Overview This standard covers the preparation and operation of a powered vehicle. The standard does not cover the use of tractors. The standard covers the use of a powered vehicle in a variety of weather conditions, ground conditions and terrain. These conditions will have an impact on the handling and use of the vehicle. When using a powered vehicle on the public highway you will need to hold the appropriate licenses for both yourself and the vehicle. You must carry out your work in a way which will consider any impact on the natural environment. This standard is suitable for anyone who operates a powered vehicle on or off the public highway. LANCS9 1

Performance criteria You must be able to: P1 wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment P2 prepare appropriate powered vehicle by carrying out pre-start checks and adjustments in accordance with specifications and in line with current legislation P3 confirm the powered vehicle is safe and ready for use P4 check and adjust operator environment to meet personal requirements P5 check the immediate work area for hazards and obstacles before moving off P6 use the correct warning signals at all times P7 operate and manoeuvre the powered vehicle safely, and consistent with the type of vehicle and operation P8 change driving techniques to take into account any changes in weather, ground conditions and types of terrain P9 deal with any hazards and obstacles encountered during operation in accordance with instructions P10 stop and isolate powered vehicle on completion of activity in line with standard practice P11 leave the powered vehicle secure after use and in a suitable condition for future use P12 carry out all work in accordance with relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and company policies LANCS9 2
