1. Introduction Fixed belt conveyor is transmission equipment with large transportation capacity. It is a durable and reliable component used in automated distribution and warehousing. It is low cost and widely used in industries of chemical, coal, construction, hydropower, light, metallurgy, mining, port, petroleum and etc. Besides, those in general material handling such as moving boxes along inside a factory and bulk material handling such as those used to transport large volume of resources and agricultural materials such as grain, salt, coal, ore, sand, overburden and more. 2. Advantages Easy maintenance Large conveying capacity Long conveying distance No product degradation Stable performance and reliable operation 1 / 21
3. Working Principle Belt conveyor is composed by two endpoint pulleys and a closed conveyor belt. The pulley that drives conveyor belt rotating is called drive pulley or transmission drum; the other one only used to change conveyor belt movement direction is called bend pulley. Drive pulley is driven by the motor through reducer, and conveyor belt dragging relies on the friction drag between the drive pulley and the conveyor belt. The drive pulleys are generally installed at the discharge end in order to increase traction and be easy to drag. Material is fed on the feed-side and landed on the rotating conveyor belt, then rely on the conveyor belt friction to be delivered to discharge end. Schematic Diagram of Belt Conveyor 2 / 21

5. Sketch Map 6. Components of Belt Conveyor 4 / 21
1) Belt Belt is used for moving and supporting surface on which the conveyed material rides. It is the traction element. Which type of belt will be used depend on the nature of materials to be transported. Flat Belt Herringbone Belt ST Belt CC Belt 5 / 21
2) Pulley A conveyor belt system uses different types of pulleys like end pulley, snub pulley, bend pulley etc. Just as the following photos shows: Pulleys for Belt Conveyor Measurement Needed for Pulley Design Pulleys of Belt Conveyor Onsite 6 / 21
3) Idlers or Rollers Idlers/Rollers are the supports for the carrying and return stands of the belt. Flat Rollers Impact Rollers Impact Roller Set Aligning Roller Sets Comb Rollers Roller Sets Onsite 7 / 21
4) Driving Unit Driving unit imparts power to one or more pulleys to move the belt and its loads. Belt drive is provided normally at the discharge ends, however, it may be provided through the head end or through intermediate pulley by coupling the pulley shaft to the reducing gear s output shaft. The coupling is selected based on the load characteristics and applications. Flexible coupling or fluid couplings are often used. Motorized Pulley Motor + Coupling + Reducer Motorized Pulley Motor + Coupling + Reducer 8 / 21
5) Conveyor Frame Frame is the support and maintains the alignments of the idlers and pulleys. Besides, it also supports the driving machinery. The support of conveyor is normally a structural frame. Depending on the situation the structure can be mounted on floor or on skid. The main job of the support is to let the belt run without getting skewed. Depending on situations the support can be made moving type. In such cases idler a wheel mounted or crawler mounted platform keeps the necessary provision to support the idlers on which the conveyor runs. 9 / 21
6) Belt Cleaner Belt cleaner keeps the belt free from materials sticking to the belt. A belt conveyor consists of a pre-cleaner and a T-cleaner (Secondary Cleaners). The pre-cleaner or known as primary cleaners has excellent abrasion resistance and uses polyurethane blades which are friendly to conveyor belt. It always keeps optimum surface pressure by spring-tensioned structures and there is no troublesome tension adjustment. The T-cleaner uses super hard chip for blade materials, it always keeps optimum surface pressure by spring tensioned structure just like pre-cleaner. Pre-cleaner T-cleaner Belt Cleaner 10 / 21
7) Tension Unit Tension unit is used to maintain the proper tension of the belt for effective power transmission. The purposes of take-up are: a. To allow for stretch and shrinkage of the belt. b. To ensure that the minimum tension in the belt is sufficient to prevent undue sag between idlers. c. To ensure that the tension in the belt in the rear of the drive pulley is sufficient to permit such pulley to transmit the load. Screw Tension Unit Horizontal Automatic Gravity Tension Unit Vertical Automatic Gravity Tension Unit 11 / 21
7. Application It can transport bulk materials or bagged goods, such as stone, sand, coal, concrete, cement, gravel, fertilizer, mineral ore, limestone, coke, sawdust, wood chip, bulk material, grain, corn flakes, carbon black, component/part, etc. Ore Coal Grain Bags Fertilizer Port 12 / 21
8. Belt Conveyor Troubleshooting Belt bowed Problems Belt improperly spliced or wrong fasteners Belt speed too fast Belt strained on one side Breaker strip missing or inadequate Counterweight too heavy Counterweight too light Damage by abrasives, acid, chemicals, heat, mildew, oil Differential speed wrong on dual pulleys Drive under belted Edge worn or broken Excessive impact of material on belt or fasteners Idler rolls not turning Solutions Avoid telescoping belt rolls or storing them in damp locations. A new belt should straighten out when broken in or it must be replaced. Use correct fasteners. Retighten after running for a short while. If improperly spliced, remove belt splice and make new splice. Set up regular inspection schedule. Reduce belt speed Allow time for new belt to break in. If belt does not break in properly or is not new, remove strained section and splice in a new piece. When service is lost, install belt with proper breaker strip Recalculate weight and adjust counterweight accordingly. (If using screw takeups, reduce takeup tension to point of slip, then tighten slightly) Recalculate weight required and adjust counterweight accordingly. (If using screw takeups, increase tension) Use belt designed for specific condition. For abrasive materials working into cuts and between piles, make spot repairs with cold patch or with permanent repair patch. Seal metal fasteners or replace with vulcanized step splice. Enclose conveyor for protection against rain, snow and sun. Don t over-lubricate idlers. Make necessary adjustment. Recalculate maximum belt tensions and select correct belt. If conveyor is over-extended, consider using two-flight system with transfer point. If carcass is not rigid enough for load, install belt with proper flexibility when service is lost. Repair belt edge. Remove badly worn or out of square section and splice in a new piece. Use correctly designed chutes and baffles. Make vulcanized splices. Install impact idlers. Where possible, load fines first. Where material is trapped under skits, adjust skirtboards to minimum clearance. Correct or replace stalled rolls. Lubricate. Improve maintenance. (Don t over lubricate) 13 / 21
Problems Idlers or pulleys out of square with center line of conveyor Idlers improperly placed Improper loading, spillage Improper storage or handling Insufficient traction between belt and pulley Material between belt and pulley Material build-up Pulley lagging worn Pulleys too small Radius of convex vertical curve too small Relative loading velocity too high or too low Side loading Skirts improperly placed Solutions Realign. Install limit switches for greater safety. Relocate idlers or insert additional idlers spaced to support belt. Feed should be in direction of belt travel and at belt speed, centered on the belt. Control flow with feeders, chutes and skirtboards. Refer to your belt supplier for storage and handling tips. Increase wrap with snub pulleys. Lag drive pulley. In wet conditions, use grooved lagging. Install and correct cleaning devices on belt. Install centrifugal switch for safety. Use skirtboards properly. Remove accumulation. Improve maintenance. Remove accumulation. Install cleaning devices, scrapers and inverted V decking. Improve housekeeping. Replace worn pulley lagging. Use grooved lagging for wet conditions Use larger diameter pulleys. Increase radius by vertical alignment of idlers to prevent excessive edge tension. Adjust chutes or correct belt speed. Consider use impact idlers. Load in direction of belt travel, in center of conveyor. Installed skirtboards so that they do not rub against belt. 14 / 21
