IT WAS HELPFUL FOR A-1 ENGINE REPAIR, A-6 ELECTRICAL, A-7 HEATING AND COOLING. THERE ARE QUESTIONS ON THE ACTUAL A-8 ENGINE PERFORMANCE ASE TEST THAT ASK EXTENSIVE QUESTIONS ABOUT FUEL TRIM VALUES AS IT RELATES TO O2 SENSORS AND SUCH THAT THE A-8 OF THIS BOOK DID NOT GO INTO. THE A-2 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS A WASTE OF TIME IN THIS BOOK. THERE WERE SO MANY THINGS THAT THE TEST HAD THAT WERE NOT COVERED IN THIS BOOK. KEEP IN MIND, THIS BOOK IS OLD RELATIVE TO A CONSTANTLY CHANGING TEST. IF YOU

WANT TO PASS WITH THIS BOOK, YOU BETTER ALREADY KNOW 60% OF THE TECHNICAL THINGS IN THE RELATED FIELD. IN ORDER TO PASS THE ASE TEST WITH EASE, I WOULD RECOMMEND (IF YOU ARE ADAMANT ABOUT PURCHASING THIS BOOK) THAT YOU STUDY FROM AT LEAST TWO DIFFERENT SOURCES. I FOUND MOTORAGE TO BE MUCH MORE INSIGHTFUL. I WAS ABLE TO GET A BETTER SCORE ON THE TESTS THAT I HAD PREVIOUSLY BARELY EEKED BY AFTER STUDYING, RELIGIOUSLY, THIS BIG GREEN BOOK OF "HALF THE JOB". COUPLED THAT WITH YOUTUBE VIDEOS TO SHOW YOU WHAT THE POOR ILLUSTRATIONS IN THIS BOOK ARE ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT, ALONG WITH VIDEOS ON THE PROCEDURES OF HOW TO PERFORM THEM. THIS BOOK IS JUST THAT...A "TEST PREP" NOT A "LESSONS IN AUTO MECHANICS" OR "HELP YOU PASS" BOOK. MOTORAGE, I FOUND, WAS TWO TIMES BETTER THAN THIS BOOK, WHICH, BTW, I STILL READ THIS BIG GREEN PAPER WEIGHT FROM TIME TO TIME, BUT I WILL NEVER TRUST THIS KNOWLEDGE ALONE (THOUGH IT IS ACCURATE, BUT DIRELY INADEQUATE) TO HAVE ME JUST BARELY PASSING AGAIN! ASE L-1 MASTER TECHNICIAN I have been in Fleet Maintenance for over 19 years. Having never attempted the ASE certifications this book was a great help. Allot of the questions were the same ( about 45% ). I took 6 ASE tests and past the 5 I took the time to read through this book. You do need a basic understanding for this book to be effective. I got this on my kindle to study for the ASE's. I studied and took two certifications and was able to pass them where as before when i took the tests i failed. This was a lot of help and a great value After spending about 3 weeks going over all parts of this book, I find it lacking in too many areas. There are just too many errors, too much misleading information, poorly worded questions and contradictory information. I reached a point where I feel I cannot trust this book to adequately prepare for any of the tests. One would think that by the third edition the book would have been profread enough the catch all the mistakes. This book is basically a test prep (tech A says, tech B says). If you don't have prior knowledge of either ASE testing or have automotive tech education, this book does very little in educating. You must understand the material to understand the book fully. The only cons I could find is that it is pricey for a book full of test questions and it doesn't cover the entirety of each ASE test section.

Helped me out with my recertification. Used it to pass 6 ASE's. Already had the other two. Book has a handful of typos and errors in the answer key throughout the entire book. Had to take away a star for that. Mostly though the book is correct. It was pretty good. It didn't feel super up - to -date but I took all of the tests and passed them all on the first try. I'm now a Master Tech. I had just taken 5 test past three, I checked with some of the info in this book after the test.
