GAUGE I David Jenkinson - A man and his trains David and I were married in 1957 when he was an Education Officer in the RAF; he was still too young for married quarters, so we lived in a caravan. Somehow a small model railway grew; it ran across one doorway and we had to duck under it to get in! Two years after David left the RAF he got a job that could have been made for him: Head of Education and Research at the National Railway Museum in York. When we bought our first house a more ambitious railway soon emerged. After moving to another lovely house, we then found the perfect spot: Holly Tree Cottage, with a large garden with fruit trees, island flower beds - and an empty stable block. Christened The Shed, this became the home of the Kendal Branch, built with the help of many, many friends, who later enjoyed the garden railway that followed, accompanied by picnics and wine. David always loved the LMS, having cofounded the LMS Society in the 1960 s. So, his next project for the garden railway was the LMS Stanier Turbomotive. He researched all the necessary information then commissioned his railway friends, many experts in their own fields, to realise his dream. But, soon afterwards, just before Christmas 2003, David was diagnosed with lung cancer and died three months later. All his rolling stock was then auctioned at Christie s but I kept the Turbomotive and it has remained in my study in its special box. It seems a waste for a beautiful model never to be seen, so I have decided to send it for auction. I hope it will find a new home, either on display or, better still, running around a sunny garden. 659. The Alex Cameron Diecast and Toy Collection 9 May From an early age Alex was fascinated by all things motoring-related and his collecting habit began as a child. Matchbox was first love, but then he discovered Norev on a trip to France. This led to his love of plastic and the wonderful Hong Kong models. Another long-lasting favourite was the Lone Star / Impy range of models, of which he amassed a fine selection. Alex was the most eclectic of collectors and never felt the need to restrict himself - scale, size, manufacturer, age, country of origin, material, or indeed quality - from the latest super-detailed resin model to the crudest slush cast, he loved them all. Many people will know him from the informative and entertaining articles he wrote for Model Collector - always illustrated with excellent photographs of models from his own collection. He was a great influence and inspiration to many. He passed away suddenly at home in April 2017, just short of his 70th birthday. It was his wish that his collection be sold at auction in the hope that others may continue to enjoy the models that he cherished. We hold ten toy auctions a year, with train auctions in addition, and are regularly travelling around the country taking in consignments.
