Attach a dial gauge as shown in the illustration, and then measure the end play while moving the hub in the axial direction. When removing the inner race (outside) from the hub, be careful not to let the hub drop. nner race MB99938 (3) nstall the inner race (outside) that was removed from the hub to the wheel bearing, and then use the special tools to remove the wheel bearing. (2) Apply a thin coating of multipurpose grease to the knuckle and bearing contact surfaces. (3) Press-in the bearing by using the special tools. Press the outer race when pressing-in the wheel bearing.,b+ OUTER OL SEAL NSTALLATON (1) Drive the oil seal (hub side) into the knuckle by using the special tool until it is flush with the knuckle end surface. (2) Apply multipurpose grease to the lip of the oil seal and to the surfaces of the oil seal which contact the front hub. FRONT AXLE - Axle Hub 26-1 1 MB99685 (4) Measure the wheel bearing breakaway torque (hub breakaway torque) by using the special tools. Limit: 1.8 Nm (15.62 in. bs.) or less (5) The breakaway torque must be within the limit and, in addition, the bearing must not feel rough when rotated. All SO45 MB99998 (6) Measure to determine whether the end play of the hub is within the specified limit or not. Limit:.5 mm (.2 in.) (7) f the breakaway torque and hub end play are not within the limit range while the nut is tightened to 177-275 Nm (13-23 fllbs.), the bearing, hub and/or knuckle have probably not been installed correctly. Be careful not to damage the transaxle oil seal by the spline of the drive shaft. 4. Be careful not to damage the ABS rotor attached to the R.J. outer race <Vehicles with ABS>. Using the special tool, tighten the drive shaft nut. Before securely tightening the drive shaft nuts, make sure there is no load on the wheel bearings. f the position of the cotter pin holes does not match, tighten the nut up to 275 Nm (23 ft.lbs.) maximum. nstall the cotter pin in the first matching holes and bend it securely. x NSPECTON 2613663 Check the drive shaft boot for damage or deterioration. CASE NSTALLATON (1) Apply the specified grease furnished in the repair kit to the spider assembly between the spider axle and the roller. Specified grease: Repair kit grease 1. The drive shaft joint uses special grease. Do not mix old and new or different types of grease. 2. f the spider assembly has been cleaned, take special care to apply the specified grease. (2) nstall the spider assembly to the shaft from the direction of the spline bevelled section. (3) After applying the specified grease to the T.J. case, insert the drive shaft and apply grease one more time. Specified grease: Repair kit grease Amount to use: 125 f 1 g (4.41 2.35 2.) NOTE The grease in the repair kit should be divided in half for use, respectively, at the joint and inside the boot. The drive shaft joint uses special grease. Secure the drive shaft in an upright position and clamp the part of the R.J. boot band to be crimped securely in the jaws of the special tool. 2. Crimp the R.J. boot band until the special tool touches the stopper. i 1 xo127 3421 (7) Check that the crimping amount (6) of the R.J. boot band is at the standard value. Standard value (B): 1. - 1.5 mm (.39 -.59 in.) <f the crimping amount is larger than 1.5 mm (.59 in.)> Readjust the value of (W) in step (4) according to the following formula, and then repeat the operation in step (6). W = 3. mm (.18 in.) - B Example: f B = 1.6 mm (.63 in.), then W = 1.4 mm (.55 in.). <f the crimping amount is smaller than 1. mm (.39 in.)> Remove the R.J. boot band, readjust the value of (W) in step (4) according to the following formula, and then repeat the operations in steps (5) and (6) using a new R.J. boot band.
