Thank you for purchasing the Axiom HydroForce bicycle training system. The Axiom HydroForce provides speed, distance, and time information normally available from a full-featured cycling computer, plus information on power output (expressed in watts), elevation gained, and percent grade. Your indoor training has never been more fun and more effective than it will be with your new Axiom HydroForce! Caution: Before you start any exercise program you should consult a physician. Quickstart Instructions (for those who do not like to read instruction manuals) While the HydroForce unit is ready to use right out of the box, please note that the slope percentage and elevation gained information is only accurate after you have entered your weight in the Setup screen. Please see section D, "Setup" on page 4 for details. A. About Your Axiom HydroForce System The Axiom HydroForce system consists of an adjustable fluid resistance unit with an integrated speed sensor, controlled by a handlebar-mounted lever, which is connected to a handlebar-mounted display screen. The system is compatible with either the Performance Travel Trac 2000 (or prior versions of the Travel Trac ) or the Performance Peakload trainer base. Adjustable Fluid Resistance Unit - This is a modified version of our popular AF500 Adjustable Fluid resistance unit. A sensor has been integrated into the unit, which sends data to the computer screen on your handlebar. The adjustable fluid unit will provide a wide range of resistance with the quiet, smooth feel of fluid. Handlebar-Mounted Shift Lever - Allows adjustment of the resistance level (which serves to simulate slope) while riding. Handlebar-Mounted Display Screen - This computer module takes data from the sensor on the resistance unit and the handlebar-mounted shift lever, displaying it on the LCD screen in a user-friendly format. Travel Trac or Peakload Trainer Base (not included) - The Axiom HydroForce system should be used in conjunction with a separately packaged trainer base. It is compatible with all Performance Travel Trac and Peakload bases, past and present. Performance trainer bases are extremely 1

stable; constructed of heavy-gauge powder-coated steel, with large, rubber, shock-absorbing feet. Either choice will provide the foundation for a quality workout. Functions - The Axiom HydroForce bicycle training system provides the following valuable training feedback: Speed - current, average, maximum Distance - trip, total (odometer) Time - ride time Power - current, average, maximum Percent Grade - current slope simulated by the level of resistance (please note that the percent grade at any specific setting will vary according to the rider s weight) Elevation Gain - elevation accumulated during the current ride (calculated from the percent grade) The system provides a fun, effective workout using your familiar bicycle in the comfort of your own home. Easily switched from bike to bike or between riders with no change in wheel circumference settings. Customize your workout as desired, and get all the feedback you need to have a great training program! B. Parts List a. Adjustable Fluid Resistance Unit with Integrated Sensor and Handlebar Mounted Shift Lever b. Control Unit/Display Screen c. Handlebar Clamp Assembly d. 1 / 2 " Self Tapping Screw e. Rubber Shim (2) f. Alkaline Batteries (2) - size AAA C. Assembly 1. Install the batteries into the back panel of the Control Unit (alkaline batteries only). Note the orientation of the batteries. 2. Install the Resistance Unit assembly onto the spring plate of your trainer using a 5mm hex wrench with the cable assembly to the left side (from the rider's perspective). See Figure 1. 2

5mm hex screws supplied with trainer spring plate Figure 1 3. Mount the handlebar clamp assembly to the back of the Control Unit, using any of the three mounting positions. See Figure 2. Figure 2 4. Mount the Control Unit onto your handlebar. It may be necessary to use a rubber shim inside the clamp to ensure that the unit does not rotate on the handlebar. 5. Mount the shift lever to the handlebar, preferably close to the stem. Use the same procedure as in mounting the Control Unit. Use care to mount the lever such that the shifter cable does not interfere with the operation of the bicycle or the resistance unit. 6. Plug the cables from the Resistance Unit and Shift Lever into the back of the control unit. 7. Mount your bicycle onto the trainer as recommended in your trainer instructions. Releasing the spring plate as recommended in your trainer instructions, allow the drive roller to contact the rear tire. Tip: To make your indoor workout quieter, set the trainer up on a small section of carpet. Also, the smoother the tire's tread pattern, the quieter the workout will be. 3

D. Set-Up To get accurate information from your Axiom HydroForce system you will need to perform the following simple procedure to choose units of measurement (Imperial or Metric) and to input your weight (necessary for accurate elevation gain and slope percentage calculations). Note: whenever another rider uses the unit, be sure to input his/her weight. 1. Get to the set-up screens from any of the three main screens by a short press of the Mode and Adjust buttons simultaneously. 2. The first set-up screen allows a choice between metric and imperial units of measure for elevation gain. Use the Adjust to toggle between meters and feet. When the preferred measurement is showing, press the mode button to progress to the next setup screen. On this screen you may choose between miles or kilometers per hour. Use the Adjust button to toggle between the two. When the preferred choice is showing, press Mode to progress to the next screen. Here you will choose between kilograms and pounds (lbs) as the unit of measurement for expressing your weight. Toggle between the two with the Adjust button, then press Mode to continue. 3. The next set-up screen is the first in a series of three screens which allow you to input your weight (for greatest accuracy, enter the total of your weight plus your bicycle s weight). In the first of the three screens you will enter the ones digit. The digit in the right-most position should be flashing. Use the Adjust button to edit the value of the digit in increments of one. When the correct value is showing, press the Mode button to advance to the second of the three weight-input screens. The tens digit should be highlighted. Use the Adjust button to edit the value. When the correct value is showing, press the Mode button to advance to the final weight input screen. The hundreds digit should be highlighted. Use the Adjust button to edit the value. When the correct value is showing, a final press of the Mode button exits the set-up sequence, returning you to main screen number one. See Figure 3. 4

