Advanced batteries for railways A full capability for multiple needs February 2009

Battery expertise Uncompromised quality for railway networks Experience founded in industry... Saft is a results-driven, world class manufacturer of advanced, high end batteries for major international industries. More applications need powerful back-up and guaranteed performance. Saft s expertise, innovative design and worldwide manufacturing base provide an all-round, single-source solution....tailored for railways, globally Saft has over 100 years of proven performance in rail markets. Today, as a battery systems OEM, we offer: expertise in multiple technologies, experience in rail system management, a single source for integrated battery systems, dedicated project management teams, power solutions meeting all relevant safety and operation standards. Saft s culture has always been one of continuous improvement. IRIS simply reflects the company s established excellence in the entire battery system supply process. Saft s offer includes servicing, technical expertise, consulting and training in support of every railway application. Photo: Jean Isenmann Be sure, with Saft As part of its commitment to the Saft World Class program, the company pledges at every tier to meet standards of excellence which enable it to satisfy completely customers precise requirements. Saft harnesses suitable resources, implements innovative solutions, follows programs of continuous personal and product improvement, and applies technological expertise to meet clearly defined goals. Very close customer involvement during the design, development and manufacture of battery systems promotes rapid project progress and cost-efficiency. 2 Saft s worldwide network of recycling collection points exists to support customers compliance with their legal and environmental obligations. A duty of care for the environment Saft batteries represent the best solution for the complex and demanding operating requirements of today s railway rolling stock whilst minimising impact on the environment. All energy consumed in commissioning a Saft battery - including the sourcing of raw material, the manufacture and transport to the site of operation and its recycling - has been critically analysed and controlled as part of an on-going commitment to sound environmental management.

Saft Ni-Cd Low Life Cycle Cost over 30 years... Battery purchases Battery cost includes acquisition and, with Saft sintered/pbe Ni-Cd, only one replacement over 30 years. Lead acid batteries with between 3 5 years life would be replaced at least 5 times during the equivalent period, incurring collateral costs for transport and administration and risking breakdowns in shipment, delivery and maintenance schedules. Maintenance Battery maintenance costs include preventive and corrective procedures. For Saft sintered/pbe Ni-Cd, only 1 topping-up is required every 2 years, meaning less maintenance and fewer replacements. In addition to requiring topping-up every 2 6 months, lead acid s poor reliability demands repeated corrective maintenance, directly increasing expenditure, unscheduled operations and pressure on stock availability for replacements. Failure risk Ni-Cd electrochemistry ensures total reliability, even in punishing operating conditions. Conversely, the unpredictable behaviour of lead acid can result in sudden death and zero volt output. With neither energy nor power back-up, trains cannot operate. Saft Ni-Cd ensures continuous service avoiding unscheduled delays, increased maintenance and reduced revenue. Operation cost Because Saft Ni-Cd systems are light and compact they require less energy to be moved than a lead acid battery. The low operation costs for a mobile Ni-Cd system are reflected in its minimised environmental impact. The weight saved can be used directly to carry more passengers....with low environmental impact: Saft technology is an inherently very low LCC solution. As a direct consequence of this, Saft batteries have only a minimal impact on the environment. Light - reduces on-board weight, which reduces energy consumption. Long duration life - one replacement over 30 years minimises all material and energy consumption over the entire supply chain. High reliability and low maintenance - reduces scheduled and unscheduled energy consumption related to maintenance operations. 3

4 Saft technology Reliability without compromise Ni-Cd Sintered Plastic Bonded Electrode (S/PBE) Saft s entire range of Ni-Cd batteries meets all major international mechanical and electrical standards, including IEC 60623, UIC 854, IEC/EN 60077, IEC/EN 61373. More than 15 years operational life. Wide operating temperature window. Available in regular plastic, flame retardant plastic and metallic containers. Robust design tolerates fully the harsh conditions in railway environments. Outstanding chargeability: - over 90% capacity available after 5 hours at low charging voltage (1.45 V/cell), - oversizing minimised with smaller derating factor. Minimal maintenance solution: - very low water consumption, - long maintenance intervals, - very high reliability: as no components engage in electrochemical reactions, Ni-Cd cannot suffer from sudden death. Predictable ageing. Ni-MH Saft has wide experience in the design, manufacture and operation of Ni-MH batteries. This technology has already been deployed in many applications worldwide, notably in hybrid tramways operating autonomously in parts of historic town centres. 30% less weight and volume than conventional sintered/pbe Ni-Cd batteries. NHP modules deliver high peak power, ideal for traction applications. Maintenance-free: no topping-up required over life time. Sophisticated electronics management for traction applications. Ni-Cd Pocket plate Saft markets a wide range of Ferak brand pocket plate batteries. Available in regular plastic, flame retardant plastic and metallic single cell types. Mature, robust and reliable technology. A heritage of continuous product improvement. Three ranges are available with a wide discharge capability, from short duration diesel starting duties to long discharge profiles. This technology is also available in a low maintenance version (LM) with longer topping-up intervals and no need to change electrolyte.

5 Exceptionally wide range Enabling customised specification Saft s full range of advanced battery technologies and proven, worldwide Back-up SRM (25-440 Ah) The single cell design SRM supplies long discharges for on-board system back-up duties, safety and environmental control ideally suited to mass transit sub-surface and deep tunnel routes. Tolerates deep cycling and heavy vibration. Stainless steel, plastic and flame-retardant options. Lightweight and compact. MRX (70-520 Ah) MRX is a block design, delivering extended discharges for low voltage system back-up and peak discharges for emergency power on rail and mass transit systems for a wide range of on-board applications. 30% lighter than conventional Ni-Cd. Compact footprint enables direct replacement for lead acid. High performance at low temperature. Easy, minimal maintenance. 6 experience in rail applications enable precise requirements to be met. Starting Traction SRX (22-370 Ah) Single cell design SRX provides short duration, high peak discharges and also emergency power for critical on-board functions. Excellent cycling characteristics, retaining 90% of rated capacity at constant voltage [from -20ºC (-4ºF) to +45ºC (+113ºF)]. Tolerates harsh operating conditions. Low temperature operation. Strong, chemical and impact-resistant stainless steel or plastic containers. NHP (34-68 Ah) Saft s NHP range is a highly efficient new technology designed specifically for high power applications where high energy density with maintenance-free operation are central requirements. High specific power. High cycle life. Zero maintenance. Safe and resistant to abuse. Integrated, highly efficient water cooling system. Diesel engine starting Hybrid traction Regenerative braking High Speed/Very High Speed trains Diesel Multiple Units Diesel locomotives Hybrid tramways Other hybrid applications LOHR 2006
