Price O.R. Systems Air Curtain Systems Product Overview The Price O.R. Air Curtain System has been specifically designed to meet the stringent ventilation requirements of today s operating rooms. Through the use of controlled air movement, this system provides a work area around the operating table that is as sterile as possible. Not only does the Price Air Curtain System work, it does so with a high degree of comfort and economy. The Price Air Curtain System integrates three basic components to minimize mixing of room and supply air in the operating table area: 1. Air Curtain Diffusers 2. Laminar Flow Diffusers 3. Low-Level Exhaust Grilles Laminar Flow Diffusers (LFD series) Price LFD Series laminar flow diffusers have been engineered to provide a uniform, unidirectional, vertical projection of supply air at a controlled low velocity. The downward piston motion of supply air, combined with low-level exhaust or return air inlets located at the perimeter of the room, is ideal for operating room applications. The laminar flow diffuser utilizes an internal pressure equalization baffle, resulting in a dual chamber design which introduces clean supply air to the space with minimal entrainment of old room air due to a low and controlled discharge velocity. The LFD is available with a number of different features and options, including construction material, welding method and damper access. Units are available in steel, aluminum, stainless steel, or hybrid construction (i.e. steel plenum with aluminum face). Laminar Flow Diffusers w/integral HEPA Filters (LFDC series) The LFDC Series of laminar flow diffusers come with an integral, high efficiency filter. The filter has a gel seal to provide an airtight seal around the filter, ensuring all supply air passes through the filter and provides clean, unidirectional, laminar air flow from the diffuser. The diffuser face is easily removed using quarter-turn fasteners, which allows room-side removal and replacement of the filter without moving or disconnecting the diffuser from the ceiling system. Price O.R. Systems Air Curtain Systems Component Features is factory sealed and tested to ensure any leaks are detected at the factory and corrected prior to shipment. Return Grilles The return grilles are located at a low level, preferably centered in each of the four walls. When it is not possible to have four returns, two low-level returns located on opposite sides of the room is the next best alternative. Since the grilles are located at a low level, stainless steel construction is preferred for its ruggedness and resistance to strong cleaning agents typically used in hospital operating rooms. Stainless Steel Return Grille w/ Removable Face (700H series) The Price 700H Series of grilles is available in two models: the 730H with ¾ blade spacing and the 735H with ½ blade spacing. The grilles are stainless steel in construction, giving excellent chemical resistance as well as strength to stand up to the day-to-day abuse in the operating rooms. Each grille is supplied with quarter-turn fasteners that allow for easy removal of the grille, and permit cleaning of the ductwork behind the grille as well as more thorough cleaning of the grille itself. Air Curtain Systems The HORD, in basic terms, is a 2 slot linear diffuser that is located at the perimeter of the operating table work area. The slot diffusers discharge a four-sided air curtain to enclose the work area. The higher velocity air pattern is projected approximately 15 from vertical away from the work area on all four sides. The two continuous slots create a thick, uniform curtain of air around the operating table work area. This air curtain does two things to aid the laminar flow diffusers in maintaining a clean work area: It presents a physical barrier in the form of a clean air curtain between the laminar flow diffusers (LFD) and the old air in the perimeter of the room at the ceiling level where the LFD is most likely to entrain room air. It entrains old room air and heavierthan-air gases to its outer boundary layer and carries them away from the operating table, toward the exhaust grilles, speeding dilution of contaminated room air. The Air Curtain System can be configured using a variety of Price manufactured components to suit individual engineering specifications or a specific application. Systems Components Air Curtain Systems - Diffusers Product Information HORD Series HORD series diffusers are fabricated using 14 gauge aluminum or 20 gauge stainless steel to suit project requirements. All corners (both vertical and horizontal) feature a 3/4 radius to facilitate effective cleaning while plenum end caps are continuously welded to optimize plenum integrity. The diffuser face is attached using springloaded quarter-turn fasteners for easy removal and access to internal surfaces for cleaning. Factory installed stainless steel dampers allow for simple adjustment and system balancing. Aluminum units feature a white bakedon powder coat finish (B12) formulated to resist scratches and flaking. All Price paint finishes used on critical environment products have been tested in accordance with ASTM procedures to ensure durability and resistance to common hospital cleaning solutions. Price O.R. Systems Components Air Curtain Systems - Diffusers Modular Plenum System The modular HORD system is supplied as four separate modules. Each module includes a plenum, face assembly and at least one inlet. In order to ensure equal velocity distribution over the face of the HORD section, there should be at least one inlet per 8 ft of HORD section. HORD sections larger than 8 ft should have a minimum of two inlets. HORD plenums are supplied in maximum one-piece section lengths of up to 8 ft. HORD plenums larger than 8 ft are supplied in multiple sections with a flanged connection provided for field assembly. This may be particularly true for retrofit applications where an existing hospital area is being converted into an operating room. For these situations Price offers the continuous plenum option in lieu of four independent modular plenums. Four sections of plenum are provided with corner sections, creating a continuous supply plenum. Corner sections allow supply air to freely pass from one plenum section to another, creating a self-balancing plenum system. The continuous plenum systems require only two, compared with at least one inlet on each side of the modular system (minimum four total). This