E. Using Your Axiom HydroForce Trainer Once you've mounted your Axiom HydroForce unit to the trainer (see section C ), and performed the initial setup on the computer (see section D ), you are ready to ride. To activate the computer screen press either button or begin pedaling. The display should immediately show your speed and other data. Adjust the resistance level (simulated grade percentage) with the shift lever. Pulling the lever toward you will increase the resistance level. Note: Slope percentage readings will vary from rider to rider for the same resistance level setting based on the weight entered in the Setup procedure (see page 4). The shown values for each resistance level will be pre-determined dependent on your weight and are not adjustable. Screens - Three main screens provide various training data as shown below. Use the Mode button to move between the three main screens. Screen 1 - Current Values Screen 1 - Provides current values for Power (watts), Speed, Elevation Gain, and either Distance or Ride Time. Toggle between Distance and Ride Time (positioned in the lower left corner) by pressing the Adjust button. Also shown on this screen is a graphical representation of your resistance level. The bike rider icon is positioned on one of five levels of incline, representing each of the five possible resistance/grade levels. The + or - sign in the lower right corner of the screen compares your current speed to your average speed at that point for this ride. OR 6

Screen 2 - Average Values Screen 2 - Access from Screen 1 by pressing the Mode button. Displays average values for Power (watts) and Speed. Displays either Distance or Ride Time - toggle between the two by pressing the Adjust button. Screen 2 also shows the percent grade at which you are currently working. As with Screen 1, the bike rider icon serves as a position indicator, showing which of the five levels of resistance/incline you are working in. The percent grade is a numeric representation of this resistance level position. Also as in Screen 1, the + or - sign in the lower right corner of the screen compares your current speed to your average speed for this ride. OR Screen 3 - Maximum Values Screen 3 - Access from Screen 2 by pressing the Mode button. Provides maximum values for Power (watts) and Speed. Total Distance (odometer) is shown on this screen. This value accumulates all distance ridden while the system is on. It does not reset when all current values are cleared. (See "Reset", page 8.) The bike rider icon/position indicator shows up again on Screen 3, as does Elevation Gain for the current ride (this value is not cumulative). Press the Mode button again to return to Screen 1. 7

Battery Life - Directly above the first resistance position is an icon indicating battery life. When battery life is at approximately 1 hour remaining, the battery icon will appear blinking on the screen, indicating that the batteries should be changed. Reset - On subsequent rides you ll want to clear (reset) values left in memory from your last ride before you start. Do this by simultaneously pressing and holding both buttons. After 3 seconds, "CLEAR" will be displayed, and in another 3 seconds, the accumulated ride data (except Total Distance) will be cleared when "CLEAR" is complete "DONE" will appear. Reset clears all accumulated data except Total Distance. Auto Off - After 2 minutes of continuous idleness the system will automatically switch off. Current values will be maintained. To turn the system back on press either button or begin pedaling. F. Troubleshooting A. Display not working - Check the following: 1. Check cable connections to the control box. 2. Replace the batteries in the display box. See instructions in section G. B. Data Values Erratic - Check the following: 1. Check cable connections to the control box. 2. Replace the batteries in the display box. A low battery can cause erratic readings. See instructions in section G. C. Difficulty Shifting the Resistance Unit with the Remote - Check the following: 1. The shift cable can be adjusted at the connection with the resistance unit. If adjustment seems necessary, simply screw or unscrew the adjuster assembly as needed. With the lever in the forward-most position (lowest resistance) there should be no slack in the (inner) cable. See Figure 4. adjuster assembly Figure 4 8

2. The lever assembly friction has been preset at the factory. If, however, the lever wants to return to the forward-most position on its own, tighten the bolt with a 5mm hex wrench as needed. Do not overtighten. D. Battery Indicator in Screens 1 and 2 Appears Replace the batteries in the display box. See instructions in section G. G. Changing the Batteries The handlebar-mounted display uses 2 AAA batteries. Screens 1 and 2 display a battery charge indicator in the top left quarter of the screen. The flashing battery icon indicates that new batteries are needed. Erratic display and/or no display are also indications new batteries are needed. To change the battery, remove the display assembly from your handlebar. Turn the assembly over. Remove the battery cover. Remove and properly discard the used batteries. Place new AAA size alkaline batteries in the case, lining up the positive and negative ends with the + and - indicators on the case. Replace the battery cover, and remount the case on your handlebar. Press either button or begin pedaling to turn on the unit. After installing new batteries, the unit will display screen #1. Note: When you replace the batteries in your HydroForce unit the existing odometer reading and setup screen values will be maintained in memory. H. Caution: 1. The resistance unit cooling fins become very hot during use. Avoid touching the unit and keep children away from the unit during and immediately after using it. 2. The resistance unit and the handlebar-mounted control unit contain no user-serviceable parts. The warranty is void if either unit is opened. 9
