Welcome, and thank you for coming! It is our pleasure to welcome you to the beautiful Pacific Northwest for the 2004 North American SAAB Owners Convention. We look forward to sharing our hospitality with you in the dramatic setting of Crystal Mountain Resort. The theme of this year's convention is "Celebrating the Independent Spirit of SAAB Owners and Drivers." In keeping with this theme, we have structured this year's event along simple lines, so as to give you plenty of time to "find your own road" and make new friendships and renew those which have been growing over the years. While there are plenty of seminars and group events to choose from, we hope you will agree that the heart of any SAAB convention, even more than the SAABs, is the people you meet and the friendships you make. This souvenir program will help you navigate the events and activities going on this weekend. It also provides a chance to recognize the many generous sponsors whose contributions have helped make this event possible. We hope you will choose to patronize them both during and after the convention. Take advantage of the beautiful greens and blues Washington has to offer while you re here. Saturday afternoon offers some time for a scenic drive to Mount Rainier or a chair lift ride half way up the mountain here at Crystal. Maps are available for either trip. If you opt to leave your car behind for the chair lift, it s about an hour s hike from the top of the ride to some stunning views at the summit. You can ride the chair roundtrip, or make the hike down, stopping at a sparkling mountain lake with your box lunch for a picnic. Back on the ground at the resort, take the time to test drive a new SAAB or go for a spin in a vintage SAAB. Shake hands with Erik Carlsson, catch a seminar with one of our great speakers and learn more about how these cars work from the inside out, test your car and your driving skills against the clock, and be sure to get in on the photo opportunities to show friends back home. If there s anything we can do to make the convention more enjoyable for you, just contact one of the convention staff wearing a blue Tshirt with the Independent Spirit design on it. Enjoy! On Friday, August 20, the autocross competition will be held in a closed parking lot at the convention site. Signup will be held onsite directly before the event, which is scheduled to begin at 2:00 For those of you who do not know what an autocross is, it is best described as a timed event where you run your SAAB through a marked course, striving for the fastest time possible. The course is marked with orange cones, and the cones describe the outside of the turns. The straight sections of the course are unmarked, but will be clearly in sight of the next set of cones, and hence the next turn. Cars will be run one at a time, and you race only the clock. A onesecond penalty will be given for every cone that you move out of its mark or knock over. A DNF will be given to any car getting two or more wheels outside the marked course. Your fastest time will determine your finishing order. Competition will be divided into classes as follows: Turbo Naturally Aspirated Vintage (Model 99 and earlier) Women Drivers All drivers must wear a helmet when driving in the autocross. If you bring your own helmet, make sure helmet is rated Snell 85 or higher. Loaner helmets will be available at the event. Each car will have to undergo a safety inspection by the event organizers including, but not limited to: No oil, water, or fuel leaks Battery secured Wiring in good condition Throttle springs safe and functioning properly No excessive grease accumulation Exhaust system leakfree and in good condition Ball joints in serviceable condition Shock absorbers in serviceable condition Wheel bearings tight Steering gear tight Acceptable tire condition (enough tread, no cord showing) Hub caps and wheel trims removed Tight lug nuts All loose objects removed from interior and trunk Adequate seat belts Brake pedal height and firmness Make sure helmet is rated Snell 85 or higher

SAAB 92X Introduction and Walkaround John Libbos Friday, August 20, 1:00, Crystal Mountain Chapel The new 92X Aero is the fastest car SAAB now sells. You ve heard about it, you ve read about it in the magazines, and now here is a chance to learn the inside story from SAAB Cars USA s own internal product manager John Libbos. In addition to the Walkaround, SAAB 92X s will be available for test drives throughout the weekend. Motor Oil All You Never Thought to Ask Stephen Goldberger Friday, August 20, 3:00, Crystal Mountain Chapel Saab Owners! car you want to drive. W ll help you enjoy driving For 22 years, the NMA (a pr SOC04 sponsor) ensure that you can travel where and you want, the way you want. We're the National Motorists Association. For more information call: Or visit our web site: www s.org In preparing for this presentation, Stephen wrote that his study of the subject was motivated by a letter he received from Spokane s own John Lippis challenging conventional wisdom on the subject. Seminar material is based on the articles in NINES #261 and #262 and information gleaned from Lubrizol Corporation s lubrizol.com. The talk will include current developments in the motor oil industry which could have an important impact on determining which oil is suitable for use in your SAAB. Before becoming publisher and editor of NINES magazine, Stephen worked as an engineer and business owner. With degrees in mechanical engineering and automatic controls, he specialized in noise and vibration control and machine design. He bought his first SAAB, a 99 4door, in the spring of 1977, after one of the three Simcas rusted in half. His second SAAB, a 99 5door, was purchased the following year when the remaining two Simcas proved too difficult to keep running. Since that time, his family has owned 900s and 9000s, and currently owns a 95 Aero SportWagon.

