United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service Circular Series FG 1-6 January 26 Grain: World Markets and Trade Larger Harvests Boost Australian Grain Exports MMT 4 Total Grain Production Rises Marketing Year Exports Estimated To Climb (4/ to /6 Increase) MMT 2 Wheat 3 3 1. 1 Barley 2 1. Rice Sorghum 1 /1 2/3 3/4 4/ /6 After a third year of strong production and large stocks, Australia s grain exports are expected to surge. For wheat, total supply is forecast at a record level (the result of both large carry-in stocks and a bigger harvest), and marketing year exports are consequently forecast to grow by nearly 2 million tons. Stocks could continue to rise, however, because weaker global demand and reduced buying from key markets such as China and Iraq will likely limit export growth. For barley, slightly higher production and strong world demand is expected to boost exports. Australia will remain the world s largest exporter, accounting for an estimated one-third of world trade (compared to a quarter last year). For rice, with a huge rebound in its crop, exports are forecast to grow more than four times the previous year s level, exerting downward pressure on medium grain rice prices and increasing Australia s competitiveness, vis-à-vis U.S. rice, in certain markets in the Middle East and Oceania. Approved by the World Agricultural Outlook Board - USDA

F A S/ G & F D WORLD MARKETS AND TRADE: COMMENTARY AND CURRENT DATA WHEAT: WORLD MARKETS AND TRADE MONTHLY HIGHLIGHTS: U.S. Imports From Canada Expected To Climb: U.S. imports of Hard Red Spring (HRS) from Canada are expected to jump from last year s low of 8, tons, after recent ITC and NAFTA rulings to remove import duties that had been in place since the spring of 23; HRS imports had been as high as 1.4 MMT. MMT 1.4 1.2 1 U.S. HRS Imports From Canada (grain only) When similar U.S. duties on durum wheat were removed in late 23, durum imports quickly returned to previous higher levels. Total U.S. imports are consequently raised this month by 2, tons to 2.4 million tons. U.S. Winter Wheat Area Up: U.S. winter wheat seeding area is projected to increase 2 percent mostly due to better planting and germinating conditions for Soft Red Winter (SRW), which is up 19 percent from last year. Hard Red Winter seedings are down 1 percent from last year. However, some key states actually expanded acreage because of concerns over high costs of fuel and fertilizer for springplanted crops. PRICES: Domestic: Prices for winter wheat classes rose in December on deteriorating crop conditions, especially in southern HRW belt states where there has been continued dryness. Mil. Bulgaria is up 1, tons to 8, because of strong shipments to nearby markets. Selected Importers United States is up 2, tons to 2.4 million on expectations for larger imports of spring wheat from Canada following the removal of duties. COARSE GRAINS: WORLD MARKETS AND TRADE MONTHLY HIGHLIGHTS: Brazil Corn Series Revised: USDA has revised down its consumption series and raised its stock series beginning in 21/2, based on official information released by government agency CONAB (Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento). Because the 24/ harvest fell by 7 million 4, tons to just 3 million tons, and based on the 3, beginning stocks estimate of 4 million tons, 3, government and private forecasters foresaw, imports at 4 to 6 million tons and strong domestic prices. However, as the year 2, progressed and prices remained low with very 1, little import activity, it became evident that 1, stocks were much higher than originally, thought. Brazil Corn Data Series 21/2 22/3 23/4 24/ /6 New Feed Old Feed New E. Stocks Old E. Stocks CONAB has explained that the error was in overestimating feed consumption, particularly by the poultry sector. For example, the production cycle for broilers has been shortened by about one-third, leading to reduced feed consumption. Forecasting stocks in Brazil is a challenge due to the large number of livestock and poultry operations as well as the difficulty in measuring stocks held by small producers. (A spreadsheet showing the changes can be found on the Grain and Feed website at http://www.fas.usda.gov/grain/circular/26/1-1/graintoc.htm.) MT ' PRICES: Domestic: December export bids for #2 yellow 14 corn were up sharply by $7 to nearly $13/MT. 13 December export bids for #2 yellow sorghum (Texas Gulf) were up over $3 to $96/MT. 12 U.S. Gulf Export Bids Prices strengthened because of higher barge rates 11 and concerns over weather in South America. However, the increase was tempered by relatively 1 weak export demand. 9 $/MT TRADE CHANGES IN /26 Selected Exporters 8 Sep-3 Dec-3 Mar-4 Jun-4 Sep-4 Dec-4 Mar- Sorghum (Texas Gulf) Jun- Sep- Corn Dec- United States corn is down by 1. million tons to 47. million because of reduced foreign demand. 14 Grain: World Markets and Trade, January 26

Argentina corn is down by 2, tons to 12. million because of a reduced production forecast. Brazil corn is up by 7, tons to 1. million and imports are reduced by 3, tons to 7,, as a result of lower domestic use and higher stocks. Selected Importers Canada corn is cut by, tons again this month to 1. million, the lowest in 6 years, based on slow purchases, ample feed grain supplies, and the additional import duties imposed on U.S. corn last month. EU- corn is up by, tons to 3. million as import licenses are up 7 percent over last year. Grain: World Markets and Trade, January 26 1
