The Erie Foundry Company designs and manufactu res quality machine tools that are used around the world. Erie presses have been built to stamp, cut, blank, mold, compact, trim, extrude and forge all kinds of ferrous and non-ferrous materials for a wide variety of manufacturing industries. Our ruggedly built mechanical forging press has become one of the premiere pieces of equipment in the company product line and is the net result of over 68 years ' experience as a producer of forging equipment. EXPERIENCE We began to hone our forging talents in 1904 as a manufacturer of steam and drop hammers which became, and still are, a vital production tool for the automotive and other industries. Attesting to our capability in this area is the fact that a majority of the hammers in use in the U.S. today carry the Erie nameplate. This skill naturally evolved into the manufacture of forging presses- both mechanical and hydraulicand by the late 1950's the company had turned the bulk of its talents to the development of a full line of forging equipment. These years of experience and dedication to understanding and improving the process give our team of forging specialists a capability that can be useful to you. At Erie we 've got what it takes to forge. SCOTCH YOKE CONCEPT APPLIED Erie has successfully applied the Scotch Yoke concept to the mechanical forging press. This has been called the only really significant forging press development in years. It permits the manufacture of a shorter, more rigid machine that results in many operational and press maintenance benefits, including less overall weight. It can mean savings on your production line. 2 WIDE RANGE OF PRESS TONNAGES Our capability to build mechan ical forg ing presses in a full range of sizes has been greatly enhanced w ith the completion of the world 's largest mec hanical forging press. Pictured here and on the front cover, it is a 12,000 ton machine that will be used to form large airfoils and other large complex parts at TRW Airfoi ls Division, Cleveland, Ohio. The press is 28'9" high from the floor to the top of the motor. Bed casting is 117"x180"x205" and alone weights 458,000 lbs. The gear shown here has a 208" 0. D. ERIE MECHANICAL FORGING PRESSES MEAN PRODUCTIVITY We 've refined the mechanical forging press to the point where it is truly a rugged, reliable piece of machinery. It is designed for heavy-duty service. Diameter of the main shafts is generally larger, and flywheel energy greater than conventional presses -..../ with the same rated tonnage. We 've given our mechanical forging press features that we believe will give you the kind of trouble-free forging you 're looking for. Cover p ho to courtesy o f T RW In c,

ERIE Mechanical Forging Press Exclusive Scotch Yoke SCOTCH YOKE OPERATION With ram at top of stroke (figure 1 ), Scotch Yoke is centered within the ram. As eccentric rotates, Scotch Yoke slides to extreme forward position and ram moves down on guides through half of its downward stroke (figure 2). Then as eccentric continues its rotation, the Scotch Yoke slides back half way in ram as ram reaches bottom of stroke (figure 3). Eccentric continues rotary motion, sliding Scotch Yoke to its extreme rear position as ram moves up on its guides half way returned to top of stroke (figure 4), then returning to top of stroke (figure 1 ). SCOTCH YOKE ADVANTAGES The Erie press will accept greater off-center loading because of the wide eccentric bearing area of the shaft and wide eccentric blocks, combined with Erie's guiding system. Scotch Yoke design permits a shorter, more rigid press with the frame members accepting stress more uniformly under load... closer forging tolerances being achieved. There is no wrist pin to wear or deflect as in conventional pitman arrangements. With Scotch Yoke design and larger press side windows- installation of automation is easier. Side manual feeding is also accomplished with greater ease. SCOTCH YOKE DESIGN Erie's Scotch Yoke design as applied to the mechanical forging press is one of the most compact and efficient ways of transmitting power and motion to the forging press ram. Combined with other Erie press features, this design provides for greater forging accuracy than that provided by other mechanical motion. Design is simple and rugged. It consists of a massive eccentric shaft that is fitted with a heavy, two-piece (top and bottom) eccentric block. The proportions of these components are extremely large. The eccentric block is fully contained within a rigid box formed by the ram and ram cap. This provides extremely large surfaces over which the forging forces are carried from the eccentric block to the ram, as well as large bearing areas for stripping tonnage, and to carry the weight of the top bolster, dies and ram during the upstroke. Major maintenance is less complicated- Scotch Yoke parts can be removed from the press by simply removing the ram covers and cap- the main eccentric shaft and ram remain in place in the press. 3

