1.- INTRODUCTION: THE LABORATORIO DE GEOTECNIA OF CEDEX The Labratri de Getecnia (Getechnical Labratry) is a centre belnging t the Centr de Estudis y Experimentación de Obras Públicas, CEDEX, (Centre fr Studies and Experimentatin n Public Wrks) which is an autnmus rganisatin dependent upn the Ministry f Public Wrks (Ministeri de Fment). As part f CEDEX, the Labratri de Getecnia is a Centre that specialises in cnducting research wrk, experimenting and prviding technical assistance in matters cncerning fundatins, earth structures, sil and rck mechanics, envirnmental getechnics and, in general, all the civil engineering activities that are assciated with the grund. The specific aims f the centre can be summarised as fllws: Prviding technical assistance t the different Administratins in charge f Public Wrks and the Envirnment, as well as t ther Public r Private Bdies. Natinal and Internatinal Research, Technlgical Develpment and Innvatin prjects invlving getechnical matters. Internatinal Actin by means f E.U. wrking grups and technlgical netwrks. Knwledge transfer and training activities as well as Develpment Cperatin. These bjectives are develped in different perating areas: Basic and Experimental Getechnics n sils, rcks, waters and alternative materials. Auscultatin and Field tests. Applied Getechnics. The Labratri de Getecnia has develped an experimental installatin fr testing railway structures which includes a 21 m lng x 5 m wide x 4 m deep track bx and fur independent dynamic actuatrs that can reprduce the effect f bth simple axles and bgies n the rails, simulating their apprach t, passing and mving away frm the testing sectin cnsidered. The mst imprtant applicatins f this facility are: Study f shrt and lng term behaviur f cnventinal and high speed railway lines. Simulatin f real lads prduced by railway traffic in rder t study the fatigue f different elements f the track: rails, pads, sleepers, ballast, sub-ballast, frm layer and embankment.
