August 2010 Pullman / Great Northern Road Number none / Natalie New N Scale 28-1 Parlor Car This 83 heavyweight 28-1 parlor car is painted Pullman Green with gold logo and lettering. It was built by Pullman Standard in the 1920s and runs on six-wheel passenger trucks. This Pullman Heavyweight Parlor car (28-1 28 Seat-1 Drawing Room) was built in the mid-1920s from the Pullman Plan #3416. Pullman s Heavyweight construction was modular, making it possible for floor plans to economically evolve with the times. Cars were generally in service thru the 1960s. The introduction of the steel cars brought the end of the luxurious, artisan-crafted, and custom designed wooden cars which had been the rule since the 1880s. With the opening of the Pennsylvania Station in New York in 1910 and the Grand Central Terminal in 1913, passenger safety in the tunnels approaching these buildings demanded a more noncombustible material. This Pullman heavyweight parlor car is painted Pullman Green with Natalie logo and lettering in metallic gold. It was built in the 1920s by Pullman-Standard and runs on six wheel passenger trucks. In 1942, Great Northern purchased their only two 28-1 parlor cars; they were the CORDELIA and the NATALIE. Cordelia and Natalie were built in 1924 and re-numbered to coach numbers #1083 & #1084 respectively by the GN in December of 1942. They were rebuilt into Buffet-Parlor-Observation cars TWIN CITIES (#1083) and TWIN PORTS (#1084) in 1952. The introduction of the steel cars brought the end of the wooden cars which had been the rule since the 1880s. With the opening of the Pennsylvania Station in New York in 1910 and the Grand Central Terminal in 1913, passenger safety in the tunnels approaching these buildings demanded a more noncombustible material than wood. Pullman #143 00 010...$22.70 NEW BODYSTYLE! Great Northern #143 00 020...$22.70 Pacific Fruit Express Road Number PFE 300217 Penn Central Road Number PC 766058 This 50 mechanical reefer is painted reefer orange with aluminum roof and black ends. The UP and SP logos are printed in black and the reefer bears black lettering on sides and ends. It was built by Southern Pacific Equipment Co. at Roseville, CA, in April 1955, serviced in August 1955, and runs on Roller Bearing trucks. Series 300138-300297 was painted in the required painting and lettering specifications of the time for frozen food cars the positions of the SP herald and the UP shield being reversed on each side of the car. This heavyweight depressed-center flat car is painted green with white logo and lettering. One of a two-car series, PC 766059 was built at Penn Central s shop in Beech Grove, IN, in September of 1967, then repainted at the Altoona shop in 1973. This car, like many of PC s depressed-center flat cars, was prohibited from third rail operations. To keep the center of gravity as low as possible, non-standard 30 diameter wheels were used. WITH GENERATOR LOAD PFE, UP and SP are a registered trademark of the Union Pacific Railroad. #069 00 190...$25.25 #109 00 100...$22.35 Western Pacific Road Numbers WP 70202 / 70206 These 100-ton three bay covered hoppers with coal loads are painted black with white logo and lettering. They were built by Greenville Steel Car in February of 1979 and run on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. The cars in this series were leased from PLM Inc. and intended to be used for service to a Sierra Pacific power plant, then under construction. The ends were painted either white or, as in this case, blue. The blue identifies the end of the car with a swivel coupler; this allows the cars to be emptied using an in-train rotary dumper. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Road Number RBBX 84710 This open bi-level autorack was modified by Ringling Bros. to fit their specific needs. Autoracks carried autos, wagons with lighting, concessions and other equipment to the next arena. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus 84710 was located with the RBBX Red Unit Train in October 1999. Flatcar is lettered for RBBX and racks are stenciled with two Red Vintage Globes, one toward each end. It bears the portrait of our 29th president, Warren Harding. The car comes with a commemorative pin replicated from this era. Harding was an influential newspaper publisher before public service.