SAAB Collectibles and Memorabilia Bob McNary, Rudy Zweibel, and Andy Saksa Friday, August 20, 3:00, Bull Wheel Pub The Masters of arcane knowledge are back to wow and amaze you with their encyclopedic grasp of SAAB toys and accessories. They promise to display and discuss choice items from their own collections. They will also answer questions and help determine the value of your SAAB treasures. If it says SAAB on it, you can be sure Bob McNary not only knows what it is, but probably owns one, has owned one, or is planning to get one. Whether you are a potential buyer or seller, ebay auctions notwithstanding, Bob can tell you the true value of a piece. Much to his wife s dismay, Bob currently owns a Sonett #171, a GT750, and a V4 Monte Carlo. Rudy Zweibel is a passionate SAAB memorabilia collector, from scale models to posters, dealer signs to advertising banners. Rudy owns one of the largest collections of SAAB automobilia in the country, as well as a fleet of full size SAAB toys, ranging from a SAAB 93 to a modern 900. Modern SAAB Technology John Moss Friday, August 20, 4:00, Bull Wheel Pub John will bring along some 93 Sports Sedan electronic bits and information to lead us into the information age, SAAB style. At the risk of making light of the technology, you can quickly find yourself asking how many computers does it take to turn on a light bulb? Once you get past the philosophical why did they do that?, the how they did it is pretty darned entertaining. As always, the declared topic is really just a starting point, not a destination, and John can be counted on to ramble off in whatever direction the group wants to go. John Moss is SAAB s Senior Technical Trainer. He has worked for SAAB since 1968, when he was hired as a technician to work on the company s car fleet. A staple on the agenda at SAAB Owners Conventions, John is able to discuss in detail all of the latest SAAB technology, while simultaneously wearing the mantle of inhouse expert on vintage SAAB models.

SAAB Racing and Tuning Ed Abbott Saturday, August 21, 9:00 a.m., Crystal Mountain Chapel Founded in 1982, Abbott Racing started by racing high performance front wheel drive cars in England and Europe. Abbott Racing was approached by SAAB Great Britain in 1987 to develop their 900 8v Challenge Car for racing. Since that time, Abbott Racing has been synonymous with SAABs and racing success. The motorsport programme from 1987 to 1998 was funded directly by SAAB GB, major UK sponsors with SAAB AB, supplying material and financial support via SGB. In those 11 years of motorsports, Abbott raced SAABs in over 210 major Saloon Car races and accrued a nearly 100% finishing record. Abbott Racing s road car tuning business was a direct offshoot from the race car operation, and by 1994 half of the business was related to tuning. Today, a staff of ten is engaged in development, tuning, sales and maintenance of SAAB cars in what is now their 17th year of 100% SAAB business. Ed Abbott Joined Jaguar Cars Ltd. in 1970, and between 1978 and 1985 was responsible for all of Jaguar s major development test programmes, running durability programmes in Italy and Canada on preproduction development cars. He was also involved in all aspects of performance and road holding issues related to development cars. In 1982, with brother Lionel, Ed started Abbott Racing with Lionel as racing driver and Ed as engineer. Ed left Jaguar in 1985 to concentrate on Abbot Racing and consultant work within the motor racing industry. Building a Performance V4 Ford Engine Jack Ashcraft Saturday, August 21, 10:00 a.m., Crystal Mountain Chapel Jack bought his first SAAB in 1964, a 1959 93F. In 1968, he opened Pacific Motor Imports in San Luis Obispo, California, and served as the Service and Parts Manager. In 1976, he earned a BS in Industrial Design from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and shortly thereafter began teaching Advanced Automotive Design. In 1982, Jack started Drakenparts, a Sonett and 96 parts business he runs to this day. Jack Ashcraft is the author of 12 books on the V4 powered SAAB, is a frequent contributor to NINES, and between 1992 and 1997 he published 28 issues of The SAAB Journal. He has developed over 30 special tools for use on V4 powered SAABs. Today, in addition to running Drakenparts, Jack is a highly sought after engine rebuilder and restorer. He currently owns a 1972 Sonett III and 2002 Subaru WRX Wagon. His current project car is a 1937 Fiat Topolino Street Rod, with 160 horsepower Fiat engine, 4wheel disc brakes, cruise, tilt, and that wonderful rollback convertible top.

