FITTINGS, LOOPS, AND VALVE ACCESSORIES Fittings Rheodyne offers a variety of fittings. They differ in material of construction, tubing size, and pressure rating. Materials/Biocompatibility. 316 stainless steel, titanium, and polyetheretherketone polymer (PEEK) fittings are available. Both the nut and ferrule are made of the same material. Titanium is more resistant than stainless steel to corrosion by salts and acids. PEEK is completely resistant to salts, but it is degraded by strong acids and certain (rarely used) solvents. Polypropylene fittings are available for Teflon tubing; the tubing is flanged, so liquid does not contact the fitting itself. Tubing Size. There are Rheodyne fittings for 1/16-inch and 1/8-inch O.D. tubing. A 0.5-mm ferrule is also available (it uses the 1/16-inch nut), which provides connections for the 0.5-mm tubing used in small-volume sample loops for the Model 8125 low-dispersion injector. Polypropylene fittings are available for 1/16-inch and 1/8-inch tubing. Pressure Rating. Stainless steel and titanium fittings are rated for 7000 psi (483 bar, 48 MPa). PEEK fittings are rated for 5000 psi (345 bar, 34 MPa); they will hold onto stainless steel, titanium, and PEEK tubing operated at this pressure. However, in the case of PEEK tubing, the tubing itself may limit the operating pressure (see page 11). Rheodyne s RheFlex fittings are versatile. The nut and ferrule are made of PEEK, an exceptionally strong and inert polymer. The fitting holds with finger tightening on a variety of plastic and metal tubing. The nut and ferrule can both be reused many times. The illustration shows the slotted backside of the ferrule. It is squeezed down onto the tube by the mating conical surface in the nut. This unique gripping design improves reliability at high pressure. You can enhance reliability by using a wrench on the hex flats for additional tightening. The angles and surface contacts between the ferrule and nut are specially designed to prevent the nut from gripping the ferrule and twisting both the ferrule and the tube during tightening. This prevents the sample loop tubing from being twisted in opposite directions while being attached to an injector. Such twisting would stress the PEEK tubing, lowering the pressure rating. Sample Loops Loops are supplied with fittings that are unswaged. This allows the tube to be completely bottomed in the injector port before the ferrule is swaged on. The depth of the tubing holes may vary slightly from port to port and from valve to valve. A fitting made up in one port may leave a small dead space in another port. It is good practice to label loops so that they will be replaced in the same orientation and the same valve. RheFlex PEEK loops do not require this precaution, because the ferrule can slide and reposition itself along the tube when the fitting is reinserted into a port.

Stainless Steel and Titanium Sample Loops Metal loops are supplied with unswaged fittings so the tube can be completely bottomed in the injector port before the ferrule is swaged on. The size designations of the metal loops are nominal. The actual volumes can differ from the nominal designations because of the ±0.001-inch tolerance of the tubing bore. Accuracy of large loops (.040-inch bore) is about 5%, intermediate loops (.020-inch) 10%, and small loops, (.007-inch) 30%. Since both standards and unknowns are usually analyzed with the same sample loop, knowledge of the actual volume is rarely needed. If it must be known, it is best to calibrate the loop in place on the valve so that the flow passages in the valve are also taken into account. An alternative to calibration is to use a dual-mode injector and the partial-filling method of loading (see page 1). Model 8125 requires special loops in the 5-µL to 50-µL range. They are made with.020-inch O.D. tubing. For larger volume loops, use the ones listed for the Model 7125 Injector. Note: Loops for the Model 7725 injector are not interchangeable with loops for the Model 7125. The angle of the ports of the two models are different, requiring the loops to have a different shape. Burst Pressure of PEEK Unlike metals, plastics are viscoelastic and therefore the yield strengths are not well defined. Many factors affect the burst pressure of PEEK tubing. It will burst at a lower pressure when you: 1. Increase the inside diameter. 2. Increase the temperature. 3. Increase the time of exposure. 