When ordering power rewind models, prefix model number with: EP = Electric Rewind ( 1 /2 H.P.) A = Air Rewind HD = Hydraulic Rewind (Air rewind reels are supplied with control valve and hose; 12v and 24v DC rewind reels are supplied with switch and solenoid. 115 v AC rewind reels are not supplied with switch but can be ordered separately, hydraulic rewind reels are not supplied with control valve.) 4. For polished aluminum reels, prefix complete model number with SB ; for example: SBEPFF28-23-24. 5. Dimensions shown for reels up to and including 30-31 disc size reflect pressed frames. Series LD Reels and spools to handle up to 6" I.D. collapsible hose. Typical Installations: Single large-capacity reel installed in the hose bed area to handle long lengths of pre-coupled hose. Hose pays out from the top of the reel so gravity assists unwinding. Two reels installed in the hose bed. In this arrangement, the upper reel is unloaded only if necessary. Payout and rewinding of the upper reels are facilitated by the position of the lower reel. Two reels with larger-diameter discs and narrower drums can also be installed sideby-side in the rear of the hose bed to handle approximately the same amount of hose. This method allows a center walkway or paying out two lines simultaneously if required. Hannay Reels offer the most efficient method of handling large diameter collapsible hose. Payout is fast and direct. Rewinding is considerably faster than reloading a hose bed, and reeling the hose eliminates sharp bends in the hose. Drainage is also facilitated by reeling. Location of these large reels on the apparatus is unique to each fire department and its specific needs. A single large reel is favored by some departments, while others find a pair of somewhat smaller reels to be more efficient. The illustrations above show frequently used installations and they are intended only as a guide. Hannay Reels standard reels for large-diameter collapsible hose are of all-steel construction; however, they can be constructed of all-aluminum if required for finish and weight considerations. Reel and Spool Specifications Description: Spools include discs, drum, axle and sprocket for chain. (Chain and rewind motor not supplied.) Spool assemblies include all components except the frame which is fabricated by the apparatus builder. Reel assemblies include discs, drum, axle, pillow block bearings, rewind mechanism, motor and frame. Discs are either heavy gauge steel with rolled edges and concentric reinforcing ribs or 3/16" thick steel with 1/2" rod welded around circumference (also available in aluminum). Drums are formed by reinforced tie rods with radial supports. Frames are heavy duty square tubing. Rewind options: Chain and sprocket drive mechanism powered by electric or hydraulic rewind motors. Electric rewind system includes 12v or 24v DC motor with reversible leads, remote push-button operating switch, solenoid and connectors. A clutch reduction unit is standard and installed on the reel assembly to increase torque and permit slower operating speeds. The rewind motor can be installed inboard or outboard of the reel frame. A variety of hydraulic rewind systems can be configured with standard hydraulic components (see hydraulic circuit information on page 17). Reel and spool assemblies are equipped with a reversible type hydraulic motor with SAE O-ring fittings. Other hydraulic system components are supplied by truck or vehicle manufacturer. Consult factory for hydraulic motor requirements. Brakes: A caliper disc brake system is supplied, when specified, to control reel unwinding speed (when free-wheeling) and/or to lock the reel while the vehicle is traveling. The brake is hydraulically operated and is self-contained. Important: Hose capacity is based on the flat hose dimensions listed below, with couplings at 100 foot intervals. LD Reels and Spools Installation Guide Hydraulic Requirements It is IMPORTANT that the End user provide the O.E.M. with complete specifications as to the required operation of the large diameter reel being specified. Any speed and torque requirements MUST be known to properly specify the correct reel for the application. The schematics shown here are EXAMPLES ONLY! THE CORRECT PUMP AND HYDRAULICS ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE TRUCK MANUFACTURER, in conjunction with the PURCHASER. Notes: 1. The schematics shown are for reference only and may not necessarily reflect customer requirements. 2. Hannay Reels does not recommend specific brands for hydraulic system components. We suggest you work with your hydraulic component supplier to meet your specs. Series LD Reel with hydraulic motor rewind and optional caliper disc brake installed. Custom Reels The standard reel assembly and spool assembly models listed represent the most frequently specified customer requirements for handling large-diameter fire hose. Because of the many possible variations in reel installation and hose capacity requirements, we will also custom build reels and spools to your specifications to become an integral part of the apparatus. Reels can be built of either steel or aluminum construction and various finishes are available. 17
