Time/Run Time 5000 to 1 E 15 F -9 C 12/30 10000 2 E -5 F -21 C 12/12 5000 to 1 R 15 F -9 C 12/30 10000 2 R -5 F -21 C 12/12 Legend: R - Recirculation E - Exhaust Only Variable Speed rive (VS) Frost Prevention Variable speed frost prevention is based on an exhaust air temperature and is controlled by a C controller. If this temperature reaches the factory setpoint of 33 F [1 C] (adjustable), the frost control cycle begins. The controller modulates the total energy wheel rotation speed to maintain the exhaust air temperature above its setpoint and prevent frost formation on the enthalpy wheel. Contact the factory for the relation between the wheel effectiveness and wheel rotation speed. Motors, Voltage and Speeds Venmar CES standard HP motors meet the Energy Policy ct (EPCT) of the United States and Canada's Energy Efficiency Regulation (EER). ll ERVs have numerous voltage options to choose from. See the Physical ata - Nomenclature Options chart on page 3 for specific voltage availability. Standard belt driven units come in one speed. s an option for the ERV units, Venmar CES offers Variable Frequency rives (VFs) to allow variable speeds for either the supply or exhaust motors (3 phase voltage only). The VF is keypad programmable and therefore allows the user to change the desired motor speeds or use custom settings and preferences. Standard in all VFs are wiring terminals that enable VF circuit and operation control by field wired relays, sensors or external devices. 0-10 volt control signal for the VFs is provided by others in the field. To guarantee that the user will have accurate and individual motor control, each motor has a separate VF on the applicable circuit. lso, for 575 volt, line reactors are installed to protect the VF and motor. irty Filter Sensor The dirty filter sensor option will monitor the pressure across the filters and will close contacts when dirt restricts the airflow to the setpoint. The connections at the external terminal interface will close and can be used to control a remote light or alarm to signal dirty filters. The sensor has the following features: Pressure setpoint is factory set (adjustable). Polyester film diaphragm responds to pressure changes as low as 2.5mm WC. Equipped with male quick connect terminals. Wheel Rotation Sensor The wheel rotation sensor is optional. If the wheel stops rotating for any reason, the dry contacts on the sensor will close. These contacts can be wired to a light, an alarm or building management system. See wiring diagram on unit control box cover for sensor contact location. Filtration Venmar CES uses only the highest quality disposable Medium Efficiency Filters (MEF) with 35% ust Spot Efficiency (SE) as the standard option. Venmar CES also offers a high efficiency filter with an 80-85% SE rating. When using MEF filtration for both airstreams of the enthalpy wheel, a clean functional wheel with no reduction in wheel performance is ensured. Venmar CES recommends MEF filtration with all ERVs for optimum wheel performance. The following pressure drops are to be added to the ESP if high efficiency filters are specified. irflow Pressure rop Model (cfm) (in. wg.) 4000 0.47 ERV5000 4500 0.53 5000 0.60 5500 0.67 5000 0.44 ERV6500 6000 0.53 7000 0.62 6000 0.38 7000 0.44 ERV8000 8000 0.50 9000 0.57 8000 0.47 9000 0.53 ERV10000 10000 0.60 11500 0.71 Enthalpy Control - Free Cooling ERV units can be controlled by an enthalpy controller that switches between free cooling and /C unit cooling. When free cooling is possible, the ERV will ventilate without energy recovery (the enthalpy wheel stops) on a call for cooling. The ventilation rate is not affected. If the unit is not operating, enthalpy control contact will initiate low speed ventilation. The enthalpy control must be connected in conjunction with a cooling thermostat control to prevent free cooling from initiating in heating seasons. Enthalpy options can be temperature, setpoint enthalpy or differential enthalpy controlled. Enthalpy control options are factory mounted to the control terminals on the energy recovery ventilator. If the unit is ventilating, the enthalpy wheel will stop rotating upon control contact closure. Page 25

Temperature Controller (rybulb Setpoint) This simple temperature controller is used to free cool based on sensible energy alone. This controller has the following features: djustable differential setting: 3 F to 10 F [1.7 C to 5.6 C]. Operating scale range: 0 F to 100 F [-18 C to 38 C]. mbient temperature compensated. Solid State Enthalpy Controller (Setpoint Enthalpy) This controller maximizes the use of free outdoor air in place of the first stage of cooling in HVC economizer systems. It has the following features: Provides accurate solid state enthalpy change over control. Enthalpy setpoint (,,C,) is used to select combination of air temperature and humidity that is suitable for free cooling. Solid State Enthalpy Sensor (ifferential Enthalpy) For differential enthalpy control, a separate solid state enthalpy sensor is required along with the solid state enthalpy controller. The enthalpy controller monitors the outdoor air enthalpy and the enthalpy sensor monitors the return air enthalpy. The differential between the two airstreams is used as the primary condition for controlling the free cooling operation of the unit. This enthalpy sensor has the following features: Senses and combines temperature and humidity of outdoor air. Long lasting solid state sensing element is accurate and stable over time. lower Isolation ll fan packages are isolated for smooth and vibration-free operation. This type of operation helps to keep noise levels at a minimum. ll fractional HP and nominal HP fan packages use rubber isolation as the standard base option. Spring vibration isolators (1" [25mm] deflection) are also available. Purge Section Venmar CES offers an adjustable purge section for the ERVs. The purge section is adjustable but is factory set based on pressure differential. If you have to field adjust the purge, simply loosen the two set screws, pivot the purge to the desired angle and re-fasten the set screws.
