This is a particular problem with power generated from renewable energy sources such as solar or wind. Put simply, when there is no sun or wind, there is no power available to be generated. In order to bridge the gap between exploiting power availability at times that cannot be readily predicted and delivering sufficient power at times of demand, AEG Power Solutions has developed a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) solution. Electrical energy can be stored in any number of ways, with new technological solutions being almost continuously developed. These can range from a wide variety of storage solutions including chemical storage (batteries), pumped-hydro, flywheel and hydrogen electrolysis as ways of converting or securing energy for use in the near future. Already today, batteries alone provide a huge number of technologies ranging from fully-developed to experimental. The challenges The major challenge is not just in providing power on demand, but in ensuring that a balanced load is always available to the end consumer. To achieve this, AEG PS has set itself the goal to create a versatile solution that can be used on-grid as well as off-grid, be available in a wide range of capacities and power outputs and that will still be as energy efficient as possible. Business and environmental challenges Today, it is very important for businesses to reduce and stabilize costs wherever possible. For industrial applications and processes, energy efficiency is becoming the main focus of attention. In order to meet this challenge, businesses often fix the price that they pay for energy for a designated maximum load. Exceeding this maximum load, even for a short period of time, can prove very expensive. In addition, even the shortest interruption to the supply of energy can have catastrophic consequences for production plants in terms of lost working hours, production quality and financial loss. In modern marketing, especially for companies in a consumer market, it is very important to reflect a positive image to the customer. AEG Power Solutions BESS, in combination with renewable energy sources, not only helps to create a green image, but in addition, can also help to de-couple energy consumption from rising electricity prices and therefore save money in the long-term.
3 The benefits Through BESS, AEG PS provides an energy storage system to meet the needs of a quickly changing energy market. It provides a high degree of availability, reliability and built-in flexibility to make every solution available almost regardless of application. A turnkey, easily-delivered solution that can be adjusted to meet the specific needs of any customer was set as a high priority as was the ability to be easily configured in parallel with other modules. For microgrid applications the ability to readily handle a black start situation was also important. Finally, the solution is free of emissions and able to improve the CO 2 footprint to ensure future legislative compatibility. 6 AEG Power Solutions On-grid competence For on-grid projects, AEG Power Solutions is focusing most of its efforts to begin dealing with the changes anticipated in global energy markets. With the decommissioning of all German nuclear power plants scheduled for 2022 and the goal of having 80 % of Germany s electricity generated through renewable energy by 2050, AEG PS is gaining a lot of experience of on-grid connection within its domestic market. The great danger of largescale disruption to power generation and supply offers a new challenge for AEG PS to work together hand in hand with both small and large energy providers to help stabilize the grid. AEG Power Solutions BESS not only helps to stabilize the frequency, it can also regulate the voltage through reactive power compensation/ supply and provide balancing power, with virtually no delay, until the power plants for primary balancing power have been started. Tried and proven technology Using their tried and proven technologies, that are currently employed throughout the grid network, AEG Power Solutions is well-placed to deliver smart solutions for connecting BESS technology to any grid for use in many areas, for example in: Peak shaving Peak demand shifting Frequency regulation Load leveling Load leveling Peak demand shifting Typical on-grid connection of BESS
7 Future Proof Energy storage solutions Current energy storage systems There are many battery technologies available, such as lithium-ion, lead-acid, NiCd, Vanadium Redox-Flow, sodium-sulphur or ZEBRA. In general, AEG Power Solutions BESS is already able to use any battery technology that the customer requests today. However, at the moment AEG PS focuses on lead-acid and lithium-ion technologies. Lithium-ion batteries are recommended for high power applications and lead-acid batteries for high capacity applications. Lead-acid batteries cannot be charged at the same rate as lithium-ion batteries, but their discharging behavior is equivalent. Lead-acid batteries are a proven technology, their main advantages continue to be their low price, high availability and simplicity. Lithium-ion batteries offer high energy density, do not suffer from memory effect and are low maintenance. Future energy storage systems In the future, AEG PS looks forward to the incorporation of high-capacity flow battery technology into BESS. Flow batteries are rechargeable fuel cells where the electrolyte is stored in an external tank and then pumped or gravity-fed through the cells of a reactor. The advantages offered by flow batteries include rapid recharging and nearly unlimited capacity. 8 AEG Power Solutions Off-grid competence Concentrating our efforts on the sun-belt countries, where solar insolation is deemed very high, AEG Power Solutions is already working in South Africa, Australia and the Pacific island nations. The focus is on photovoltaic/ BESS combinations of technology to power specific applications (e.g. mobile telephone service solutions in New Caledonia) or batteryaided grid connection of PV applications (e.g. Pacific island groups) to deliver additional short-term power at peak usage times. We are also working with a number of remote mining companies in Africa where it is more economical to install a BESS system when public funding or a grid connection is not available. Off-grid bringing power to remote areas AEG Power Solutions also concentrates its efforts on supplying electricity to remote areas of the world. BESS is ideally suited to, and has been specifically designed for use in off-grid applications. The limits of BESS as the solution of choice for off-grid power supply are limited only by imagination. Typical industrial off-grid application of BESS Whether it is a power supply for a remote mining, communications or industrial location, or for a domestic power supply, BESS is available to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels for power generation. Globally, reliable electrical power is one of the most important resources for growth in every country. One of the big issues is how to deliver clean, safe power to remote areas. Conventional solutions are usually centered around diesel generators as the power generation source of choice, but with the costs escalating for transportation, as well as for the fuel itself, other primary sources of electricity generation are becoming increasingly attractive.
9 Current off-grid electrification Existing off-grid electrification typically includes a diesel generator providing the power. This conventional solution is, at first sight, economical, but is becoming less viable as a long-term solution. With diesel there are major challenges, often due to difficult access in remote areas: Reliability of generator due to 100 % operation Availability of diesel fuel Availability of spare parts and trained engineers for maintenance Renewable energy sources are environmentally friendly, low maintenance and highly efficient, with a long operating life and comparably low operating expenses. Overcoming the challenges In an effort to overcome the challenges involved in making renewable energy sources as consistent as diesel, AEG Power Solutions engineers have designed BESS for use in conjunction with multiple power sources, in particular, renewable energy sources. Off-grid power operators are seeking: Lower fossil fuel consumption Reduced operating and capital costs Fewer onsite maintenance visits The off-grid business case A very critical factor of the generator operating cost is the increasing price of crude oil and consequently the price of fuel at a national level. Diesel generator Because a diesel engine runs nearly 24 hours per day, it must be replaced periodically or given a thorough general overhaul. The running costs or variable costs of the generator option are added onto the annual cost of the investment alongside monthly maintenance, spare parts, fuel, refilling, transportation of fuel, oil and cleaning. PV power supply Over an investment period of 20 years, PV turns out to be approximately half as expensive as a diesel generator solution: Less fuel costs Low maintenance costs Lower dependency on oil prices Less environmental pollution Very reliable, using long life components Wind energy Optionally, a wind generator can be added, which further reduces reliance on diesel generation of electricity, consequently leading to reductions in diesel generator sizing and investment, and the attached variable operating expenses. Energy storage BESS combined with the use of renewable energy sources can be a cost-effective and reliable alternative. AEG Power Solutions BESS has a black start capability and can help to stabilize and build up a microgrid in an energy-efficient way.