critical area is, therefore, used to define the dimensional properties of the system. The nominal inside dimensions, or module length and width, of the air curtain system should be specified when selecting the HORD or HORDSS. Price O.R. Systems Components Air Curtain Systems - Diffusers Selection Guidelines Exhaust An operating room should maintain a positive pressure differential with adjacent spaces at all times. For this reason, the operating room exhaust air volume should be less than the total supply air volume. The required air flow offset (between supply and exhaust) to achieve a desired differential pressure relative to adjacent spaces is dependent on how well the room envelope is sealed. As such, it is not possible to calculate the offset value in advance of room commissioning and system balancing. However, a typical OR would have approximately 20% more air supplied to the room than is exhausted. The exhaust grilles should be located symmetrically on the walls near the floor level. The recommended unit for this application is a grille with 45 deflection blades, either 0.50 in. (13) or 0.75 in. (19) on center, constructed of stainless steel for strength and ease of cleaning. The unit should have quick-release fasteners for easy removal and cleaning. See pages E80 - E83 for a complete description of Price stainless steel return grilles (Model 700H) and their performance data. Selection at a core velocity of approximately 500 fpm will result in reasonable sound level and pressure drop. Systems Components Air Curtain Systems - Diffusers Ceiling System Details Detail A (Diffuser) Detail B (Panel) Ceiling Panel Detail C (Perimeter) Detail D (Perimeter) Drywall Perimeter Drywall Detail Ceiling panels, supplied by Price or others, are secured using hold-down clips to ensure an effective seal is maintained against the gasket (Detail A). LFD units or lighting designed for lay-in applications will typically create an effective seal without the need for holddown clips (Detail B). Special perimeter extrusions are available with Unitee CR to provide seal at the wall. Plaster perimeter ceiling is recommended for HDCR (Detail C and D). Ceiling Panels SC (Solid Core) panels provide a clean, flat surface with no exposed seams. Formed edges give the panels structural integrity. SC (Solid Core) SCE SCF (Solid Core Flush) panels provide a clean, flat surface that sits flush with the ceiling tee. SCE (Solid Core Extruded frame) panels feature an extruded frame for added structural integrity and and architectural look. PCE (Perforated Core Extruded frame) panels are similar to the SCE design but with a perforated look typically selected to match nearby laminar flow diffusers. Systems Components Air Curtain Systems - Diffusers Microbiological Testing In order to quantify the effectiveness of the Price Air Curtain System in delivering clean air to the operating room work site, we have conducted several field tests with actual installed systems. While test procedures exist for rating the cleanliness level of cleanrooms, they do not necessarily apply to operating rooms. The cleanroom test procedure measures the quantity of all particles of a specific size range. However, in an O.R. we are primarily concerned with colony forming units or bacterial counts due to the risk of post-operative infections, not simply particles. To address this issue, the American College of Surgeons Committee on Operating Room Environment published a definition of Surgical Microbiological Clean Air, which defined three classes of air cleanliness as follows: Class I Containing a maximum of one bacterial particle per cubic foot of air. Class V Containing a maximum of five bacterial particles per cubic foot of air. Class XX Containing a maximum of 20 bacterial particles per cubic foot of air. Price has had multiple Air Curtain System installations tested for microbiological air cleanliness per the College of Surgeons methodology. All tests were performed by independent agencies and in each case results confirmed that the Price systems provided an area around the operating table which met the American College of Surgeons requirement for a Class I environment. Price OR System Components LFD Series Product Overview Price LFD Series Laminar Flow Diffusers have been engineered to provide a uniform vertical projection of supply air at controlled low velocity. The downward projection or piston motion of supply air, combined with low-level exhaust or return air inlets is ideal for cleanroom or operating room applications. The laminar flow diffuser introduces clean supply air to the space with minimal entrainment of room air due to its low initial face velocity. Application Laminar flow diffusers located in the ceiling immediately above the work area can provide a controlled flow of conditioned supply air with minimal entrainment of residual room air. Coupled with low-level exhaust inlets, a controlled, low velocity mass movement of air can be maintained. The boundary layer of the air mass is the only place where any appreciable entrainment of residual room air may occur. With the boundary layer remote from the work area, the low velocity controlled air mass effectively isolates the work area from any effects or contaminants of the residual room air. Price OR System Components LFD3 Series Product Overview The PRICE LFD3 Laminar Flow Diffuser was designed with performance and safety in mind. This dual-chamber diffuser utilizes a carefully engineered dispersion basket along with an integrated V baffle to evenly distribute clean supply air across the face of the diffuser, regardless of diffuser size. The room-side adjustable cone damper promotes distribution of supply air within the upper plenum chamber while also offering maximum convenience for balancing contractors to adjust flow rates without removing the diffuser face. To ensure ASHRAE 170 requirements were satisfied for diffuser cleaning access, the LFD3 design facilitates quick and easy removal of all internal components without the need for tools. In addition, the design is completely free of any sheet-metal screws or other sharp fasteners that could lead to injury during the cleaning process. Using multiple independent plenums to satisfy length requirements of any one side shall not be permitted. Plenum inlets shall include room-side-removable stainless steel opposed blade dampers. Damper adjustment shall be possible without removal of the diffuser face.
