307-05-1 Automatic Transaxle/Transmission External Controls 307-05-1 DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING Visual Inspection Chart External Controls Mechanical Electrical Refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 37 for schematic and Shift control linkage Circuitry. connector information. binding. Shift control cable. 17 (15A) Interlock cable. 28 (15A) Special Tool(s) 35 (15A) Brake pedal position 73 Digital Multimeter (BPP) switch. 105-R0051 or equivalent Wiring harness. Loose or corroded connections. Bulb. Inspection and Verification 1. Verify the customer concern by operating the transmission external control. 2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage; refer to the following chart: 3. If the concern is not visually evident, determine the symptom. GO to Symptom Chart. 307-05-2 Automatic Transaxle/Transmission External Controls 307-05-2 DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING SYMPTOM CHART Condition Possible Sources Action The Transmission Control CJB Fuse 28 (15A). GO to Pinpoint Test C. Switch (TCS) Is Inoperative TCS. TCS not cycled during self-test. Powertrain control module (PCM). Circuitry. The Transmission Control Bulb. REFER to Section 413-01. Indicator Lamp (TCIL) Is t Instrument cluster. Operating Correctly Powertrain control module. Excessive Shift Effort Transmission INSTALL a new transmission Cable bracket. ADJUST the cable. TIGHTEN the screws. Transmission Range Selector Transmission INSTALL a new transmission Lever Will t Shift Broken transmission shift INSTALL a new transmission cable. Pinpoint Tests A1 A2 PINPOINT TEST A: THE SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM DOES NOT RELEASE/LOCK CORRECTLY TEST THE BRAKE LIGHTS Key in ON position. Apply the brake pedal and observe the stoplamps. GO to A2. Do the stoplamps illuminate? REFER to Section 417-01. CHECK CIRCUIT 511 (LG) FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: Shift Lock Actuator C2127. Measure the voltage between the shift lock actuator C2127-3, Circuit 511 (LG), harness side and ground while depressing and releasing the brake pedal. A3 GO to A3. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts with the brake pedal depressed and 0 volts with the brake pedal released? normal operation. CHECK CIRCUIT 294 (WH/LB) FOR AN OPEN Key in ON position.

307-05-3 Automatic Transaxle/Transmission External Controls 307-05-3 DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING A3 PINPOINT TEST A: THE SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM DOES NOT RELEASE/LOCK CORRECTLY CHECK CIRCUIT 294 (WH/LB) FOR AN OPEN Measure the voltage between shift lock actuator C2127-1, Circuit 294 (WH/LB), harness side and ground. A4 GO to A4. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? normal operation. TEST CIRCUIT 1205 (BK) FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between shift lock actuator C2127-2, Circuit 1205 (BK), harness side and ground. INSTALL a new shift lock actuator. REFER to Brake Shift Interlock Actuator. TEST the system for normal operation. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? normal operation. B1 B2 PINPOINT TEST B: THE SHIFT CONTROL IS OUT OF CORRECT GEAR RELATIONSHIP CHECK THE SHIFT CONTROL LINKAGE Key in ON position. Apply the brake pedal. GO to B2. Actuate the transmission range selector lever in all ranges. Observe the shift control linkage during operation. REPAIR as necessary. TEST the system Is the shift control linkage OK? for normal operation. CHECK THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE Check the transmission shift cable and bracket installation and tightness. GO to B3. Is the transmission shift cable correctly installed and adjusted? REPAIR as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.

307-05-4 Automatic Transaxle/Transmission External Controls 307-05-4 DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING PINPOINT TEST B: THE SHIFT CONTROL IS OUT OF CORRECT GEAR RELATIONSHIP B3 CHECK THE LINKAGE/CABLE FOR CORRECT GEAR RELATIONSHIP Apply the brake pedal. Actuate the transmission range selector lever in all ranges. VERIFY the correct adjustment of the Does the indicator match the gear selection? digital transmission range (DTR) sensor. REFER to Section 307-01. Adjust the digital DTR sensor if necessary. TEST the system for normal operation. ADJUST the transmission REFER to Cable Adjustment. TEST the system for normal operation. C1 PINPOINT TEST C: THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH (TCS) IS INOPERATIVE CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH Disconnect: Transmission Control Switch C279. Key in ON position. Measure the voltage between TCS C279-3, Circuit 911 (WH/LG), harness side and ground. C2 GO to C2. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? normal operation. CHECK THE TCS Measure the resistance between TCS Pin 3 (component side), and TCS Pin 4 (component side), while depressing and releasing the TCS. C3 GO to C3. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms with the TCS depressed INSTALL a new TCS. Test the system for and greater than 10,000 ohms with the TCS released? normal operation. CHECK CIRCUIT 224 (TN/WH) FOR AN OPEN

307-05-5 Automatic Transaxle/Transmission External Controls 307-05-5 DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING PINPOINT TEST C: THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH (TCS) IS INOPERATIVE C3 CHECK CIRCUIT 224 (TN/WH) FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: PCM C175. Measure the resistance between TCS C279-4, Circuit 224 (TN/WH), harness side and PCM C175-29, Circuit 224 (TN/WH), harness side. REFER to Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? normal operation.
