5.2 Market Segmentation 5.2.1 Segmentation Overview 5.2.1.1 Overview, by Volume, 12) Table: The UK Market for Opening, Volume, 450 400 350 300 250 200 150 100 50 Up and Over Doors Sectional Doors Roller Doors Side Hinged Doors Sliding Doors Folding Doors 0 2003 2004 2005 2006 2003 2004 2005 2006 Δ 03-07 MS 07 Up and Over Doors Sectional Doors Roller Doors Side Hinged Doors Sliding Doors Folding Doors Total Unit: 000 doors Source: Trade and MSI estimates Up and over garage doors are still the market-leading products in terms of sales volume. During the review period sales grew by almost XX%, driven by the increase of construction output. However, this growth could have been even greater if the necessity to supply new dwellings to the population had not determined a shift from construction of houses, typically equipped with individual garages, to the construction of multistorey residential complexes, typically equipped with shared parking facilities. As a result, up and over garage doors have lost market share to most other types of garage door. MSI Doors: UK September 2008 MSI Reports www.msi-reports.co.uk 36
Sales volumes of sectional garage doors increased strongly during the review period, the result of marketing policies aimed at repositioning the product from a niche product to a mainstream product. Sales of roller garage doors have also increased, the product being mainly appreciated for its perceived security features. However, also significant changes in the look of the product have contributed to boost sales. Sales of side hinged garage doors rose strongly during the review period. Strict council regulations to preserve the look of conservation areas and the possibility to automate the product with satisfactory results have driven an increase in sales volume. Sliding garage doors have not been particularly popular during the review period. Trade sources believe that the lack of consumer favour is due to high prices, low consumer product awareness, and the significant use of space that the installation of this product entails. 5.3.5 Segmentation, by Material, 20) Table: The UK Market for Up and Over Doors, by Type of Material, 250 225 200 175 150 125 100 75 Steel GRP Timber PVC 50 25 0 2003 2004 2005 2006 2003 2004 2005 2006 Δ 03-07 MS 07 Steel GRP Timber PVC Total Unit: 000 doors Source: Trade and MSI estimates Steel was clearly the most popular material for the manufacturing of up and over garage doors during the review period. The success of this material was essentially due to the fact that steel is the cheapest material available on the market. Moreover, steel is perceived to be sturdy, resistant and does not require any particular maintenance. The market share of GRP appears to be very modest when compared to steel. However, GRP is the second fastest growing material on the market. Its popularity is mainly due to its capacity to imitate the look of other materials without presenting the disadvantages that are traditionally associated with them, for example, frequent maintenance required by solid wood. 5.8 Segmentation, by Type of Package 5.8.1. Overview, by Type of Package, 58) Table: The UK Market for Package, 450 400 350 300 250 200 150 Framed Pre-Assembled Kit 100 50 0 2003 2004 2005 2006 2003 2004 2005 2006 Δ 03-07 MS 07 Framed Pre-Assembled Kit Total Unit: 000 doors Source: Trade and MSI estimates Framed garage doors do not require the separate installation of panels and frames as the product comes to the market ready to be directly fitted in the threshold of the garage. Framed doors are usually up and over doors, and as framed doors are cheap and easy to install, they are the favourite choice of building professionals. In fitting pre-assembled garage doors, some parts of the product need to be assembled by the installer. Virtually every kind of door can come to the market in this format. During the review period sales of this kind of product rose in line with the overall market growth, resulting in a stable market share.
