Classification: Reference: Date: EC02-026 NTB02-109 November 5, 2002 MIL ON WITH DTC P0102/P1102 (MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR MAFS) STORED APPLIED VEHICLE: 2002 Maxima (A33) APPLIED DATE: Vehicles built before January 7, 2002 SERVICE INFORMATION If an applied vehicle has DTC P0102/P1102 stored and possibly exhibits, Engine rough running Engine surging Low engine power follow the steps outlined in the Service Procedure on page 2 to resolve this incident, if it should occur. Service Procedure Summary: Remove dust/dirt/debris from inside the air cleaner housing. Install a new genuine Nissan air filter element. See the third bullet point under IMPORTANT (page 2) for more information. Install a new complete airflow meter assembly. See Parts Information for the part number (P/N). Reprogram the ECM with special new data that is matched to the different output characteristics of the new airflow meter. IMPORTANT: The purpose of the Service Procedure Summary (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service Procedure (starting on page 2) as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair. 1/6

SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Remove the air filter element. Then, vacuum out all dust/dirt/debris found inside both halves of the air filter housing. CAUTION: Make sure all dust/dirt/debris is removed from the air filter housing. This is an important part of the repair. Only use a vacuum to remove dust/dirt/debris do not blow compressed shop air inside the air filter housing. 2. Install a new genuine Nissan replacement air filter element into the filter housing cover, then install this assembly in the air filter housing. 3. Install the new complete airflow meter assembly (see Figure 1). Refer to the Parts Information table for the new airflow meter assembly part number. Front Air Flow Meter Brake fluid reservoir IMPORTANT: Harness/ connector (Air Flow Meter) Figure 1 TP020506 The new airflow meter assembly MUST be installed as a complete unit Do not attempt to transfer the new airflow sensing element to the old airflow meter housing. The new element is not compatible to operate in the old housing and will cause performance and emissions to be impaired. A new genuine Nissan air filter element must be used for all warranty claims, and any other claim for which Nissan pays. A new genuine Nissan air filter element is designed to be compatible with the Nissan air flow meter and has proven to provide adequate dust protection. It is recommended that incident customers continue using Nissan genuine air filters for assured protection when replacing according to the routine maintenance schedule. See parts information for the air filter part number (P/N). 2/6

ECM Re-programming Steps: 4. Determine the vehicle's ECM Part Number. The ECM P/N is found on top of the CONSULT-II self-diagnosis printout (see Figure 2), or by CONSULT ECM P/N Selection. * Example only, your screen may differ. ECM Part Number SYSTEM ENGINE DATE XX/XX/XXXX* 04:57:28 P/N 23710-5Y710 SELF-DIAG RESULTS DTC RESULTS TIME MAFS/Circuit 0 [P1102] TP010488a Figure 2 5. Compare the vehicle's ECM P/N to those shown under Current ECM P/N in Chart A (page 5): A. If the ECM P/N in the vehicle does not match one of those listed in Chart A (page 5), Current ECM P/N column, do not perform ECM reprogramming. B. If the ECM P/N in the vehicle does match one of those listed in Chart A (page 5), Current ECM P/N column: Make a note of the new ECM data P/N and ECM ID Code Reprogram the ECM. Click here for the ECM Reprogramming Procedure or refer to Attachment 1 in the printed copy of this bulletin. IMPORTANT NOTES: This is a special ECM reprogram process and this procedure is used FOR THIS INCIDENT ONLY! An ECM ID CODE must be entered (see Figure 3) to get the Reprogramming data from ASIST. This is different from the typical ECM Reprogramming procedures now in use, which requires the model and model year to be entered to look up ECM data in ASIST. Attachment 1 Special ECM Reprogramming Procedure for ECM I.D. Entry is to be used for this bulletin and is different from Attachment A which was released in previous bulletins. Do NOT use Attachment A for this bulletin. 3/6

The following provides steps to obtain the ECM reprogramming data from ASIST. For a detailed ECM reprogramming procedure, click here or refer to Attachment 1 in the printed copy of this bulletin. A.