What s New at the SAAB Museum Peter Backstrom Saturday, August 21, 1:00, Crystal Mountain Chapel Many participants at SAAB Owners Conventions over the years have been entertained by Curator Peter Backstrom s talks on his collection and recent activities. This year, Peter promises to bring us up to speed with recent news from Trolhatten, including such topics as: The restoration story of the first SAAB 99 turbo The SAAB Formula Junior Some comparisons between the SAAB 96 V4 and the SAAB 92X SAAB rallying and Subaru rallying SAAB Classic Gossip He will also cover the Goodwood Festival of Speed with Erik Carlsson and the Sonett Super Sport, as well as a fresh report from the recentlycompleted International SAAB Club meeting in Denmark. Project Laura SAAB Club Members Restore a Vintage SAAB Tom Nelson Saturday, August 21, 2:00, Crystal Mountain Chapel Vintage auto restoration by a group of 10 to 20 car nuts is not the way it is usually done. But the Rocky Mountain SAAB Club of Colorado pulled it off. Come see their seminar on how your group could do the same! Using digital video, audio and slides in a specially produced DVD format they put the entire process up for your review. You can relive the experiences of these dedicated club members as they worked together for 21/2 years on a 1970 Model 96 that originally came to them from Seattle. See what can be done with a vintage SAAB that was one step away from being sent to the crusher. More than fifty work parties and 1000 hours of labor produce an outcome that makes their club membership proud and much more knowledgeable on the effort that goes into the restoration process. And they are still talking to each other! What s more, they have recently commenced work on fixing up their third old SAAB... Project Tristine. Tom Nelson is a retired aerospace engineering manager who has devoted a considerable amount of his retirement to SAAB Club activities in Colorado and around the USA. He and his wife Avis have owned 14 SAABs since their first SAAB 99 SSE in 1972, and have accumulated nearly 1 million miles in their SAABs. In addition to working on the Planning Committee for several SOCs, Tom served as Chairman of the largest SAAB Owners Convention ever held west of New England Keystone 1999. Tom and Avis currently own an MC850, a 99 GLi, an SPG and a 95 Aero SportWagon.

SAAB The Early Years in America Bob Sinclair Saturday, August 21, 3:00, Bull Wheel Pub Bob Sinclair was the President and CEO of SAABScania of America from 1971 to 1991. He is known for increasing SAAB sales in the U.S. market in the 1980s, and for his flamboyant style. Though he has retired, he remains quite busy... and opinionated. Join Bob as he reminisces and shares his stories from the early days of SAAB in North America, when he used to travel the backroads of the Northeast in a SAAB 93 with a spare motor in the trunk. Scuderia Stallbacka Historic Racing with Saab 96 Twostroker in Sweden Peter Backstrom Saturday, August 21, 4:00, Bull Wheel Pub In his second seminar of the day, Peter will make a presentation on historic racing, regulations, and preparation of a SAAB Twostroker for racing according to the very stiff rule system in place in Europe. He promises to include some stories as well...! Who drives the SAAB in the team? Peter! SAAB Roundtable Kevin Smith, John Moss, John Libbos, Darren Aklan Sunday, August 22, 9:00 a.m., Main Dining Room Here is your chance to talk with senior SAAB executives about SAAB s current vehicle offerings, as well as products which are in the works. A staple of every SAAB convention, the Roundtable is a free flowing question and answer session where you are able to speak your mind and have your concerns answered by the top eschelons of SAAB management.

