Description of New/Revised Technical Requirements -- -- Add requirements for USB and POE Portable Luminaires 1.2.1 Info These requirements also cover portable luminaires intended to receive power through a USB connection, or power over ethernet (POE) using category 5 (CAT5) or similar cables and connectors. -- -- Revised requirement for portable luminaires intended for use without a shade Additions to existing requirements are underlined and deletions are shown lined out below. A portable luminaire shall be shipped with a shade unless: 16.1 a) The shade functions only as a decorative part and instructions are provided in accordance with 219.1.1; and 219.1.1 219.1.2 b) The design is not intended for use with a shade and instructions are provided in accordance with 219.1. 219.1.2; or c) The design is not intended for and has no means to readily attach a shade. When a portable luminaire is not provided with a shade in accordance with 16.1(a), it shall be marked in Form C with instructions for providing a shade usable for the marked maximum wattage and lamp type of the incandescent type unit that was temperature tested or in the lamp-to-shade dimensions specified in Temperature Test-Exempt Units, Section 49. A portable luminaire with instant-start ballast(s) and incorporating bi-pin lampholders shall: 42.3.1 a) Be constructed with a ballast(s) identified as Type CC, or b) Be constructed with lampholders intended for use with instant-start electronic ballasts in accordance with Components, Section 4. Lampholders marked with a circle I comply with these requirements. -- -- Add requirements for overcurrent protection 46A Overcurrent Protection 46A.1 Overcurrent protection, where required, shall either be a circuit breaker, a fuse, or an electronic circuit determined to be reliable when evaluated in accordance with the Standard for Automatic Electrical Controls Part 1: General Requirements, UL 60730-1, including Requirements for Electronic Controls, Annex H. 46A.2 A fuseholder shall be of a type that prevents insertion of a fuse larger than that required for compliance with this standard. -- -- Add requirements for button and coin batteries 47.4.1 A portable luminaire that incorporates a button or coin cell lithium batteries shall comply with the accessibility requirements of the Standard for Products Incorporating Button or Coin Cell Batteries of Lithium Technologies, UL 4200A. -- -- Add requirements for instant-start ballast and lampholder compatibility New clause added; A portable luminaire with instant-start ballast(s) and bi-pin lampholders shall use only: 61.1.2 a) Ballast(s) marked as Type CC and that comply with Supplement SD of the Standard for Fluorescent-Lamp Ballasts, UL 935, or b) Lampholders marked with a circle I and that comply with Supplement SD of the Standard for Lampholders, UL 496. -- -- Add requirements for portable luminaires marked Suitable for Damp Locations -- -- 129A 129A.1 New sections added; DAMP LOCATION USE SUPPLEMENTARY General The requirements in Sections 129A 129D apply to portable luminaires marked Suitable for damp locations. 129A.2 These requirements are supplementary to other applicable requirements in this standard. 129B Construction The portable luminaire shall comply with the requirements in Corrosion Protection, 129B.1 Section 131.3, as applicable to wet location products. The screw shell in a screw shell-type lampholder shall not be constructed of unplated 129B.2 aluminum. Nonabsorptive electrical insulation shall be used in the construction of electrical components where it is relied upon to provide electrical spacings or sole support of live 129B.3 electrical parts or to provide electrical insulation. Untreated fiber and similar material shall not be used; while treated cellulosic fiber, phenolic, urea, porcelain, and similar material, are examples of materials that meet the intent of the requirement. 129C Tests Portable luminaires intended for damp locations shall be: a) Subjected to the Resistance to Moisture Test, Section 161, and b) If provided with a polymeric enclosure, comply with the Resistance to Impact test of the Standard for Polymeric Materials Use in Electrical Equipment Evaluations, UL 746C, using a preconditioning temperature of 0 ±2 C (32 ± 3.6 F). 129D 129D.1 214.3 214A 214A.1 216.3 Info Exception: Portable luminaires supplied by a remote Class 2 power unit circuit are not subject to these tests. Markings A damp location type unit shall comply with the markings specified in Damp Location Use, Section 214A. It shall not be provided with any information such as markings, instructions, or illustrations that implies or depicts wet location use. A work light that does not comply with the wet location or damp location use requirements shall be marked in Form A-3 Dry Location Use. Damp Location Use A portable luminaire that complies with Sections 129A 129D is eligible to be marked in Form A-1 Suitable for Damp Locations. A portable hand light shall be marked CAUTION Risk of Electric Shock Use In Dry Locations Only; or equivalent. Exception: Portable hand lamps complying with the wet location requirements of Sections 130 135, or the damp location requirements of Sections 129A 129D. -- -- Revised requirement for tungsten halogen overlamping test method Additions to existing requirements are underlined and deletions are shown lined out below. 165.7.1 -- -- 223.2.3 A portable luminaire is to be operated in a position of normal use with a lamp rated 500 watts or the maximum wattage lamp of the same type specified in the lamp replacement marking that physically fits into the unit and is generally available through retail channels. However, when the lamp is energized through a transformer, the test is to be conducted with the highest wattage lamp that does not result in transformer burnout in 7 hours, or does not result in a protective device functioning. The lamp type shall be of the same type specified in the lamp replacement marking. For example, a portable luminaire intended for use with a medium base Type PAR38 lamp shall be tested with a Type PAR 38 lamp. Other commonly available similar lamp types (i.e. a smaller par lamp) shall also be used for this test. Revised requirement for cord length, markings, and installation instructions for portable cabinet lights When the temperature on the external surface of the closed top portable cabinet light during the normal temperature test exceeds 90 C (194 F) but not higher than 150 C (302 F), as permitted by the Exception to 146.3.1(c), the unit shall be marked in Form C CAUTION: Risk Of Fire. Install only in closed top cabinets. Not intended for blind recessed installation. Maintain a minimum 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) air gap between the top of the light and the cabinet surface above or equivalent.
