Avtron Model M Rotary Pulse Generator Easy to Install Cost Effective Rugged Construction High Resolution Versatile ISO 9001 QUALITY SYSTEM CERTIFIED
Model M Rotary Pulse Generator DESCRIPTION The Avtron M is a Digital Rotary Pulse Generator specifically designed to provide precise, accurate, reliable feedback to drive systems and process control systems in today s industrial world. The M combines features from more expensive heavy mill duty designs into a cost effective package. Because of its versatility, it can be used in a wide variety of applications and industries. It can be both a NEMA 56C FACE MOUNTED pulse generator with a 5/8" diameter shaft (Fig. 1), or a HOLLOW unit for a more universal mount on shafts Figure 1 Solid Shaft up to 2 /8" in diameter. (Fig 2). The M can be used as a feedback device in AC and DC drive applications, or for instrumentation purposes into process computers, speed meters, or programmable logic controllers. It has been tested to withstand the electrically noisy environment created by high frequency AC drives. An optional SECOND ISOLATED OUTPUT allows users to send a signal to two different locations. One can be used for drive feedback and the other can be used for instrumentation purposes, or as an on hand spare. TRANSDUCER The M has a high resolution incremental output of up to 2048 pulses per revolution (PPR). It uses a photoelectric sensing circuit for precise resolution and accuracy. The code wheel is a metal disk, not glass or plastic, for maximum reliability. ENCLOSURE The rugged design of the M makes it perfect for virtually all industrial applications in the paper, metals, textiles, plastics, and converting industries. The enclosure seals out contamination in dusty or damp environments. The rugged cast housing will stand up to the conditions and handling usually found in these industries. Motor manufacturers have spent many years improving the performance of standard, cast iron, industrial motors. The pulse generator that is used with these motors should be equal to the task. The M does just that. Applications Three styles of M available, depending on application NEMA 56C FACE MOUNTING On motors equipped with a 4.5" adapter flange, the M will mount directly on the C-Face and couple to the motor using a standard coupling ADAPTER FLANGE (Fig ). The M can update or replace any NEMA 56C M face mounted device, including many older styles FLEXIBLE COUPLING of Avtron Pulse Generators like the Figure NEMA 56C Flange Mounting M77A. When used in conjunction with a frequency to voltage converter like the Avtron Model K661, it can replace analog tachometers like the BC46, BC42, and RE210. HOLLOW MOUNTING MOTOR FOOT MOUNTING The M, can be directly coupled to motors and shafts without a machined C-Face, by using the foot mounting bracket. This bracket has a footprint that matches other Avtron heavy mill duty pulse generators. The advantage of this bracket is that you only need to align the bracket once and mount the M on its C-Face. If replacement of the M is needed, simply remove the M from the C-Face bracket and install a spare. No realignment is required (Fig 4). The hollow shaft capability of the M makes it perfect for a wide variety of special mounting applications. With the hollow shaft configuration, no C-Faces, couplings, or adapter flanges are required. On new motors, this greatly reduces the overall installed cost when compared to other styles of pulse generators. The M can Figure 5 TEFC with Shaft Mounted Tach Outboard be mounted on shafts ranging in size from 0.625" to 2.75" in diameter. With this large diameter capability, the Figure 6 TENV with Shaft Mounted M M can be used on large frame motors without the need for a specially engineered stub shaft. The actual non-drive end motor shaft can be used. Figure 7 TENV with Brake and Shaft Mounted Tach (Outboard) For standard AC motor mounting, the M can be mounted outboard of Totally Enclosed, Fan-Cooled (TEFC) motors (Fig 5), on Totally Enclosed, Non-Ventilated (TENV) motors (Fig 6), on motors equipped with disk brakes (Fig 7), and inboard of fans on motors with separate ventilation (Fig 8). Installation Hollow Shaft Installation Sequence Easy as 1 Install Stub Shaft 2 Slide M onto Shaft and Tighten Collar Install Torque Arm No Testing Needed No Special Tools No Mounting Flanges or Couplings INSTALLATION Because the M is fully self contained, there are no complicated alignment procedures required. Simply slide the M onto the shaft, tighten the clamping collar, and connect the anti-rotational bracket to the back of the motor. The M does not depend on precise motor tolerances or C-Faces to operate. Even on motors equipped with machined C-Faces, the Shaft Mounted M has advantages because it eliminates coupling and bearing problems associated with the misalignment of shafts and couplings. UPGRADES The hollow shaft mounting is also very effective for retrofits of existing motors when drive systems are upgraded and the older motors are retained. A complete inventory of shaft adapters to convert just about any motor for M compatibility is available from Avtron. GROUNDING KIT The M can be equipped with an integral shaft grounding brush. Shaft grounding brushes have been shown to be effective in reducing motor bearing problems associated with stray shaft currents. The M shaft grounding brush is actually part of the M and rides directly on the M shaft. No modifications are needed to the motor shaft to use the M with the shaft grounding option. The shaft grounding option is available on both solid and hollow shaft designs.