ERIE Mechanical Forging Press Features STEEL FRAME CD Frame is of steel construction, fully annealed, and accurately machined to accommodate all components. Side columns are designed with large cross sectional area to allow minimum stress at maximum tonnage. LOWER PRESS HEIGHT- MORE RIGIDITY (D Scotch Yoke design (see page 3) permits lower overall press height and thus a more rigid piece of machinery. This means that the frame columns will stretch less. proportionately, under a given load, and assures forging uniformity. MAIN GUIDE DESIGN PROMOTES G) FORGING ACCURACY The ram is guided at all four corners over its full height during its entire stroke. Guides are adjustable to compensate for wear. The main rear guides have been extended to a point nearer the part line of the dies than on conventional presses to assure greater forging accuracy. AUXILIARY GUIDES PROVIDE MORE ACCURACY-LOWER TOOLING COSTS In addition to the four full length conventional corner ram guides, Erie provides 2 auxiliary Vee guides at the back of the press. These guides engage as the ram approaches the bottom of its stroke, and are adjustable to compensate for wear. In addition, they are designed so that running clearance can be virtually eliminated at the bottom of the stroke. Forging accuracy is again maximized. The need for leader pins in the bolster is eliminated, which can reduce the cost of tooling for the press. GUIDE LINERS REMOVABLE WITH RAM IN PLACE When wear can no longer be offset by guide adjustment, all guideliners can be replaced without removing the ram, saving valuable time. RAM THRUST LINERS ADD STABILITY CD 4 ram thrust liners (2 top and 2 side) give additional stability and positioning accuracy as the ram comes in contact with work. RECIRCULATING OIL LUBRICATION CLEANS AND COOLS CRITICAL POINTS CONTINUOUSLY An automatic, motor-driven recirculating pressure lubrication system supplies oi l to the main and eccentric bearings, the upper eccentric block and guides (oil from guides is not recirculated). A cleaning and cooling action is maintained by the recirculating system. This extra degree of lubrication makes closer runnin g guide clearances possible and provides closer alignment of the ram, particularly during the more critical part of the work stroke. The main pressure area between the lower eccentric block face and inner ram is submerged in an oil bath at all times. All recirculated oil is filtered within the system. DUAL AIR SYSTEM PROVIDES FLEXIBILITY One air system is provided for operation of the brake and clutch... another for the counterbalance cylinders. This feature allows one system to be adjusted 6 CD independent of the other to meet the variable requirements of each forging situation. CLUTCH DESIGN GIVES AMPLE TORQUE(D Clutch is multi-plate, air engaged - spring release. It is mounted on the main shaft, either in the main gear or the flywheel, depending on design of the press. Greater torque is provided by the large diameter of the plates. These plates can be easily serviced without removing the main gear, flywheel or bearings mounted behind the clutch plates, making adjustment and maintenance easier to accomplish when required. BRAKE IS EXTRA LARGE CD The spring set-air release brake is a modified "band type" made of 3 -wide hinged steel sections for extra strength. The outside segments can be reversed to equalize lining wear. Adjustment can be made easily from floor level on most sizes. A disc type brake may be used on some press models to meet certain requirements when automation is included. MAIN ECCENTRIC SHAFT IS HIGH CD STRENGTH FORGING The main eccentric shaft is a solid, heat treated alloy steel forging. It is designed for increased strength at the main bearing journals. The eccentric is also wide than generally found in the conventional connectin9-.._/ rod or pitman design which, combined with our guiding, make the Erie press capable of handling greater off-center loading. DRIVE GEAR DESIGN MAKES CD SMOOTH OPERATION Both the main gear and pinion are heat treated-alloy steel. Both are reversible on their shafts (if this should ever be necessary). The main gear will accept the clutch parts on either side. Herringbone design makes gears quieter and smoother in operation. (Spur gearing is available if specified.) BOTTOM WEDGE (OPTIONAL) The Erie mechanical forging press is normally designed with a front-to-back moving wedge that provides up and down movement for die adjustment. On presses 1600 tons and over, a double wedge design is used. All models can also be made with a solid bed, if desired. LOWER KNOCKOUT CD Positive lower knockout with one (1) center K. 0. pin is standard. Adjustments are provided for both timing and dwell. TOP KNOCKOUT A top knockout can be included to suit customer application. OTHER OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES Bolsters can be furnished as required. Protection Instrument Package can provide for indicating and 1 or recording readings of critical press functions such as flywheel rpm, main drive motor amperage and bearing temperatures. Includes alarms to warn of unsafe operating conditions at the monitored.points.

Strain Monitoring (tonnage indicating) systems are also available. Power Wedge Adjustment An air-operated impact wrench eliminates need for hand adjustment of the wedge movement screw (die height adjustment). Lower Knockout Time Delay@ holds forging out of lower die cavity for a specified time for handling purposes. Mechanical-Pneumatic Transfer for automatic handling of forgings through the press Conveyor Package for transfer presses includes bil: let loading and feeding conveyors with reject chute, part discharge conveyor and flash removal conveyor. 4033 1758 7
