HISTORIC TRAFFIC COUNT DATA (1980 2015) Highlights The traffic trends for 25 locations in the 22202 zip code area have decreased by 20 percent (on average) since 2000, when traffic peaked. Currently, average weekday traffic in the area is at levels experienced between the years 1985 and 1990. Description The charts and tables below provide Arlington County average weekday daily traffic (AWDT) count data, collected in five-year intervals between 1980-2015, for roads within the 22202 zip code area. Arlington collects traffic count data on a regular basis for County-maintained arterial roadways throughout the County. AWDT data from 25 locations was selected for analysis because they have the most comprehensive and complete set of counts during the 35-year period. This data is presented in three formats: Graphed - showing AWDT volumes over the 35-year period for each location; Mapped - showing AWDT volumes for all 25 locations for each of the five-year intervals between 1980-2015, and As a Trend - By summing the counts from all 25 locations and graphing the sum for each five-year interval. HISTORIC TRAFFIC COUNT DATA (1980 2015) Average Weekday Daily Traffic (AWDT) for 1990 and 2015 For 25 Locations in 22202 Zip Code Area -

HISTORIC TRAFFIC COUNT DATA (1980 2015) Context in Planning Spectrum Where is this data used in the planning spectrum? Coordinated Regional Planning County Comprehensive Plan Sector Plans & Small Area Plans Site Plans & PDSPs Building Level Transportation Studies Background Today, traffic counts are collected approximately every three years for arterial roadways in the County. This data is collected using tube counters that continuously collected data over the course of a minimum of 24 weekday hours. These counts are then reviewed for technical issues. In the past, when multiple days of data were collected, an average of the daily count data was recorded. Counters are typically placed at the same locations to get better historical data over time. Arlington has a significant amount of count data for arterial roads within the 22202 zip code area. A thorough review of County records turned up at least one traffic count between the years of 1980-2015 for more than 70 locations in the 22202 zip code area. For 25 of these locations, a nearly complete data set of counts at five-year intervals going back to 1980 was available. These 25 locations are well distributed across the 22202 zip code area, providing a diverse resource to analyze changes in daily traffic volumes over a 35-year period for specific roads and broadly across the 22202 zip code area. When data was not available for one of these locations during an interval, it was noted, and estimates were made to complete the data set. For the few locations where data was estimated, notes have been included in the data tables providing the methods used to estimate daily traffic volumes. Cumulative Average Weekday Daily Traffic Trend for the 22202 Zip Code Area By reviewing the AWDT count data for individual locations, it is hard to get a sense of how traffic flows for the overall area have changed. Even by plotting data for all 25 locations on one chart it is difficult to easily identify any overall trend. However, the noise from the data can be removed by adding the data together for each five year interval for all 25 locations, to produce a cumulative AWDT trend line for the area. When the volumes are aggregated together for all of the locations, the sum should not be considered as the total traffic for the area or the total number of vehicles driving within the study area on a daily basis. For example, a person working in the area and living outside the area may get counted at multiple locations as they travel to and from work. Based on the cumulative AWDT trend line for the area, traffic peaked in the year 2000 and has been steadily falling since. -

HISTORIC TRAFFIC COUNT DATA (1980 2015) Cumulative Average Weekday Daily Traffic (AWDT) Trend 1980-2015 Findings Based on the cumulative average weekday daily traffic trend for the area, traffic volumes are down 20% from their peak in the year 2000. Overall, traffic volumes are currently similar to what they were between the years of 1985-1990. In the 22202 zip code area, 13 of the 25 (52%) count locations show AWDT volumes lower than the volumes observed in 1990, seven (28%) count locations are showing AWDT volumes higher, and the remaining five (20%) count locations are about the same.