4. Increase the concentration of organic solvent. Table IV shows the pressure at which various 1/16 - and 1/8-inch O.D. tubes burst during a three-week test while exposed to different solvents at room temperature. At 500 psi below these pressures the tubing did not burst during the test. Warning! The tubing failed at the pressures listed in the table. Use a safety factor; operate routinely at much lower pressure. The size designations of PEEK loops are nominal. The actual volumes can differ from the nominal designations because of the ±0.002-inch tolerance of the tubing bore. Accuracy of large loops (.030-inch bore) is about 14%, intermediate loops (.020-inch) 21%, and small loops, (007-inch) 65%. Stainless Steel and Titanium Fittings RheFlex PEEK Fittings and PEEK Tubing Rheodyne metal tube fittings are available in 1/16- and 1/8-inch 316 stainless steel. The 1/16-inch is also available in titanium. The fittings have two parts: a nut and a ferrule. The 1/16-inch nut has standard #10-32 threads. The 1/8-inch nut has 5/16-24 threads. Three lengths of the 1/16-inch stainless steel nut are available. The extra long nut is recommended for fittings which are frequently disconnected, especially when space is restricted. The 1/16-inch titanium nut is available in two lengths. The nuts and ferrule are surface-treated to reduce friction and galling. The dull surface is distinguishable from the shiny surface of stainless steel fittings. 7010-009 1/16-inch Nut 7010-011 1/16-inch Long Nut RheFlex tube fittings provide inert, nonmetal connections for instrumentation. They can be used with all Rheodyne injectors, valves, and sample loops. The nut and ferrule are PEEK. The slotted backside of the ferrule is squeezed onto the tube by the nut s mating conical surface (see page 9). Due to this gripping design the 1/16-inch fitting will hold onto PEEK, stainless steel, and titanium tubing to 5000 psi (345 bar). The 1/8-inch fitting will hold to 3000 psi. You can reuse the ferrule and nut many times. Syringes and Mounting Brackets Replacement Parts for Injectors and Switching Valves These syringes have the needle shape required for use with Rheodyne injectors #22 gauge (.028-inch O.D.), 2 inches long, square cut tip (90 point style), no electrotaper. The 3725 family of injectors for preparative chromatography require a #16 gauge needle (.062 to.065-inch O.D.); other specifications are the same. Syringes 7252 and 7255 have a male luer tip, which can connect to a loop filler port, or to a 7215 needle (for loading), or to a 7125-054 Needle Port Cleaner (for flushing the needle port). It wears with use and is the only part that needs routine replacement. In the large prep valves, both the rotor seal and stator face assembly are PEEK so when one is damaged or worn the other should also be replaced. Vespel rotor seals have an operating ph range from 0 to 10. Tefzel rotor seals have a ph range from 0 to 14. We recommend Vespel, except when operating at high ph. PEEK rotor seals and stator face assemblies have a ph range from 0 to 14 (strong oxidizing acids such as nitric and sulfuric are not compatible with PEEK). Position Sensing Switches Models 7335 and 7315 Column Inlet Filters Tips on Maintenance and Service Position sensing switches can be attached to Rheodyne manual injectors and switching valves for marking the injection time on a recorder or for starting the program and data system of a chromatograph. The SPST magnetic reed switch closes in one valve position and stays closed until the valve is turned. It does not make a momentary switch closure. The Model 7161-020 is for injector models 7125 and 7125-081. The Model 7161-016 is for injector models 7010, 7010-087, and 7410; and for two-position switching valves, such as models 7000, 7030, and 7040. These switches are not appropriate for the following injectors which have a built-in position sensing switch or the capability of having a built-in switch: Models 3725, 3725-038, 7725, 9725 (also "i" versions of these valves) and 8125, 9125, 9010. 7161-020 Position Sensing Switch for 7125 7161-016 Position Sensing Switch for 7010, 7410, 7000, 7030, 7040 7165 Position Sensing Switch for 7520 Models 7335 and 7315 are particle filters for use between the injector and the column. Model 7335 contains a 3-mm diameter filter disc to provide high capacity and moderate dispersion; recommended for 4.6-mm diameter columns. Model 7315 contains a 1.5-mm diameter filter disc to provide moderate capacity and low dispersion; recommended for microbore columns. The filter discs, which contain 0.5-µm frits, are easily replaced. The bodies of the two models are identical and can be inter-converted simply by interchanging the filter disc. Pressure rating is 7000 psi (483 bar).
