Car Theft Index 1999
Introduction Vehicle crime accounts for just over one-fifth of all crimes recorded by the police. Although the number of crimes have been falling steadily since 1992, around 400,000 vehicles are still stolen every year. Car Theft Index The Car Theft Index shows which makes and models of car are most at risk of being stolen in England, Scotland and Wales, but does not attempt to highlight regional trends. It is based on 1998 theft data taken from the Police National Computer (PNC) and on information provided by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) on the number of cars on the road. Not all models of car are included in the Index. Only those where there were sufficient numbers on the road to provide statistically reliable results are shown. This Index is an improvement on the 1997 Car Theft Index as it includes a more extensive breakdown of car models. How to use the Index The left hand side of each table lists the makes and models of cars included in the Index in alphabetical order. To see whether a particular car is at highest, medium or lower risk of theft, read along the line to the right until you find the column showing the year in which the car was first registered. For vehicles stolen in 1998, therefore, the risk of theft is colour coded as follows: RED Highest risk (more than 21 cars in every 1000 on the road stolen). AMBER Medium risk (between 4 and 21 cars in every 1000 on the road stolen). GREEN Lower risk (up to 3 cars in every 1000 on the road stolen). What to do next If your car is not in one of the higher risk categories and you are already following the crime prevention advice given below - congratulations! But be vigilant. Improved levels of security, fitted by manufacturers to new cars, will partly explain why the Index shows that newer cars are at a lesser risk of being stolen, whereas older cars are at a higher risk. However, the risk may change over time as thieves catch up with new technologies, or when particular makes of car become more especially desirable, or when there is a demand for second hand parts from older cars. More important though, good levels of security will be undermined if owners do not use the measures provided or they leave their cars in vulnerable situations. All car owners and drivers can do a lot to reduce the risk: Secure the doors, windows, boot and sun roof every time you leave the car and take your keys with you at the petrol station when you go to pay. Never leave your credit or other plastic cards in the car. If you have to leave briefcases and other items in the vehicle, put them out of sight, preferably before you start your journey. Consider, even an old coat or jacket left on the back seat may be a target for a thief hoping to find a wallet in the pockets. With good security on your vehicle, your car keys may be the only way a thief can steal your car. Take good care of them, and hide the spare set away in your home. Owners of more vulnerable vehicles can also further reduce the risk of theft by using properly installed Thatcham compliant or Sold Secure approved security devices. 2 White blocks are used where a particular make/model of car was not available in the years shown. Grey blocks are used where there are too few cars of that type on the road for an accurate risk assessment to be made. Insurance groups The risk of theft in this Index will not necessarily match the insurance rating for a given car, because the insurance ratings also include a large element related to the accident repair costs of a vehicle, which are not covered here. In addition, of course, actual premiums are related to other factors such as the driver and the geographical location of the vehicle.
