Amphibious Pump Leaflet 2.qxd 30/3/06 13:33 Page 8 Electrical installation 6 INSTALLATION The power supply must meet the specifications on the product. The pump is intended to be used with either a weatherproof cable connector or permanently connected to the fixed wiring of the mains system other than by means of a plug and socket. A 3 amp fuse must be fitted in the mains circuit. The cores in the supply cable are coloured in accordance with the following code: Brown = Live, Blue = Neutral, Green/Yellow = Earth. The electric cable is permanently connected and sealed in the motor body. If the supply cable is damaged the pump must not be used and must be safely discarded. Do not use the supply cable to lift the pump as this may cause damage. WARNING - THIS PUMP MUST BE EARTHED A Residual Current Device (RCD), also know as the Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB), with a tripping current not exceeding 30mA must be installed in the supply circuit. A means of disconnection from the supply having a contact separation of at least 3mm in all poles must be incorporated in the fixed wiring. For permanent installations to the mains supply, it is necessary to conform to the regulations of the national and local electricity authority and this would include the use of a metal or plastic conduit to protect the cable. Attention has been drawn to the fact that special rules may exist concerning the installation of your pond pump (i.e. local building regulations). These pumps must not be used in swimming pools, or areas where people are in contact with the water. Always disconnect the mains electricity supply whilst the equipment is being installed, repaired, maintained or handled. Consult a qualified electrician if in any doubt about wiring this product to the main supply.! Warning - The Amphibious pump is provided with a thermal cut out that temporarily switches off the pump in case of overheating, the pump may automatically restart when it has cooled.

Amphibious Pump Leaflet 2.qxd 30/3/06 13:33 Page 9 Locating your Amphibious Pump The Amphibious pump should be located on a firm and level base in the pond/water feature in a depth of at least 10cm, but no more than 4m. It is advisable to keep the pump off the bottom of the pond to avoid silt entering the pump causing excessive wear and increasing pre-filter cleaning.! INSTALLATION Never run the pump out of water as this may cause irreparable damage. Fountain Make sure there is ample cable from mains supply. Place pump in desired location. Adjust telescopic riser pipe so fountain head is above surface of the pond. Fountain height can now be adjusted, see "Adjusting dual control T-piece" diagram below. The fountain ball joint can be used to adjust for uneven pond floors ensuring the fountain display is kept vertical and within the pond. See "Getting to know your Amphibious pump" fittings for parts and descriptions. ADJUSTING DUAL CONTROL T PIECE AND TELESCOPIC RISER PIPE 1 Adjust height by unlocking collar then 1 pushing or pulling 30cm telescopic riser pipe (see "Getting to know your Amphibious pump" for parts descriptions). Optional additional 20cm extensions can be added to increase the height. 4 BELL AND TULIP FOUNTAIN Adjust Bell or Tulip by moving head higher for small bell and lower for a wider bell shape. 2 3 4 OUTLET FLOW CONTROL VALVE Supply water features, waterfalls and filters by adding 1" 3 /4" 1 /2" fittings and hose. Adjust flow by turning flow control valve. FOUNTAIN FLOW CONTROL VALVE Adjust fountain jet flow by turning flow control valve. FOUNTAIN BALL JOINT Adjust the collar of the ball joint to enable the extensions to be moved compensating for a uneven pond floor. 2 3 Tip: Ensure that any fountain, waterfall, filter or feature fitted does not empty water out of pond/water feature. In windy conditions it may be necessary to shut off or reduce the height of your fountain display to prevent water loss. Also see the explanatory diagram on the top face of your Amphibious pump carton. 7

Amphibious Pump Leaflet 2.qxd 30/3/06 13:33 Page 10 INSTALLATION Water Feature / Filter / Waterfall Install as for Fountain. Depending on water feature to be supplied, your Amphibious pump can be used with the dual control T-piece 1" 1/4" 1/2" hose fitting (see "Adjusting dual control T-piece" diagram). Hose clips should be used to secure hose. Tip: The larger 1 hose fitting will give maximum pump flow performance. If you do not require a fountain a significant increase in performance will be gained by connecting the hose fitting directly to the pump outlet flange. Ensure pipe work is not blocked, leaking or is laid so that it gets crushed or kinked. Keep the height that water is to be pumped from the water surface (called Head) to a minimum. The higher the head the lower the flow rate and the more wear on the pump. Use the largest diameter, smoothest bore pond hose over the shortest distance and keep hose fittings to a minimum. This removes frictional loss of flow and so increases pump flow rates. Also see the explanatory diagram on the top face of your Amphibious pump carton. MAINTENANCE & CLEANING! Warning - Failure to carry out routine maintenance leaving the pump under reduced or no flow conditions for long periods (e.g. blocked pre-filter) will result in a shorter pump life and will invalidate the guarantee. Blagdon Amphibious pumps are centrifugal pumps with a magnetic impeller movement driven by a watertight asynchronous motor. They require minimum cleaning, only periodic cleaning of the pre-filter and impeller is necessary. Cleaner The use of Blagdon Pond Pump Cleaner will give improved performance and pump life by removing built-up lime scale and waste. Use before dismantling for easier, cleaner handling. Tip: New ponds and ponds in hard water areas will cause lime scale to build-up more quickly. Dip your pump more frequently with Blagdon Pond Pump Cleaner to maintain optimum performance. 8