Debra KelleyEnnis President and COO SAAB Cars USA Debra KellyEnnis was named President and Chief Operating Officer for SAAB Cars USA in October 2002. KellyEnnis joined General Motors in 1999 as the brand manager for Chevrolet S10 trucks, where she led the effort to revitalize one of the company s top three volume brands, contributing to GM s current truck leadership position. The responsibility included development of strategic product plans and launch direction for the allnew 2004 Chevrolet Colorado. She was promoted to the position of Oldsmobile General Manager in 2000. Prior to joining General Motors, KellyEnnis held senior marketing, sales and general manager positions with companies such as RJR/Nabisco and Grand Metropolitan, PLC. KellyEnnis earned a bachelor s degree in education from the University of Texas in 1979 and an MBA in marketing from the University of Houston in 1981. She also completed the executive leadership program at Harvard Business School. Erik Carlsson Mr. SAAB To many SAAB enthusiasts, no convention is complete without the presence of Erik Carlsson, and we are indeed honored to have him join us once again at Crystal Mountain. Erik started his rally career with SAAB in 1954, and quickly earned the nickname Pa Taket (On the Roof) for his aggressive driving style, which sometimes left him with all four wheels pointing skyward though he always returned rightside up for the next rally. After winning the Monte Carlo rally in a SAAB 96, Erik became an international motorsport hero. Since retiring from rallying, Erik has continued his career with SAAB as the company s worldwide goodwill ambassador.

Larry Stroker Williams Spirit of SAAB Award This annual memorial trophy honors the memory of a very special SAAB owner, Larry Williams, who died in 1998, just prior to that year s National SAAB Convention. He is truly missed by his many friends. Stroker, as he was fondly known by many SAAB owners, was an annual fixture at every SAAB convention with his wife, Katha, and his red 1963 bullnose SAAB 96, affectionately known as Sadie. Larry was a true enthusiast and he shared that enthusiasm with everyone he met. This award is given annually to the person who best embodies Larry s dedication and passion for SAABs. Previous winners include: Tom Donney 1998 Bruce Billing 1999 Bud Clark 2000 Rudy Zweibel 2001 Bruce Turk 2002 Bruce Welch 2003 This year s winner will be announced Saturday evening during the awards ceremony.

Walter Kern Award The Walter Kern Award is given annually by the New England Sonett Club. Walter passed away in October of 1999. Walter lived in New England and raced cars for fun. Thinking that the twostroke engine and innovative automobile design would lend its self well to racing applications, he got into SAABs back in the late 1950s. Walter s efforts culminated in the early 1960s with his design, development and construction of three of his Quantums, a SAABpowered, twoseat sports car, and near contemporary of the original SAAB Sonett. Two of these cars still survive. The Quantum was an exercise in creative and original design it was perhaps the first car in the world to be designed with the aid of a new thing called a computer. In later years, Walter continued to experiment and build, and eventually created his electricpowered Sonett, and his turbo Sonett. In addition to Walter s many other pursuits and interests, he was always very active in the SAAB community. He was a very early member of the New England Sonett Club and served as it s president through most of the 1990s. In the spirit of Walter s inventiveness, this award was created to honor those in the SAAB world who have chosen to do something different from what the factory originally had in mind. This is not a concours competition, as Walter s cars were far from that. No matter if a car has been modified for competition, or just for fun and looks, this award is for those who have invested their time, effort and expense into their SAAB to do something different.

