Document No. 550-00 TEC Actuator Package AUTOZERO MODULE (OPTIONAL) CABLE TIE TEC00R BASE-PLATE Figure. TEC Actuator Package, with Optional Autozero Module. DO NOT CUT CABLE TIE FASTENED AROUND ACTUATOR Cable tie (Figure ) must be left in place until AFTER the actuator set screw has been tightened and the TEC Actuator Package has been screwed in place on the mounting surface. Product Description The TEC Actuator Package consists of a Terminal Equipment Controller, a Siemens OpenAir GDE series electronic actuator, and if required, an Autozero Module (AZM). Components are factory mounted on a common base-plate with all connections in place (Figure ). The shipping carton includes the TEC Actuator Package, two self-tapping screws, a hex wrench, and a metal insert for damper shafts measuring /8-inch (8-0 mm) in diameter. NOTE: These instructions include a section near the end on replacing the actuator. Parts for CE Compliance Product Description 550-705 Clamp-on ferrite filter (0 pack) 588-00 series Approved -RJ RTS cable in 5-inch, 50-inch, or 00-inch (7.6-m, 5.-m, 0.48-m). 550-00 Large Equipment Controller Enclosure Required Tools /4-inch hex nut driver Electric drill and /8-inch ( mm) drill bit (or other bit size) if self-tapping screws are not used Small, flat-blade screwdriver 4-mm hex wrench (supplied) Torque wrench Pencil Pliers Ruler (or something to measure diameter of damper shaft) Wire cutters Caution Notation Prerequisites Page of 7 Equipment damage may occur if you do not follow a procedure as specified. All wiring must conform to NEC and local codes and regulations. The mounting screws provided are designed for common sheet metal duct surfaces. Have appropriate mounting hardware on hand if another surface is used. NOTE: If the controller is being installed on a box with or more stages of electric heat, the 550-809 MOV with pre-terminated spade connectors must be installed across the manufacturer-supplied airflow switch. MOVs can be installed at the time the controller is factory-mounted; coordinate with the box manufacturer prior to order placement. For field installation, see Metal Oxide Varistor Kit (540-986). Protect the TEC Actuator Package from metal shavings when drilling holes in the enclosure or mounting surface. Metal shavings can severely damage the controller. Expected Installation Time 8 minutes Instructions For actuator replacement, see Actuator Replacement section later in these instructions. DO NOT cut the cable tie (Figure ) that secures the actuator until step 8.. Determine the damper shaft diameter. Do one of the following: If it measures /-inch ( to 4 mm), skip to step. If it is not /-inch ( to 4 mm), remove the black plastic guide piece from the hub of the actuator (Figure ). NOTE: If necessary, you may destroy the guide piece in order to remove it.. Do one of the following: If the shaft diameter measures /8-inch (8 to0 mm), install the metal insert into the actuator hub (Figure ). If the shaft diameter measures 5/8-inch (5 to7 mm), no insert is necessary. The metal insert MUST be used if the damper shaft diameter equals /8-inch. Using pliers if necessary, rotate the damper shaft counterclockwise until it fully stops. Mark the end of the shaft for reference if it is not already marked.. Confirm that the actuator s adjustment lever is also in counterclockwise position; adjust if necessary (Figure 4).
The TEC circuit board and the actuator have little clearance between them. If the actuator is secured with its adjustment lever in clockwise position (instead of counterclockwise as called for in step 4), the slight side-to-side movement of the actuator during normal operation will be toward the circuit board instead of away from it. If the actuator impacts the circuit board, equipment damage may result. 4. Position the TEC Actuator Package onto the damper shaft. 5. Hold the TEC Actuator Package steady and tighten the set screw (Figure 4) to the following inch pounds of torque: 60 inch pounds solid steel or plastic graphite composite (hollow steel shafts require an insert to prevent shaft damage!) 8 inch pounds hollow aluminum shafts Save the hex wrench. It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to fully tighten the set screw. Loose set screws are the leading cause of actuator control failure. Cut and remove the cable tie, confirming release of the location pin (Figure 6) to its neutral position. Push it free if stuck. Page 4 of 7
CUT AND REMOVE LOCATION PIN TEC006R4 Figure 6. Confirming Release of Location Pin. 8. If a mechanical range (damper stop) adjustment is necessary, do it now (Figure 8). Damper Position In most cases, you will want to finish with the damper in open position so that airflow through ductwork will not be obstructed. Since most boxes open clockwise, the damper is probably closed at this point in these instructions. (If this is not the case that is, the damper is open in counterclockwise position then installation is complete.) Place the filter - cm from the end of the cable or wiring to be shielded. Wind the cable tightly twice around the filter. - cm Proceed with step 9 if the damper is in counterclockwise position and closed. 9. Manually open the damper clockwise using the actuator s adjustment lever. Use the hex wrench for leverage if necessary (Figure 9). The installation is complete. CE Compliance If CE compliance is required, the Equipment Controller must be mounted in a grounded metal enclosure and a ferrite filter must be placed approximately cm from the end of the cable being shielded (RTS cable and point wiring for AI), Figure 7. Remove the terminal block from the TEC and disconnect actuator wiring.. Using the hex wrench supplied, loosen the old actuator s set screw (see Figure 5 for set screw). Remove actuator and set aside.. Determine the damper shaft diameter. Do one of the following: If it measures /-inch ( to 4 mm), skip to step 5. If it is not /-inch, remove the black plastic guide piece from the hub of the new actuator (Figure ). 4. Do one of the following: If the shaft diameter measures /8-inch (8 to 0 mm), install the metal insert into the actuator hub (Figure ). If the shaft diameter measures 5/8-inch (5 to 7 mm), no insert is necessary. The metal insert MUST be used if the damper shaft diameter equals /8-inch. TEC007R AUTO MANUAL Figure 0. Place actuator over damper shaft in correct position on the TEC Actuator Package. Tighten the set screw to the following inch-pounds of torque: 60 inch pounds solid steel or plastic graphite composite (hollow steel shafts require an insert to prevent shaft damage!) 8 inch pounds hollow aluminum shafts Page 6 of 7