Amphibious Pump Leaflet 2.qxd 30/3/06 13:33 Page 11 MAINTENANCE & CLEANING Routine Maintenance Carry out routine maintenance when pump flow is visibly reduced. 1. Switch off electricity to the pump, and all other electrical pond equipment. 2. Remove pump from pond (do not use the cable to lift the pump). 3. Open pre-filter by unscrewing the pump flange from the outlet of the pump and opening the pre-filter lock with a coin. 4. Remove pump (see getting to know your Amphibious Pre-Filter). Wash the pre-filter and impeller inlet thoroughly in fresh water. A blocked pre-filter and impeller inlet will reduce the pump flow rate. Monthly Maintenance Follow steps 1 to 4 as per Routine Maintenance. The impeller and impeller inlet can become blocked by pond waste. Clean the impeller according to the following instructions. Follow steps 1 to 4 as per Routine Maintenance. MONTHLY MAINTENANCE 2 2 1 Impeller Vanes Impeller Inlet 1 2 Remove the pump motor from the impeller/rotor housing by holding the housing while turning the motor clockwise (see arrows provided on the pump). Dismantle the Impeller/Rotor assembly by undoing the centre bolt ensuring the washer is kept in a safe place. NB: THIS IS A LEFT-HAND THREADED BOLT SO MUST BE UNSCREWED IN A CLOCKWISE DIRECTION (THE OPPOSITE TO A NORMAL THREAD DIRECTION). Remove the ceramic thrust washer, the ceramic shaft and the impeller rotor assembly from the impeller/rotor housing. Clean all parts of the impeller in fresh water ensuring that the impeller vanes and impeller inlet are clean. 9

Amphibious Pump Leaflet 2.qxd 30/3/06 13:33 Page 12 MAINTENANCE & CLEANING RE-ASSEMBLY 3 Radial groove chamfered end 5 6 4 Impeller 7 3 4 5 6 7 9 Fit the ceramic shaft to the pump housing with the radial groove and chamfered end towards the pump housing. The shaft and its location in the pump housing must be clean with no dirt or debris trapped between them. Trapped dirt may affect the alignment of the impeller, which may damage the pump. Slide rotor / impeller over ceramic shaft (with the impeller towards the pump housing). Lay ceramic thrust washer on top of the shaft. The faces of the shaft and thrust washer must be clean. Any trapped dirt may cause uneven wear of the ceramic washer and may allow the rotor to damage the pump. Fit the centre bolt through centre holes of ceramic washer and shaft, ensuring the copper centre bolt washer is fitted between the head of the bolt and ceramic thrust washer. Carefully tighten the LEFT HAND THREADED BOLT to a maximum torque of 2Nm. The Impeller assembly should rotate freely after tightening. If it does not, dismantle and re-check. DO NOT LUBRICATE THE ROTOR ASSEMBLY WITH ANYTHING OTHER THAN CLEAN WATER Ensure impeller/rotor housing O ring seal is correctly seated in its recess and reassemble motor to pump housing assembly. If the motor to pump housing is difficult to fit, lubricate the O ring with clean water only. The impeller assembly consists of the impeller/rotor, ceramic shaft, centre bolt, copper washer, ceramic thrust washer and sealing O ring. Replacement impeller kits are available for all models in the range. 10

Amphibious Pump Leaflet 2.qxd 30/3/06 13:33 Page 13 MAINTENANCE & CLEANING Annual Maintenance Following as for routine and monthly maintenance, once a year you should service your pump by using Blagdon Pond Pump Cleaner, (this may need to be done more frequently in hard water areas). Dismantle pump and examine all parts for wear or damage, replacing any parts that show obvious wear and/or damage. (See "Getting to know your Amphibious Pump" for parts/description and replacement parts codes.) Particular care should be taken to examine the cable entry point and the cable; if there is any sign of damage the pump should be discarded and safely disposed of. Winter Storage The pump can be run in the pond during the winter but care should be taken to ensure that it is fully immersed and cannot freeze solid. If the pump is not used during the winter, follow annual maintenance procedure and store frostfree in the house or garage until spring. All maintenance outlined in this booklet must be carried out by competent personel. The Amphibious Pump is suitable for use in garden ponds at water temperatures above freezing and below 35 C. 11

Amphibious Pump Leaflet 2.qxd 30/3/06 13:33 Page 14 Problem Low flow from pump TROUBLESHOOTING 1. Follow routine cleaning procedure. 2. Follow monthly cleaning procedure. 3. Ensure pipe work is not blocked, leaking or is laid so that it gets crushed or kinked. 4. Keep the height that water is to be pumped from the water surface (called Head) to a minimum. The higher the head the lower the flow rate and the more wear on the pump. 5. Use the largest diameter, smoothest bore pond hose over the shortest distance and keep hose fittings to a minimum. This removes frictional loss. 6. The larger 1" hose fitting will give maximum pump flow performance. If you do not require a fountain a significant increase in performance will be gained by connecting the hose fitting directly to the pump outlet flange. Poor fountain performance 1. Reduced height. 2. Jets blocked. Clean flow adjuster and fountain head. Wash under a tap or hose. Blagdon Pond Pump Cleaner should be used to remove lime scale build-up/waste (see diagram) for improved results. DAISY/TRIPLE To clean, remove head and rinse. Or in hard water areas, use Blagdon Pond Pump Cleaner. No flow from pump 1. Check power supply is on. 2. Check fuse and wiring (SEE ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION). 3. Follow low flow procedure as above. If none of the above works contact Interpet (Blagdon) Consumer Advice Department (See Faults problem procedure Page 13). 12
