Section 10 DESCRIPTION AND SPECIFICATIONS 10-5-1 Group S DESCRIPTION Fig. 10-S-I-Right Side View 0 2020 HU Tractor John Deere 2020 Tractors are utility-type wheel tractors available in three basic styles: 2020 RU, 2020 HU, and 2020 LU. The 2020 Series Tractors are full four-plow units designed for general purpose farming. They are low-built for extra stability. A 2020 Grove Tractor is also available. This tractor is_ fully shielded for work in groves, orchards, and vineyards. These tractors are available with either gasoline or diesel engines. Other components of the various models are very similar. The main features of the tractors are described in the paragraphs which follow. Full descriptions of components are given in other sections throughout this manual. SERIAL NUMBERS The engine serial number is stamped on a plate at the right side of the engine cylinder block. The tractor serial number is located at the right side of the transmission case. NOTE: When ordering tractor and engine parts, record all the digits on the serial number pad. An explanation of the serial number digits is given on the next page. SM-2072 (Nov-66) Litho in U.S.A.

Separating Rockshaft From Transmission Tractors, 2020 Series Tractor Separation 20-25-1 Group 25 SEPARATING ROCKSHAFT FROM TRANSMISSION IMPORTANT: Use care and cleanliness when working on any hydraulic system. The smallest amount of dirt or;joreign matter, scratch, nick or burr can make a hydraulic sys tem inoperative. Check for evidence of leakage in hydraulic system before removal. Disconnect battery ground straps for safety. Remove transmission case top shield. Disconnect leads from starter safety switch. Remove seat assembly from rocks haft housing (Section 210). Disconnect hitch lift links from rockshaft arms. Disconnect coupler lines (if equipped) from rear of selective control valve. Remove oil return hose between selective control valve and rocks haft housing. Fig. ;20-25-2-Removing Rockshaft Housing Place the load selector lever in the "L" position so that the load selector link with roller will guide over the cam follower during removal (Fig. 20-25-2). Attach one JD-244 engine adapter to top of rocks haft housing as shown in Fig. 20-25-2. Remove attaching cap screws from rockshaft housing (arrows, Fig. 20-25-1). Using chain hoist, lift rockshaft housing from transmission as shown in Fig. 20-25-2. NOTE: Cover rockshaft opening in top of transmission to keep out dirt or foreign matter. Oil Pump and Oil Filter Tractors, 2020 Series Engine Lubrication System 60-5-5 PUMP T 9783 Fig, 60-5-7 -Measuring Clearance Between Pump Gears and Body Fig. 60-5-9-lnstalling Oil Pressure Regulating Valve Bushing Remove damaged bushing and press new bushing into block using JD-248 tool (Fig. 60-5-9). Press in bushing until outer recessed edge of bushing is flush with bottom of counterbore in block. IMPORTANT: Do not press on raised inner rim of bushing. This rim is the regulating valve seat. Check oil pressure regulating spring for rusty or fractured coils. If spring is damaged in any way, replace it. Check threads on pressure regulating valve plug for damage. Replace if necessary. T 9784 Fig_ 60-5-8-Measuring Clearance Height of Pump Gears Place a straightedge across top of housing (to represent cover) and measure clearance between gears and straightedge (See "Specifications"). Replace gears and (or) housing if necessary. OIL PRESSURE REGULATING VALVE AND SEAT Check pressure regulating valve for damage and replace if necessary. Inspect regulating valve seat in front of cylinder block for damage (especially at raised rim of bushing). If regulating valve bushing must be replaced, remove radiator and engine timing cover for access. (See Section 80, Group 10 and Section 50, Group 30 for details.) SM-2072 (Jul-69) Litho in U. S. A. OIL FILTER Unscrew filter element from engine and discard it. Inspect oil passages at mounting point on cylinder block or obstructions. If filter base nipple in block is damaged, refer to Section 50, Group 15 for replacement details. ASSEMBLY NOTE: Refer to Figure 60-5-5 for correct relationship of parts. Press idler shaft (12) into pump housing until flush with outer surface of housing. Using JD-253 Tool or other suitable tool, press bushing (13) into shaft bore of housing until flush with surface inside housing. Place gear and shaft in housing. Install pump idler gear on idler shaft in housing. Check to see that both gears rotate freely in housing. Install new O-ring (17) in oil outlet opening in oil pump cover.
140-10-2 Tractors, 2020 Series Transmission Driven PTO Shafts and Controls NOTE: To service the PTa disconnect, remove counters haft and low and high range shifter shafts from transmission as instructed in Section 120, Groups 10 and 15. Fig. 140.10.3-R~moving PTO Dis(:onnect Holding shifter collar, remove PTO drive shaft from transmission (if not removed). Remove shifter collar. Fig. 140 10.4-Pressing Powershaft from Quill To replace powershaft or bearing, remove snap rings and press off old bearing (Fig. 140-10-4). Press on new bearing until snap rings fit in grooves. Remove lock wire around set screw and remove screw securing shifter to shaft. Rem.ove snap rings and washers from end of shifter shaft. Slide shaft out front of transmission case and remove shifter from transmission case. Rem.ove roll pin securing shifter arm to shifter lever and remove lever and arm from transmission case. PTO POWERSHAFT INSPECTION AND REPAIR Inspect powers haft for wear or damage. Inspect bearing in powers haft quill for damage. Fig. 140-10-5-Powershaft Qui II Oil Seal Inspect powershaft quill for damage. Check for evidence of leakage around oil seal (Fig. 140-10- 5). If necessary, remove old seal and press in new seal (with lips of seal facing driver) to bottom of bore in quill. SM-2072 (10-65) Litho in U.S.A.
Steering Valve Tractors, 2020 Series Power Steering (Grove Tractors) 196-10-3 BEARING SUPPORT, BEARING, VALVE SPOOL, AND SHAFT Fig. 196-10-S-Removing Rotor Retaining Ring Remove rotor retaining ring (Fig. 196-10-5) with pair of snap ring pliers and a small screwdriver. Pull out both rmg dowel pins. Fig. 196-10-7-Bearing Support and Shaft Tap end of shaft with mallet until bearing support (Fig. 196-10-7) rises out of housing. Remove bearing support. Fig. 196-10-8-Valve Spool and Shaft Assembly Fig. 196-10-6-Rotor and Ring Assembly Remove rotor and ring assembly (Fig. 196-10-6) by pulling upward on the ring with a slight rocking motion. Pull on valve spool shaft (Fig. 196-10-8) until the whole assembly slides freely out of the housing. Do not use force. Spool and bore tolerances are very small and forcing could cause the spool to jam and damage parts. If the spool binds or jams, push the assembly back into bore and attempt removal again.
