Helm Master is a fully-integrated boat control system for outboard-powered boats in twin- or triple-engine is a fully-integrated controlyamaha systemboat for outboard-powered boats in for twinor triple-engine Helm Master configurations. Initially available toboat selected builders, it is programmed maximum performance configurations. Currently available to Yamaha boat builders, it is programmed for maximum performance on control specific on specific boat models. Helm Master not only makes docking easier, it also incorporates additional boat boat models. Helm Master not only makes easier, it also incorporates additional boat control functions, functions, such as automatic trim, speed anddocking even automatic steering friction control. such as automatic trim, speed and even automatic steering friction control. Ultimate Control Helm Master offers a revolutionary level of control, even in tight quarters. It allows movement of the boat with a joystick, not only fore and aft and to port and starboard, but the joystick can also be rotated for turning and positioning the boat. At the touch of a button, the system integrates all boat control devices while eliminating the need for bow thrusters in most boats. A user-selectable high mode allows the engine to operate at higher RPM for increased control. Helm Master makes maneuvering less stressful by allowing the operator to concentrate on docking, not using multiple boat operating devices. Ultimate Convenience The Helm Master system incorporates a new electronic key switch (EKS), which allows the system to be powered without the use of a conventional key. Yamaha s Y-COP theft deterrent feature is built-in. Even the feel of the steering is adjustable thanks to Helm Master. Steering friction and the number of turns lock to lock can be programmed to suit individual boat-builder preferences. Maximizing performance and fuel efficiency is easy with automatic trim control. When activated, the outboards will automatically trim up or down at a given RPM. Maintain throttle setting at the touch of a button. Speed Control can set RPM throughout the range of the engine. Helm Master is second-station compatible and can operate in twin and triple applications. *Helm Master is compatible with Yamaha 4.2-liter V6 Offshore and F350B outboards. How it Works There are two concepts the Helm Master user should come to understand. The first is the Central Axis Concept. That means Helm Master makes the operator the central pivot point around which the boat moves. The second concept is the Ring of Motion Concept. That means the more the operator moves the joystick, the greater the thrust and speed in that direction. How to Use it The forward portion of the joystick represents the bow. The operator should move and hold the joystick without returning to the center position (neutral) until arriving at the desired position. If the operator twists the joystick, the boat will rotate. For best results, the operator should not bump the joystick as they might with a conventional throttle. Engaging the Helm Master joystick disengages the steering wheel and transfers all steering and throttle control to the joystick. Operating the throttles disengages the joystick and returns operation to the remote control box and the steering wheel. 2
Components The new Helm Master system integrates multiple components. They include, but are not limited to, exclusive Helm Master Digital Steering Helm, Electronic Key Switch (EKS), digital remote control, control units, steering cylinders and pumps, joystick, and Command Link Plus 6Y9 gauge. Helm Master is a digital platform, and its components require little dash space. There are no cables, and the Digital Steering Helm does not require any hydraulic hoses at the helm. Helm Master components come with a Yamaha PowerMatched limited 3-year warranty. Digital Remote Control The Helm Master digital remote control is specifically designed to integrate with the Helm Master Digital Steering Helm and Helm Master Joystick. When any of the buttons are selected, a green LED is illuminated. The Speed Control selector is used to set RPM throughout the range of the engine. The Single Lever selector allows the port lever to control the shifting and speed of all engines. The Station selector allows control to be switched to a second station. The Center engine selector allows the port lever to control the center engine only. The trim assist selector allows the operator to synchronize the trim angle to a given RPM so that the engine will automatically trim to the desired angle. There are five setting positions that can be programmed using the Command Link Plus 6Y9 gauge. Finally, the Free throttle selector allows the selected engine to be throttled up with the shift function disengaged. The Helm Master remote control is the same whether used on twin or triple applications. The Speed Control selector works in conjunction with the forward-facing center-engine trim button (PTT Switch) on the Helm Master Control Box. 4 4
Joystick Control The Helm Master Joystick is the device that allows for side-to-side and rotational movement of the vessel. It integrates control of the throttle, shift and steering. The lever allows for movement fore and aft and to port and starboard or diagonally. It can also be rotated for turning and positioning the boat. The Helm Master joystick control is the same whether used on twin or triple applications. 0KAW_Joystick lever The Helm Master Joystick Control has two control selectors. The Joystick selector is used to activate the joystick. The remote control must be in the neutral position to allow the selector to be activated. Once the Joystick selector is illuminated, the outboards will shift and or turn, together or separately, based on the operator s input. The High mode selector allows for increased engine RPM. If at any time the operator uses the remote control or steering wheel, the joystick disengages. 5 5
Electronic Key Switch The Helm Master Electronic Key Switch (EKS) allows the main switch panel to be powered without the use of a conventional key. It uses a radio frequency key. To mobilize the starting system, the operator touches the key to the panel. Two audible beeps indicate that the system is unlocked. Pressing the Ignition button, then the Start/Stop button will start the engines. If the engines are running, pressing the Start/Stop button will stop the engines. The panel is still powered until the operator presses the Ignition button. The ignition button will power down automatically after one hour. (The operator can disable this function by changing the setting on the Command Link Plus 6Y9 gauge.) To engage the Y-COP immobilizer, the operator touches the key to the key panel. A single audible beep indicates the system is immobilized.
