Build Season Overview Nabeel Peshimam October 27 th, 2014
! Two Robots?!! Documentation! Subteam Division! Kickoff! Game Analysis! Priority List! Weeks 1-4! Concept Design! Prototyping! Design Freezes!! Build Process! Week 5 & 6! Tweaking & Perfecting! Driver Practice! Bag n Tag Day! Weekly Reviews! Day-By-Day List! Continued Iteration! Prep for Events! Practice robot
! Side-By-Side Builds! As close to identical as possible! More hands on the robot!! Allows us to iterate and improve on the practice robot even after the competition robot is bagged! Can add improvements & lessons learned from practice robot to the competition robot when we arrive at our first event! Allows for extended driver practice & code development
! Engineering Notebook! Tracks day-by-day progress! Updated with every prototype, idea, design change including what doesn t work!! Enables all of us to see changes and catch up on days/decisions/ideas we might have missed! Judged for awards!! CAD! Helps more clearly illustrate drawings! Detailed planning for measurements! Photos & Video! Should be taken at all sessions!! Share within team during season, posted publicly afterwards! Robot Reveal! Video to share with community after the robot is complete
! Drivetrain: A & B! Drive system: Frame, wheels, gearboxes, chains and belts! Also responsible for bumper planning & mounting integration to drive frame! Mechanism: A & B! May divide further to address separate Mechanism system(s) intake vs. shooter, etc! Programming! May need tweaks between systems to account for minor differences! Electrical! Wiring diagrams should match & both should be marked, clean, and organized! There is no difference between the two teams except which robot you re putting together.! All subteams work side-byside with their A & B counterparts to create IDENTICAL robots!
! Game Analysis! Read all rules for penalties & guides! Find applicable strategies What could a robot do in this game?! Priority List! What will OUR robot do? Not the how just yet just what!! Examples: Drive (Speed/Agility/Pushing), Manipulate Game Piece, Defend
! Define goals from Priority List! Actions robot needs to perform! Can actions be combined & done by one system?! Concept Design creation! How will it do that? Simple mechanism ideas, not detailed drawings (yet!) Elevator, wheeled shooter, roller intake etc.! Look at old FIRST games!! Team discussion on concept ideas! 2-3 different ideas per action will be prototyped
! Prototypes! Ugly Cardboard, rubber bands, pizza boxes Get the rough concept down! Final Understand geometries of game objects, robot mechanisms, and how they interact! Drawings are created w/ detail! Proper measurements, mounting! Motor types and sensor/electrical requirements! CAD drawings start!
! Day 5: Drivetrain Concept FROZEN! That means no more changes!! Example: we know we will build a 6 wheel drive, geared for a top speed of 16 ft/sec! Begin drawings, gear reduction calculation, wheel choice & other details! Final Mechanism Prototypes! Beginning of Mechanism drawings! Understand geometry, motion, and the how of each mechanism concept! Prove concept with the model!
! Start detailed drawings & CAD! Allow space for Mechanism mounting! Plan for bumper location & mounting! Assemble gearboxes! Put together frame rails & wheels! Rolling drivetrain check for alignment! Work w/ Electrical team to plan out electronics panel and belly pan! Begin Electrical component installation! Connect drive modules (chain/belts)
! System(s) prototyping continues! Think about how it mounts to drive base! Interaction with:! Bumpers! Game objects! Other mechanisms! Refine designs & details! Ex: Type of gearbox, roller type, shooter wheels
! Prototype testing and modification! Size & Shape! Material! Motion & interaction! Potential design changes due to:! Weight restrictions! Practicality on drive base! Material/space restrictions! Efficiency (electrical, pneumatic)
! Programming! Brainstorming the what of autonomous modes! Drive base code! Electrical! Prepping electrical components for installation! Mounting bellypan and creating wiring diagrams! Bumpers! Begin construction of three sets Red & Blue for competition robot One set for practice robot! Taking mounting brackets into consideration from the beginning!
! Connected, completed Drivetrain! Gearboxes, Chain/belt, wiring! Control system & bellypan installed! Bumpers starting to become a reality! Day 9: Mechanism Concept FROZEN! That means no more changes!! Continued prototyping & drawing! Programming team mobilized! Drive code begun! Autonomous mode brainstorm
! Work out the tweaks on both bots! Create pit kit for servicing! Start autonomous programming testing! Drive code complete! Bumper work! Complete all three sets!! Footprint, Mounting, Completion w/ numbers! Wiring marked, installed, diagrammed! Focus on connections to Mechanism
! Start detailed system(s) design drawings! Measurements & mounting holes! Gearbox type & connections! Plan for wiring / sensor routing! Focus on connection between drive base and mechanism! Start manufacturing & connecting the parts!
! Drive base code & autonomous testing! Begin work on mechanism & sensors! What integration we will we need?! What types of sensors will be used?! Visual feedback for drivers?! Begin the control coding for mechanism systems
! Mechanism manufacturing mostly complete! Gearboxes, rollers, manipulator specifics ready to be mounted! Electrical board ready for Mechanism wiring! Drive base has connection points mounted for Mechanisms
! Mount Mechanism systems to Drivetrain! Integrate wiring, test complete system! Autonomous testing! Sensor integration! Mapping driver controls! Bumpers mounted! Tweak & fine-tune! ROBOT WILL BE MECHANICALLY AND ELECTRICALLY COMPLETE BY THE END OF THIS WEEK!
! Dial in small details about mechanism! Tweak what is needed through testing! Iterate & improve! Weight Reduction if needed! Autonomous program testing! Mapping driver controls! Create pit kit for servicing! Driver Practice! Backup drive team will drive for the B robot while the A robot is available! After bag day, both teams will practice with B! Tryouts/movement practice with any old robots that are functional
! Completion of pit kit & service plan! Pre-Match Checklist finalized! Battery & toolkit organization! Final weight reduction! Application of sponsor paneling! Driver Practice! Documentation: Photos & Video!
! February 17 th, 2015 at 11:59 pm! Robot A completed & packed up! Celebration!! Finalize, edit & post Reveal Video! Time to publish & share our season progress! Photos! Notebook! Prototype videos
! Drivetrain, Mechanism, Electrical, Programming, Outreach, Awards, Finance! ALL subteams present!! Costs so far! Progress on week s goals! Needs & criteria! Revised goals for the next week
