91 B TRAXCAVATOR SYSTEMS OPERATION 2-0 AIR INDUCTION AND EXHAUST SYSTEM Engine this situation the engine will perform at slightly less than maximum efficiency. When operated-at a higher altitude, the rack setting and high idle speed setting must be changed. Air induction and exhaust system parts include: l-exhaust manifold.,2-lnlet manifold. -Engine cylinder. -Air inlet. -Turbocharger compressor impeller. -Turbocharger turbine wheel. 7-Exhaust outlet. This engine has an exhaust driven turbocharger to provide compacted air to the cylinders. Filtered air from the dry-type air cleaner is piped to the turbocharger compressor section where air is compressed. From the compressor, air is directed into the inlet manifold to the engine cylinders. When the engine load increases, more fuel is injected into the engine cylinders. The volume of exhaust gas increases, this causes the turbocharger turbine wheel and compressor impeller to rotate faster. The increased RPM of the impeller increases the quantity of inlet air. As the turbocharger provides additional inlet air, more fuel can be burned; hence more horsepower derived from the engine. ALTITUDE OPERATION Maximum turbocharger speed is determined by the rack setting, the high idle speed setting and the altitude at which the engine is operated. The high idle speed and the rack setting are not the same for all altitudes. If the high idle speed or the rack setting is greater than specified for the altitude at which the engine is operated, serious damage to engine or turbocharger parts can result. The fuel pump rack has been set by qualified personnel for a particular engine application. The governor housing and turbocharger are sealed to prevent unqualified personnel from adjusting the rack; adjusting the high idle speed or installing the wrong turbocharger nozzle. The engine can be operated at a lower altitude than specified without danger of engine damage. In VALVES AND VALVE MECHANISM This is a four stroke per cycle engine; i.e., four separate piston strokes are required to complete the firing of one cylinder. There are two in-head valves (inlet and exhaust) for each cylinder. The valves are actuated by the camshaft through mechanical lifters, push rods and rocker arm assemblies. The camshaft is timed to the crankshaft and turns at one-half crankshaft RPM. Valve rotators cause the valves to rotate during engine operation. Components of a typical valve and valve mechanism group are: l-valve spring. 2-Retainer. -Lock. -Rocker arm assembly. -Push rod. -Valve guide. 7-Valve rotator. 8-Valve. 9-Valve seat insert. Correctly adjusted valves operate for many hours before they need to be reconditioned. Eventually, however, the valve faces and seats become pitted, causing loss of compression. The cylinder head contains valve seat inserts which can be replaced when the seats have been reground to the extreme limits. TURBOCHARGER The turbocharger is mounted to the engine exhaust manifold. All the exhaust gases from the diesel engine pass through the turbocharger. The exhaust gases enter the turbine housing and are directed through the blades of & turbine wheel, causing the turbine wheel and a compressor wheel to rotate. Filtered inlet air' from the air cleaners is drawn through the air inlet of the compressor housing by 1

91 B TRAXCAVATOR TESTING AND ADJUSTING -20 Engine ing the high idle and low idle adjusting screws. Turning either adjusting screw in a clockwise direction will decrease the respective high and low idle RPM. The holes in the cover are shaped to prevent the screws from turning after the adjustment has been made. After setting the idle RPM, move the governor control lever to change the engine RPM. Return it to the idle position and recheck the idle RPM. Repeat the adjustment procedure until the specified.: idle RPM is obtained. Dial indicator adjusted to zero reading: -Hole attachment. -Spacer.. Before starting the engine, be sure the rack moves freely throughout its entire length of travel. The speed limiter will restrict the rack travel until the engine is operating with proper oil pressure, or the plunger is manually depressed.. If it is necessary to adjust the rack, refer to FUEL RACK SETTING - USING THE RACK SETTING GAUGE and follow steps 1, and. i CAUTION-The low and high idle RPM and the rack setting dimensions for this engine are in-.'0: corpora ted in the RACK SETTING INFORMATION. ~ Only competent personnel should attempt to ~ adjust these settings. GOVERNOR ADJUSTMENTS Low and High Idle RPM The engine RPM should be checked with an accurate tachometer. Provisions for using a tachometer have been made at the Service Meter drive housing. The reading taken at this point will be one-half engine RPM' with a 1: 1 tachometer. Low and high idle RPM can be adjusted by removing the cover on top of the governor and turn- FUEL RACK SETTING-USING THE RACK SETTING GAUGE Use either the 7S711 or the 8M0 Rack Setting Gauge to check the fuel rack setting. The fuel rack can be checked and adjusted with the fuel injection pump housing either installed or off the engine. 1. Remove the rack cover from the front of the accessory drive housing rear flange and the cover from the rear of the governor housing. This view illustrates the installation of the: 1-7S711 or 8MS0 Rack Setting Gauge. 2. Install a 7S711 or 8M0 Rack Setting Gauge over the front end of the fuel rack.. Set gauge to the proper rack setting. Refer to the RACK SETTING INFORMATION for correct setting. 2 ---_--t: Parts involved in making governor adjustments are: 1-Cover. 2-Retainer holes (two). -High idle adjusting screw. -Low idle adjusting screw. 17 This cross section identifies: 2-Torque spring. -Spacer. -Collar.
