AfigureheadineconomicnewsofthepastfouryearshasbeentheUSauto manufacturingindustry,itsdecline,bailoutandsubsequentrevitalization.new autosalesslumped,andautorepairsdidtoo,althoughsomereportswere misleading.initiallyitwasreportedthatautorepairsaleswereup;howeverthat doesn ttellthewholestory.whileitwastruethatmorepeoplewerefixingtheir oldercarsratherthanbuyingnewreplacements,manyofthosepeoplewerealso becomingmuchmorepricesensitivewiththeirregularmaintenanceandneeded repairs.thischangeinmindsetofpreviousandpotentialclientsreallyaffected theautorepairbusiness.thevalueofhavingarelationshipwithatrusted mechanicforthestandardpricewasoftenforegonewhentryingtomakeendsmeet. The 996 (1997) - Water-Cooled The996,whichrolledofftheassemblylinefrom1997to2005,representeda majorturningpointinthehistoryofthe911.itretainedallthecharacterofits classicheritage,butwasanentirelynewautomobile.thiscomprehensively redesignedgenerationwasthefirsttobedrivenbyawater-cooledboxerengine. Thankstoitsfour-valvecylinderheadsitachieved300hpandbrokenew groundintermsofreducedemissions,noise,andfuelconsumption.theexterior designwasareinterpretationofthe911'sclassicline,but withalowerdragcoefficient(cw)of0.30.thelinesofthe 996werealsoaresultofcomponentsharingwithPorsche s successfulboxstermodel.itsmostobviousexteriorfeature weretheheadlightswithintegratedturnsignals,atfirst controversialbutlatercopiedbymanyothermanufacturers.
