The Slowest was probably Dave Thacker s Wright Flyer, which he flew several times to great response from the crowd. That s Radical Dave of Radical RC, and I think he sold all of his kits before the week was out. Article written by: Greg Gimlick ATTENTION Have you renewed your 2013 Wingmasters Membership if not this could be your last issue of the 2013 Tailspins Newsletter. I have updated my email mailing list and we currently have 45 members for the 2013 season, so starting in April if you have not paid your membership dues you will no longer be sent the Newsletter. It will still be posted on line but may not contain all the information that the Wingmasters members issue has in it. TAILSPINS Page 1
February Meeting Minutes 02/07/2013, Montgomery County Fairgrounds, 7:30 PM Field Report : Old Business : Attended by 26 members and one guest. Santiago reported that he had been down to the field recently and that it was in good shape other than the wrap around the shelter was beginning to come loose in several places. Joe Saylor reported that he had been in touch with AMA officials and the word is if Sinclair students show up wanting to use our field for UAV training, they are not allowed to fly. Joe will send a letter to this effect to the Sinclair representative. New Business : Currently the only events that we officially apply for AMA sanctioning are Modelrama, Santiago's heli event, and maybe the 'Hobbies for Hospice" event (unsure about the last one). Joe is looking into getting info from AMA on what we need to do sanctioning some of our other activities. Dave Thacker reported that with Modelrama being only a couple of days away, we have 186 tables reserved and Paul Stimmel reported that 1148 people have viewed the RC Universe ad. Setup will be at 5 pm Friday evening with pizza to follow. Wingmaster members are asked to report at 6 am Saturday morning to help with vendor unloading which will begin at 6:30. Doors will officially open at 9 am. Looks like we can expect to have our biggest event ever. Mark Camden and Tom Whitridge displayed several items from Steve Whitridge's estate and mentioned that they will be offered for sale on the Club Table during Modelrama but wanted to give club members first chance at them after the meeting. All proceeds will go to Steve's widow. $25.00 Gift Certificate Winners: $25 winner - Bob Bush Treasurer Report: None Available Show and Tell: Paul Stimmel showed a Blade MQX Quadra copter. Santiago flew it around the room without hitting anyone. Gene Webb showed a Waco that he has been scratch building over the last 8 months. It is still a work in progress but getting close to being done. Gene offered a hint that builders should consider using "Ultracote" and not "Monocote". Bob Bush displayed a new A4 Sky Hawk jet that he has been working on for over a year. It contains several unique features including hydraulic landing gear and speed brakes. As far as anyone knows, this is the first time hydraulics has been used in a model plane. When finished, which is still a couple of months away, the plane will weigh 43-45 pounds and be capable of flying in excess of 200 mph. He plans to have it completed in time to compete at the Toledo show and from what we saw at the meeting, other contenders might as well stay home. They won't stand a chance against Bob's beauty. Meeting Closed at approximately 8:15 PM. TAILSPINS Page 2
From the President s Desk This is the time of year to look over the hangar and go over your stable of aircraft. It always seems like during the busy flying season, you push the models aside that need maintenance for the winter and fly the ole reliable ones. It s time to take advantage of the times that there is snow on the ground and look over your models with a fine toothed comb. I usually make a checklist per model in advance so I don t forget something to look at. Receiver packs even though they are a necessity. Last winter, I forgot to add receiver packs to my checklist, and it almost cost me one of my favorite planes. Luckily when I was tuning the motor on the flight stand, right before flying it.. The pack gave out. That was a wake up call to me to go over every plane that has a receiver pack and either verify that they are ok, or just totally replace them. It s an expense that no one likes, because it s not a new cool plane new motors or anything like that. But it s a needed item that could cost you plenty if you overlook it. I would also like to thank the hard work and dedication of all the hard working members that participated in this year s Midwest Modelrama. A big Thank You goes out to the CD s Jack Thompson and Dave Thacker, Lisa at Radical RC, and all the Wingmasters that showed up at set-up Friday night. All the way through to the final tear down and cleanup. It was a great event, well attended and I saw a lot of deals being transacted. Thanks and Have a great Month! See you at the meeting at the fairgrounds! Joe Saylor President Dayton Wingmasters 2013 ModelRama Deals Were you lucky enough to score any great buys at this years event? ModelRama Re-Cap What a year for the ModelRama! If you remember 2012, the weather was brutally cold and we had about a dozen people with table reservations that did not show up. This year the weather smiled on us, it wasn't too terribly cold and driving conditions were predicted to be good and they were. It felt to me as though we had a slightly larger crowd. Only a few of our 189 table registrations did not show which is to be expected. In replacement of those, we had a good number of people show up looking for tables. I'm quite sure we had merchandise on around 195 tables this year. Remember when we started in this location, only using about 75% of it the first year. Now we've filled it up. Perhaps by arranging the room a little differently we could get up to around 210-225 or so tables setup. I want to thank everybody for all the help. Each year the event runs smoother. Each year we get the tables setup faster. It is the quality group effort that keeps people returning again and again. Can you remember back when we had the union hall maxxed out with 80 tables? If our steady growth continues, we should see a 200+ table year in the next 1 or 2 years. Dave Thacker ModelRama Co-CD PS, Can we afford to put in a water fountain now? ;-) TAILSPINS Page 4
