New Flyer of America Inc. The State of Charging Standards and Deployment David Warren Director of Sustainable Transportation

Agenda About New Flyer / Electric Bus Experience The State of Charging Standards Charging Infrastructure Project (Example) Charging Infrastructure Planning / Roles and Responsibilities Takeaways (Summary)

About New Flyer and MCI Electric Buses and Coaches New Flyer has manufactured and delivered over 6,400 transit buses powered by electric motors and batteries New Flyer is the only manufacturer of all three types of zero-emission buses (ZEBs) offering transit agencies options and flexibility for implementing ZEBs to meet unique requirements Battery Electric (XE35, XE40 and XE60) Fuel Cell Electric (XHE40 and XHE60 Trolley Electric (XT40 and XT60) New Flyer manufactures rapid charge and depot charge buses

About New Flyer and MCI Electric Buses and Coaches New Flyer battery electric buses In Service - Chicago Transit Authority, WMATA, Winnipeg Transit Major Programs In-Process - Major programs underway at Los Angeles, New York City, Salt Lake City, Portland, Boston, and Oakland Activity participating in many other active battery-electric bus RFPs and bid opportunities MCI was acquired by New Flyer Industries in 2015 MCI is currently developing an all-electric Coach

About New Flyer and MCI Electric Buses and Coaches New Flyer has no ambitions to design, manufacture or market proprietary charging equipment New Flyer firmly supports industry interoperable charging equipment and invested assets New Flyer will assist transit agencies with charging systems to ensure successful deployments (see contact information, last slide, to inquire) New Flyer expects future RFPs will separate charging equipment from bus procurement

Agenda About New Flyer / Electric Bus Experience The State of Charging Standards

Charging Standard - Objectives Utilize an established industry process which allows key stakeholders to cooperatively develop standards that support the deployment of batteryelectric buses (BEBs) with different types of charging system technologies Ensure New Flyer buses conform to the forthcoming charging equipment standards; capable of re-charging all types and makes of BEBs. In other words, buses and charging systems must be interoperable.

Interoperability Definition 1 Interoperability is the ability of a system to work with or use the parts or equipment of another system Definition 2 Interoperability is a characteristic of a product or system, whose interfaces are completely understood, to work with other products or systems, present or future, in either implementation or access, without any restrictions Simply Stated Charging a bus needs to work as effectively and safely as fueling any type of transit bus with an industry standard gas, diesel, or CNG nozzle

Four Standards Under Development (4) Charging Standards Under Development SAE J3105 (Overhead high power) SAE J2954-2 (Wireless high power) SAE J3068 (Plug-In AC) SAE J1772 (Plug-In DC) Key Stakeholders include and are not limited to: Transit Agencies, Bus OEMs, Charging Equipment Manufacturers, CTE, and CALSTART

Opportunity for FTA to Validate Interoperability of Charging Systems