People s Choice Awards Each registered convention attendee will receive a People s Choice Awards ballot in their convention Goodie Bag. The judging is purely subjective, based on attendees personal opinions. Cars competing in the People s Choice competition must be parked in the Upper Parking Lot Saturday morning between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m, and remain there until after the group photo. Owners of competing cars should display their convention registration form on the dash with registration number prominently displayed. Ballots must be turned in by 12:00 noon on Saturday at the main registration desk in the Chapel. There are four categories in the People s Choice Category this year. Best of Show Award The car which looks closest to showroom condition Survivor Award The most unlikely car to survive driving on a regular basis Car I Most Wish Was Mine Award The one which would look best in your driveway Personality Award The car which just makes you want to smile The winner in each category will be the owner of the car which receives the most votes in that category. Awards will be presented during the Saturday Evening Awards Banquet. Crisman Award The Crisman Memorial Award is an annual award, instituted at the 2003 SAAB Owners Convention in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The award is presented by the SAAB Club of North America and sponsored by Scott Paterson and The SAAB Network. The award is named in honor of the Crisman Brothers of New Hampshire. Kyle, age 18, and Tim, age 17, both SAAB enthusiasts, lost their lives in an auto accident in early November, 2002. The competition is open to all SAABs of any year or model owned by a person 21 years of age or younger. Any and all modifications to engine, interior, exterior, sound system, or suspension are allowed. The award is based upon a People s Choice voting system. A prize will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place. Trophies will be sponsored by The SAAB Network, and the large crystal trophy which remains with TSN will be displayed at next year s convention with the 1st Place winner s name inscribed on a brass plaque.

Concours Awards The philosophy of the Concours d SAAB is to display SAAB automobiles in the best possible light, and as close to original specifications as the car would have when rolled off the assembly line. Care and maintenance of SAABs is paramount to high scores in this competition. Restoration to original specifications will also yield high scores. Genuine SAAB Accessories, as seen in a service manual, an accessories brochure, or car sales brochure, are acceptable in the same vein as the original specification equipment. An accessorized car gains no advantage in the judging, nor does it suffer a disadvantage vs. a nonaccessorized car. For example, a dirty wheel is a dirty wheel, whether it is a factoryfitted 15spoke, or an accessory 8spoke. (continued, next page) Sponsor of 2004 Concours Awards

NonSAAB accessories are discouraged in the Concours d SAAB. Owing to the fact that some of the cars in the Concours d SAAB are daily drivers for their owners, certain quality of life accessories are permitted (i.e. cell phone holders/antennae, cup holders, etc.). As long as said items do not interfere with examining the condition of the vehicle and their installation does not damage visible parts of the vehicle, no deduction for their installation shall be made. Cars competing in the Concours must be parked in the Upper Parking Lot Saturday morning between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m, and remain there until after the group photo. Owners of competing cars should display their convention registration and Concours Judging form prominently on the dash or front seat. Categories for the Concours d SAAB Awards include: 92/93 95/96 2Stroke 95/96 V4 Sonett II and V4 Sonett III 99 Classic 900 New Generation 900 Classic 9000 9000 CS and CD Competition Sponsor of the Self Paced Scenic Drive Within each category, an award will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place during the Saturday Evening Awards Banquet.

Attendance Challenge Individual Challenge 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Awards for the individual(s) travelling in the same car. Points are calculated according to a formula which takes into consideration the distance driven, number of people in the car, and age of the car. Club Challenge 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Awards for the local and regional SAAB clubs. Points are based on the sum of all of the individual score sheets for Individual Challenge entrants who belong to the same club. Distance Award This year there will also be one additional Individual Long Distance award to recognize the longest absolute distance driven in any SAAB regardless of model or the number of passengers. This is to make certain that, as we continue to encourage groups to come in vintage SAABs, we certainly want to also encourage the intrepid individual driver that will travel day and night from the far corners of North America to make it to any SAAB Owners Convention. Best SAAB Fleet in North America Who has bragging rights to the Best Saab Fleet in North America? We intend to find out by letting the attendees at SOC04 select the best fleet in two categories: Individual/Family and Business/ Corporate. Many owners pride themselves on the many SAABs that they currently have parked in their driveways, but what makes a fleet the best? We suspect the elements of a winning entry will include variety and rarity of models, visual condition, and certainly photographic presentation. Entries for this competition, debuting in this year s SOC, will be on display in the Bull Wheel Pub on Friday and Saturday, with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place winners announced at the Saturday Awards Banquet.
