POWERING THE WAY Rental Power Planner

PLANNING FOR TEMPORARY POWER: A Critial Management Duty As a faility manager, you know better than anyone that eletrial power is the lifeblood of business. Without it, omputers don t ompute, pipes freeze, food spoils, and mahines don t run. An eletri utility power line has a profound effet on your bottom line. When you re without it, you need reliable temporary power. This Rental Power Planner an help you: Plan effetively to seure rental generators Save time and money during sheduled shutdowns At quikly during emergeny outages Develop a plan or refine the temporary power strategy you already have in plae A Cat Rental Power expert will help you hoose the power equipment you need.

Getting Started A Three-Step Approah Although ritial, planning for power doesn t need to be diffiult. Here are three simple steps that will help you seure and maintain the rental power neessary to arry your faility suessfully through a sheduled or emergeny shutdown: 1 Determine Your Faility s Eletrial Load Before you rent temporary power, you have to know how muh you need. Full Power If you have to keep your whole faility operating as it would with utility-supplied power, you need to determine your aggregate eletrial load. The quikest, easiest and most aurate way to do this is to take ammeter readings of your eletrial distribution boxes. Take the reading when your ompany is normally operating at peak load. You an also obtain peak demand readings from your utility bills. Aggregate loads are also listed on panels of eletrial distribution boxes themselves. A statement of your total eletrial apaity is also available at the loal utility. However, these soures will not give you true readings of the temporary power you need sine all buildings are wired for more eletriity than they will use. Priority Power At times, you may want to power only those eletrial loads that serve ritial funtions at your faility. If so, you need to prioritize individual loads. If you re not sure what your ritial loads are, start by determining the lost profit or other problems that result if your ompany is without the equipment. Other than life-safety eletrial loads powered by your standby generator sets as required by law, examples of ritial loads inlude: Lights Heating, ventilating and air onditioning (HVAC) Computers Proess Equipment Pumps Prioritizing will help you deide whih loads require power immediately during an emergeny. This is important sine it may take several hours or longer to seure all of the rental equipment you need on site during a large sale emergeny, suh as a natural disaster. In most buildings, a separate distribution box will feed ritial loads. In this ase, you may only need enough temporary power for the loads served by that set of iruit breakers. You an also deide to power speifi ritial loads served by separate iruit breakers within a distribution box. To do so, take an ammeter reading of the distribution box during the off-hours at your faility with the equipment you don t need shut off and the ritial loads on. The ammeter will tell you how muh power you need to serve the ritial loads sine that is all the distribution box is feeding. However, it s important that the non-ritial loads are shut off and kept off when rental power is hooked up. If you want to power individual piees of equipment that use motors, amperage and voltage information is listed on nameplates. You an list this information and all your power needs on the work sheet in this booklet. An additional note: Rental power is often used to bak up standby generator sets during sheduled and emergeny outages. To find out how muh temporary power you need for standby servie, ontat the ompany that supplied the standby generator, or a qualified rental generator set dealership. Planning for temporary power may require the need to prioritize ritial eletrial loads.

2 Your rental generator sets are only as reliable as the supplier who baks them. In planning for temporary power, find a rental dealership who has the equipment you need and a staff qualified to solve your problems and servie the mahines. Know Where to Rent Generator Sets and Related Equipment Visit the dealership to get to know the people you ll need to rely on during sheduled shutdowns and emergeny power outages. Here are basi questions to ask the dealerships: What is the kilowatt (kw) range of your generator set rental fleet? How do I know my rental units are 100 perent reliable? Can you deliver immediately? If not, how long will it take? What happens if a generator set I rent goes down? What if I need a generator set in the middle of the night, or during a holiday? Do you have ables and other equipment I may need? Who supplies fuel? How are your rental ontrats strutured? How flexible are they? Have you ever rented generator sets to ustomers in my industry? What equipment/manpower do I need to provide? Can you train my staff to hook up and operate the equipment? How long will it take? Can I obtain pre-approved redit so I an avoid delay during an emergeny outage? Can you supply an operator? What tehnial servie/support do you offer? 3 Answer the Basis, Save Time and Money Think about the following before the power goes off at your faility: How will the generator sets get from the dealership to the faility? Most dealerships deliver, but if you pik up the equipment yourself, you need to determine what size truk you will need. Most generator sets are towed on semitrailers and pull trailers. Others are skid-mounted and require lifting equipment for loading and unloading. Where will you put the generator sets? The largest generator sets, also referred to as power modules, measure 8 feet wide by 40 feet long. If tight quarters are onsideration, two or more smaller units will provide the same power at about the same prie. How will you get able from the generator sets outside your building to eletrial distribution boxes inside? Consider installing a weatherhead, or a able aess door in an outside wall of your faility that an be losed when not in use. Then, you won t need to route able through windows and doors that should remain shut during off-hours or inlement weather. Can you store enough fuel lose to the area where you plan to keep the generator sets? During extended generator set runs, an auxiliary tank of fuel will redue servie alls from your fuel supplier. Do you have people on staff who an hook up the generator sets and hek to ensure they will operate properly? If not, make sure your dealership or an eletrial ontrator an do the hookup, or have the dealership walk your staff through the proedures. Your Cat Rental Power dealer has people on staff to help you plan out your fuel apaity, abling needs, and on-site support.

KEY GENERATOR SET FEATURES TO SPECIFY: Your loal Cat Rental Power dealer has many kinds of generator sets and features to hoose from. Here are a few you should onsider: Sound-attenuation: You ll need quiet generator sets, alled sound-attenuated units, if your faility is lose to homes or other business. Auto start/stop onnetions: This is a ritial feature if you are using the rental generator sets to bak up permanent standby units. Auto start/stop will automatially start a rental generator if a standby unit goes down. Distribution panel labeling: This helps inexperiened operators safely identify output voltages. Radiator, exhaust disharge: Some generator sets feature vertial radiator and exhaust systems to diret heat and exhaust gases up and away from people and buildings. These features are important in populated or high traffi areas. Output bus bars: Bus bars should be spaed to allow for multiple output able hookup. This lets you run several piees of equipment off of one generator set. Fuel apaity: Chek the fuel apaity and onsumption rate to determine how many tanks of fuel will get you through your rental period. Generator sets should operate at least eight hours without refueling. Fuel priming pump: This ensures easier starts after transport. Eletroni governors: Speify these if you have ritial loads that annot tolerate flutuations in eletrial frequeny. Examples inlude omputers, motor-driven equipment and other mahines baked up by uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.

Charging alternator: This ensures batteries are harging when units are operating. Note: An outside power soure is required for standby generator sets if the unit is equipped with battery hargers and/or spae heaters and jaket water heaters. Seurity: Generator sets should be virtually tamperproof. Look for lokable doors, oil/ water drains mounted inside enlosure, and hidden exterior fuel drains. All onnetions, suh as output bus bars, should be overed. Sight gauges: Properly positioned sight gauges for fuel and other ritial fluids speed up spot-heking, letting your staff spend more time on other matters. NOTE: Ultimate Insulation Temperature. In no ase shall ondutors be assoiated together in suh a way with respet to the kind of iruit, the wiring method used, or the number of ondutors that the limiting temperature of the ondutors will be exeeded. NOTE: The ampaity tables shown in this brohure are for general referene only: Cable installation onditions vary and require full ompliane with the National Eletrial Code.
