The subject will cover fundamental material structure, class of material properties, measurement of the properties, and knowledge to make material selection with better properties. The common micro-structural features of different material classes will be outlined in order to relate material with its characteristics. (7) Hasil Pembelajaran / Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course, students are expected to be: 1. Ability to compare types of material families (metal, polymer, ceramic, and composite) and describe material structure. 2. Ability to analyze, calculate, and compare various material characteristic and properties such as mechanical, electrical, magnetic, and optical properties. 3. Chapter 1 ATOM AND BONDING Week 2 (17/9 21/9) Analyze atomic structure, electron configuration, and atomic bonding of materials such as ionic bonding, covalent bonding, metallic bonding, permanent dipole bonding, and fluctuating dipole bonding. Chapter 2 MATERIAL STRUCTURE AND ATOMIC PACKING Week 3 4 (24/9 5/10) Differentiate types of material crystal structure such as Body-Centered Cubic (BCC), Face Centered Cubic (FCC), and Hexagonal Close Packed (HCP). Calculate the respective atomic packing factor of crystal structure. Chapter 3 Activities (Week 4) Week 5 (8/10 12/10) SOLIDIFICATION AND CRYSTAL IMPERFECTION Analyze crystal imperfection and solidification process. Identify the energy involve in solidification.
