New Leaf Biofuel, LLC Fuel to Grow on Jennifer Case 619.236.8500
Overview New Leaf Biofuel is a woman-owned biodiesel manufacturer Since 2006, New Leaf has been collecting used cooking oil from San Diego county restaurants and processing the oil into biodiesel, an alternative cleaner-burning fuel that can be used in any diesel engine without modification Plant located in Barrio Logan. Funded by a grant from CARB, and a loan from City of San Diego s technology fund New Leaf s goal is to tranform the way companies fuel their fleets by displacing the current use of petro-diesel with biodiesel, with emphasis on Southern California. Our waste-to-fuel program focusses on sustainability, and supporting the local economy.

Sustainable Biodiesel What is Sustainable Biodiesel? Sustainable biodiesel is biodiesel that is produced in a manner that, on a lifecycle basis, minimizes the generation of pollution, including greenhouse gases; reduces competition for, and use of, natural resources and energy; reduces waste generation; preserves habitat and ecosystems; maintains or improves soils; avoids use of genetically modified organisms; and provides community economic benefit that results in jobs and fair labor conditions. --Sustainable biodiesel alliance
Sustainability Factors In simple terms, sustainability is the ability to meet the present needs without compromising the needs of future generations. For biodiesel, sustainability is related to fuel quality, feedstock diversification and production efficiency.
Not all Biodiesel is Created Equal While many factors afect biodiesel s sustainability, the choice of feedstock is most crucial Biodiesel from virgin feedstocks such as soy and palm are being studied for their long term environmental impact Biodiesel made from recycled resources, such as used cooking oil, is extremely sustainable (cuts out transportation for feedstocks, and the energy used in growing crops) Our own collection trucks run on 100% biodiesel
Energy Inputs Energy inputs for biodiesel processing also impact biodiesel s sustainability index. New Leaf Biofuel derives the heat for our process from a boiler that runs on biodiesel We are also working with the City of San Diego to use federal funds to install a cogeneration system It is estimated that cooking oil biodiesel facilities have a 7:1 energy output (as compared to 4:1 for virgin plants)
Quality Control Fuel Quality is crucial for consumer confidence in biodiesel. The fuel must achieve ASTM quality, or it is not sustainable. A classic misconception is that biodiesel from recycled materials is an inferior product when in fact, a simple an extra engineering step is all that is necessary. New Leaf has a strict quality assurance program that ensures only top quality fuel is released into the market.
The Future Like energy, biodiesel feedstocks will have to come from diverse sources in the future Promising research is being done in the field of algae. Alage is thought of as leading next generation sustainable biodiesel feedstock
