I couldn t have used that much water. What happened? Often an expected spike in usage appears in April and May as outside watering is increased. This summer time increase usually peaks in August. Pool and/or hot tub owners experience an increase in usage when these items are refilled. Leak Detector Test. Turn off all water in your home and shut off the main valve to the sprinkling system. Open up the water meter box in the corner of your property near the street. There are numbers and an orange colored star shaped dial that can be seen behind a glass face on the water meter. This star dial should not turn if all the water is off. A spinning dial indicates a leak. A leaking faucet or toilet can account for a huge increase in water usage. If the underground sprinkling system has a leak, thousands of gallons of water can disappear into the sandy soil without any indication on the surface. To check for a leak in the sprinkling system, open the main valve to the sprinkling system and see if the meter spins. If yes, the leak is in the sprinkling system. I think I have a water leak, what do I do? If the leak is between the meter and the street, the City is responsible for repairs. Please call the Public Works department at 435-634-0689. If the leak is from the meter to your home, then you are responsible to locate the leak and make necessary repairs.
